Chapter 8: The Memory Daniel Tried to Erase

The message remained on my phone screen.

"Ask Daniel why he erased Max's first five years."

I read it again.

And again.

But the words didn't change.

They only became heavier.

Because there was one thing I knew about Daniel.

He could hide information.

He could lie by omission.

He could keep secrets.

But erasing five years of a child's life?

That sounded impossible.

It sounded insane.

Until I looked at Daniel's face.

And saw fear.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Fear.

"Daniel."

My voice was barely a whisper.

"What does that mean?"

He didn't answer.

"Daniel."

This time louder.

"What did you do?"

Max looked between us.

His small face was filled with confusion.

"Daddy?"

Daniel looked at him.

And that was when I saw the pain.

The kind of pain someone carries when they have been holding a terrible truth alone for too long.

"I never wanted him to forget."

The room became silent.

I felt my heart drop.

"Forget what?"

Daniel sat down slowly.

"Five years ago, Max saw something he shouldn't have seen."

My eyes moved to my son.

"What?"

Daniel looked at Rachel.

Then back at me.

"The night we discovered Dr. Vale's operation."

Rachel stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Daniel rubbed his face.

"Max was there."

Rachel frowned.

"He was a newborn."

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"He wasn't a newborn."

I froze.

"What are you saying?"

Daniel looked at Max.

"He was almost six months old."

The world stopped.

I stared at him.

"Six months?"

Daniel nodded.

"That's the part I never told you."

I felt dizzy.

"No."

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make sense."

Max was five.

He had always been five.

I had been there.

I remembered his first steps.

His first words.

His first birthday.

His first day of kindergarten.

Those memories belonged to me.

Didn't they?

Daniel continued quietly.

"After the incident, we had to disappear."

"What incident?"

"The night they came for him."

My breathing became shallow.

"What happened that night?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Max saw one of the people involved."

"Who?"

Daniel's silence lasted too long.

Then:

"Someone from your family."

My body went cold.

"My family?"

He nodded.

"No."

I stepped back.

"No, Daniel."

"You need to hear this."

"I don't want to."

"But you need to."

His voice cracked.

"Because the person who helped them get access to Max..."

He looked at me.

"Was your mother."

The words hit harder than anything before.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who cried when Max was born.

The woman who called every week asking about Lily.

"No."

I whispered.

"You're lying."

Daniel shook his head.

"I wish I was."

Rachel looked shocked.

"Then why would she do that?"

Daniel looked at the hospital records.

"Because she knew what Max was."

I felt anger rising.

"You expect me to believe my mother tried to give away my child?"

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

"I expect you to understand that she wasn't the person you thought she was."

My phone slipped from my hand.

I couldn't think.

I couldn't breathe.

Then Max spoke.

"Mommy."

I looked at him.

His eyes were wet.

"I remember Grandma."

My heart broke.

"What do you remember?"

He looked down.

"She told me not to tell you."

A chill went through me.

"What?"

Max hugged the rabbit.

"She said Mommy would be sad."

Daniel closed his eyes.

He knew.

"Max..."

I knelt beside my son.

"What did Grandma tell you?"

He looked scared.

"She said the baby in Mommy's tummy was special."

My heart raced.

"Special how?"

Max shook his head.

"I don't know."

He looked at Daniel.

"But Daddy got angry."

Daniel whispered:

"Because I knew what she was planning."

The room became silent.

I stood up.

"You knew my mother was involved?"

Daniel nodded.

"For years?"

He looked away.

"Yes."

My eyes filled with tears.

"You let me spend holidays with her."

"Because I didn't have proof."

"You let her hold Lily."

"Because I was watching."

I stared at him.

"You were watching my mother?"

Daniel looked broken.

"I was protecting you."

But suddenly...

I wasn't sure if I believed him.

Because everyone kept saying the same thing.

"I was protecting you."

My husband.

The nurse.

My mother.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a secret.

Everyone decided what I was allowed to know.

Then Rachel picked up the phone from the floor.

She looked at the message.

Her face changed.

"Wait."

"What?"

She zoomed in.

"There is something else."

I walked closer.

At the bottom of the message was a hidden attachment.

A video file.

Sent from the unknown number.

Daniel immediately stood up.

"No."

His reaction terrified me.

"What?"

"Don't open it."

"Why?"

"Because I know what it is."

Rachel looked at him.

"What is it?"

Daniel's face became pale.

"The video from that night."

The night Max disappeared.

The night they tried to take him.

I stared at the screen.

"Then we need to watch it."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

His voice broke.

"Because that video proves I failed him."

Nobody spoke.

The baby monitor suddenly crackled.

A sound came through.

A voice.

A woman's voice.

An old voice.

One I recognized immediately.

My mother's.

"Don't show her the video."

My blood froze.

I looked around.

The house was silent.

No one was there.

Rachel grabbed the monitor.

"How did she get connected?"

Daniel stared at it.

Then whispered:

"Because she's been listening the entire time."

The baby monitor crackled again.

My mother's voice returned.

"Daniel."

A pause.

"You should have left when I warned you."

Daniel's face changed.

"Mom?"

The voice continued.

But it wasn't speaking to Daniel.

It was speaking to me.

"Sweetheart..."

I stopped breathing.

"There's something your husband never told you."

My hands trembled.

"What?"

The voice became softer.

Almost sad.

"Max wasn't the only child they were looking for."

A pause.

Then:

"You were the child they lost."

The monitor went silent.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly...

The mystery was no longer about my son.

May you like

It was about me.

And the secret hidden before I was even born.
