Chapter 12: The Woman Who Was My Sister

"Hello, sister."
I couldn't breathe.
The voice on the phone was impossible.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it thousands of times.
During late-night conversations.
During family dinners.
During moments when I needed someone to listen.
The person I trusted when I was angry with Daniel.
The person who held my hand when I cried.
The person who came to the hospital the day Lily was born.
My best friend.
Emily.
My hand started shaking.
"No."
The word came out before I could stop it.
On the other end of the phone, silence.
Then a quiet sigh.
"I knew this day would come."
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
Daniel looked like he had been punched.
Rachel whispered:
"Who is it?"
I couldn't answer.
Because saying the name would make it real.
"Who is on the phone?"
Daniel asked.
I looked at him.
"My best friend."
The room became silent.
Then Emily spoke again.
"You finally know."
My heart shattered.
"Know what?"
"Everything."
I closed my eyes.
"You lied to me."
A pause.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt more than an excuse.
"Why?"
Her voice became softer.
"Because I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"That you would hate me."
I laughed bitterly.
"You were right."
The line went quiet.
Then Emily said:
"I never wanted to hurt you."
"Then why did you?"
A long pause.
Then:
"Because I spent my entire life watching you have the life that was taken from me."
The words cut deeper.
"What?"
I looked at my mother.
At Daniel.
At everyone.
Emily continued:
"I watched you grow up with a family."
"I watched you have birthdays."
"I watched you have a mother who loved you."
"I watched you build a life."
Her voice cracked.
"And I had nothing."
I felt tears forming.
"Emily..."
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"Don't call me that."
A chill went through me.
"Why?"
"Because that's not my name."
Silence.
Then:
"My name is Claire."
My mother's face changed.
Rachel whispered:
"Claire Carter."
The missing daughter.
My twin.
The child everyone thought was dead.
The sister who had been standing beside me for years.
I sat down slowly.
My legs couldn't hold me.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Claire laughed softly.
But there was no happiness in it.
"Would you have believed me?"
I didn't answer.
Because I knew.
A stranger claiming to be my missing sister?
It sounded impossible.
"You were my sister."
Her voice softened.
"But you were also the proof that I had been forgotten."
I felt my chest tighten.
"I never forgot you."
"But you never knew I existed."
That sentence hurt because it was true.
Claire continued:
"Do you know what it feels like to grow up knowing your own parents replaced you?"
My mother closed her eyes.
"Claire..."
"Don't."
Her voice trembled.
"Not now."
I looked at my mother.
"You knew?"
My mother nodded slowly.
"I knew she was alive."
My heart broke.
"And you never told me?"
"I was trying to protect you."
Again.
That phrase.
I hated it.
Everyone used it.
Everyone decided my life was something they had to control.
"Protect me from what?"
My mother looked at Claire's photograph.
"From losing you too."
The room went silent.
Claire spoke again.
"Dr. Vale found me first."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
She continued.
"When I was a child, I thought he saved me."
Her voice became distant.
"I thought he was the only person who cared."
Rachel looked horrified.
"He raised you?"
"No."
Claire paused.
"He studied me."
The room became cold.
"He made me believe my family abandoned me."
I looked at my mother.
"Is that true?"
My mother shook her head.
"No."
Her voice broke.
"Never."
Claire continued:
"When I discovered the truth, it was too late."
"What happened?"
"I couldn't just return."
"Why?"
"Because Dr. Vale had already built my entire identity around a lie."
I understood then.
Claire wasn't just stolen.
She was changed.
Manipulated.
A person shaped by someone else's plan.
"Then why become my friend?"
The question left my mouth.
The one question I needed answered.
The line went silent.
Finally, Claire said:
"Because I wanted to know what my life could have been."
I closed my eyes.
"That's not an answer."
"No."
Her voice broke.
"It's the truth."
A tear fell from my eye.
"You watched me."
"Yes."
"For years?"
"Yes."
"You knew my children?"
"Yes."
My voice became cold.
"And Lily?"
Silence.
Then:
"Lily is safe."
I froze.
"Where is she?"
"With me."
I stood up.
"What?"
My mother immediately grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
Claire continued:
"I didn't take her to hurt her."
"Then why?"
"Because Dr. Vale was going to."
My anger disappeared.
"What?"
Claire's voice became urgent.
"You don't understand."
"Explain."
"He doesn't want Lily."
A pause.
"He wants what Lily represents."
My heart raced.
"What does that mean?"
"She is proof."
"Proof of what?"
Claire whispered:
"That the experiment failed."
Nobody moved.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Claire."
She ignored him.
"Dr. Vale spent years trying to recreate the genetic pattern from our family."
"And?"
"He failed."
A pause.
"Until Lily."
I looked at my daughter.
"What about Max?"
Claire answered:
"Max was the key."
My son looked afraid.
"And Lily was the proof."
I felt sick.
"What proof?"
Claire's voice became quieter.
"That children are not just genetics."
"That love changes people."
The room became silent.
For the first time, I heard something different in Claire's voice.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Pain.
Then she said:
"Dr. Vale is coming."
Daniel looked toward the window.
"What?"
Claire continued:
"He knows you found me."
A pause.
"And he knows Lily is with me."
My heart stopped.
"Where are you?"
Claire didn't answer.
Instead, she said:
"Sister..."
"Yes?"
"If you want your daughter back..."
The line crackled.
"Bring Max."
My blood turned cold.
"Why?"
Claire whispered:
"Because Max is the only person who can stop this."
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Everyone looked at Max.
My five-year-old son.
The child at the center of a mystery he never asked for.
Then Daniel whispered the words nobody wanted to hear.
"They found him."
Outside the house...
May you like
A car engine started.
And someone was coming.
