Chapter 9: The Daughter They Thought Was Dead

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Not one word.

The baby monitor sat on the table like a weapon.

A harmless piece of plastic that had suddenly become a doorway for ghosts.

My mother's voice was gone.

But her final sentence remained.

"You were the child they lost."

I stared at the monitor.

Then slowly turned toward Daniel.

He looked away.

That was enough.

I didn't need another confession.

I already knew.

"You knew."

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I knew part of it."

My chest tightened.

"Part?"

I stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

He looked at me.

"It means I didn't know everything."

"Then tell me what you knew."

Daniel sat down.

He looked exhausted.

Like the truth itself had become too heavy to carry.

"Your mother wasn't supposed to raise you."

I felt my heart stop.

"What?"

Rachel looked between us.

"Explain."

Daniel looked at me.

"Before you were born, there was another child."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Listen."

"No, Daniel."

My voice cracked.

"You are telling me my entire life is a lie."

He didn't deny it.

And that hurt more.

"Your mother gave birth to twins."

The room became silent.

Twins.

A word I had never heard before.

A word that felt impossible.

"I don't have a twin."

Daniel looked at the hospital records.

"According to the official records, you don't."

The way he said it made my stomach turn.

"Official records?"

Rachel took the document from him.

She scanned the page.

Then froze.

"What?"

She looked at me.

"Your birth records were altered."

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn't handle another impossible thing.

"My birth records?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your family was connected to Dr. Vale's network before you were born."

I backed away.

"No."

"Your mother discovered what they were doing."

"Then why would she work with them?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because she was trying to protect one child."

I stared.

"What child?"

He didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

The answer arrived by itself.

Me.

The child they thought was dead.

I felt a strange emptiness.

My entire childhood.

Every birthday.

Every family photo.

Every memory.

Suddenly felt like a puzzle missing pieces.

"Where is my twin?"

Nobody answered.

That silence was worse.

I looked at Daniel.

"Where is she?"

His voice became soft.

"We don't know."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"You mean she could be alive?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Rachel stepped closer.

"That is why they are interested in you."

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"Because Dr. Vale isn't searching for a random bloodline."

She pointed at the records.

"He's searching for the missing child."

My heart pounded.

"The missing child?"

Rachel nodded.

"The one who survived."

I looked at Lily upstairs.

Then Max.

Then back at Daniel.

"So all of this..."

My voice trembled.

"The baby swap. Max. Lily."

Daniel nodded.

"It's connected."

"How?"

He took a deep breath.

"Because your twin had the same genetic marker they were looking for."

The room felt smaller.

"And Max inherited it?"

"Yes."

My son.

Again.

Everything came back to him.

"But why Lily?"

Daniel looked down.

"Because they made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"They thought Lily was connected to you."

I frowned.

"What?"

"They believed the baby you gave birth to would carry the same marker."

Rachel shook her head.

"But she doesn't."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

I looked toward the nursery.

My daughter.

The innocent child caught in someone else's war.

"They were looking for a child."

Daniel said quietly.

"But they found a family."

Suddenly...

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

My heart jumped.

The nursery.

We ran.

The door was open.

I knew I had closed it.

I knew it.

Inside, the room was empty.

The crib was there.

The blanket was there.

The stuffed rabbit was there.

But Lily was gone.

My scream filled the house.

"No!"

I rushed forward.

The window was open.

The curtains moved in the cold night air.

Someone had taken my daughter.

Max appeared behind me.

His face turned white.

"Mommy..."

I turned.

"What?"

He pointed toward the floor.

There was something lying beside the crib.

A small piece of paper.

I picked it up.

Three words.

Written by hand.

"THE FIRST DAUGHTER."

My blood ran cold.

Rachel grabbed the paper.

Then she noticed something else.

A small symbol in the corner.

Her face changed.

"What?"

She touched the symbol.

"This..."

"What is it?"

She looked terrified.

"It's the mark of Dr. Vale."

Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.

"We need to leave."

I looked at him.

"My daughter is gone."

"I know."

"Then find her."

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time...

I saw something I had never seen before.

Pure fear.

Not for himself.

Not for me.

For Lily.

"Listen to me."

His voice shook.

"They didn't take Lily because they wanted her."

"Then why?"

Daniel looked at Max.

Then at me.

"Because they want you to come find her."

The house went silent.

A trap.

This was a trap.

Someone had taken my baby.

Not to keep her.

But to bring me somewhere.

I looked at the note again.

"The first daughter."

A terrible thought entered my mind.

They weren't looking for Lily.

They weren't looking for Max.

They had been searching for me.

And now...

They finally found me.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

Calm.

Patient.

Almost kind.

"Hello."

I couldn't speak.

The man continued.

"Welcome home."

My blood froze.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"The person who knows where your daughter is."

My grip tightened.

"Where is she?"

The man laughed softly.

"Come alone."

"No."

"Then you will never see Lily again."

I felt tears burning my eyes.

"Who are you?"

The answer came quietly.

"Someone who has been waiting thirty years."

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

At Rachel.

At Max.

And I realized something terrifying.

The mystery of the stolen baby...

May you like

Was only the beginning.

Because the real secret started before I was born.
