Chapter 13: The Boy Who Could End the Experiment

The sound of the car engine grew louder.
Closer.
Everyone in the room froze.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel walked toward the window.
He looked outside.
And his face changed.
"They're here."
My heart dropped.
"Who?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Because I already knew.
Dr. Vale.
The man who had spent years hiding behind hospital walls.
The man who had turned children into pieces of a puzzle.
The man who had taken my sister.
The man who had almost taken my son.
He was here.
Max grabbed my hand.
"Mommy."
I looked down.
His face was pale.
"Is he going to take me?"
The question broke me.
I knelt in front of him.
"No."
I held his shoulders.
"No one is taking you."
"But they always try."
His voice was small.
"They always try to take someone."
I felt tears forming.
Because he was right.
My son had spent his entire life surrounded by secrets he never understood.
I pulled him into my arms.
"You are not a thing."
I whispered.
"You are not an experiment."
"You are my son."
Max hugged me tightly.
And for the first time that night...
I saw something change in his eyes.
Not fear.
Determination.
Daniel watched us.
Then quietly said:
"That's why they want him."
I looked up.
"What?"
Daniel looked at Max.
"They spent years trying to understand why he is different."
Rachel frowned.
"Different how?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Not in the way they think."
He looked at me.
"Dr. Vale believes everything comes from genetics."
"And?"
"And Max proved him wrong."
I didn't understand.
"How?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Because Max was born with the same genetic markers they were searching for."
A pause.
"But he didn't become what they expected."
Rachel looked confused.
"What did they expect?"
Daniel looked toward the door.
"Someone easy to control."
Silence.
Max frowned.
"I'm not easy to control."
A tiny spark of anger appeared in his voice.
And somehow...
That made me smile.
Even now.
Even here.
He was still Max.
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly."
A loud knock interrupted us.
Everyone froze.
Three slow knocks.
Not rushed.
Not aggressive.
Confident.
Dr. Vale knew we were inside.
And he knew we had nowhere to run.
My mother stepped forward.
"Don't open it."
Daniel nodded.
"We don't have to."
Then Dr. Vale's voice came from the other side.
"Daniel."
My blood ran cold.
His voice was calm.
Almost polite.
"You always were terrible at hiding."
Nobody answered.
He continued.
"I know you're there."
A pause.
"I know Rachel is there."
Another pause.
"And I know the boy is there."
Max moved closer to me.
Dr. Vale continued:
"You have no idea how important he is."
Daniel shouted:
"He is a child."
"No."
Dr. Vale's voice remained calm.
"He is a discovery."
My hands clenched.
I hated him.
Not because he was a monster from a story.
Because he sounded normal.
Because people like him were always the most frightening.
People who could destroy lives while believing they were doing something necessary.
The door handle moved.
Daniel immediately pushed a chair against it.
"Back door."
Rachel whispered.
Everyone moved.
Except me.
I looked upstairs.
"Lily."
I couldn't leave without her.
My mother grabbed my hand.
"Claire has her."
I looked at her.
"You trust her?"
My mother hesitated.
Then:
"I trust that she loves you."
That was the strangest thing anyone had said all night.
Because after everything...
I believed it.
Maybe broken people still loved.
Maybe hurt people still cared.
Maybe Claire wasn't just the sister I lost.
Maybe she was the sister who had spent years trying to come home.
A crash came from downstairs.
The front door had opened.
Dr. Vale was inside.
We ran toward the back exit.
Then Max stopped.
Everyone turned.
"What?"
He looked upstairs.
"I hear her."
My heart jumped.
"Lily?"
Max nodded.
"She's crying."
Daniel looked confused.
"How?"
Max touched his ear.
"I don't know."
He closed his eyes.
"I just know."
I remembered something.
The hospital.
The nursery.
The way Max knew something was wrong before anyone else.
He had noticed the bracelet.
The baby.
The nurse.
Things adults ignored.
Because children saw things differently.
"Max."
I held his hand.
"Can you find her?"
He nodded.
"I think so."
Daniel looked worried.
"This is exactly what Vale wants."
I looked at him.
"No."
I tightened my grip on Max's hand.
"This time, we choose."
We moved upstairs.
Slowly.
Quietly.
The hallway was dark.
At the end was my old bedroom.
The room where I slept as a child.
The room where my mother measured my height.
The room where my entire life began.
The door was slightly open.
Inside...
Someone was waiting.
Claire.
She stood beside the window.
Holding Lily.
My heart nearly broke from relief.
"Lily."
I rushed forward.
Claire handed her over immediately.
For a second, we just looked at each other.
Two sisters.
Two lives stolen by the same person.
"I never wanted this."
Claire whispered.
I believed her.
"Why did you ask for Max?"
Her expression changed.
"Because he is the only one who can expose him."
"How?"
Claire looked at Max.
"Because Dr. Vale made one mistake."
"What mistake?"
She looked at my son.
"He thought the experiment was about genetics."
A pause.
"But it was always about memory."
The room became silent.
"What?"
Claire stepped closer.
"Dr. Vale erased memories from children connected to his research."
My blood froze.
"Max..."
She nodded.
"Max remembers things he was never supposed to remember."
Daniel looked shocked.
"That's impossible."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Max.
"That's why he was different."
Max stared at her.
"I remember the hospital."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Max looked scared.
"I remember the night they came."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What do you remember?"
Max looked at him.
Then said:
"Daddy wasn't alone."
Silence.
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean?"
Max looked at Daniel.
"There was another person helping you."
Daniel went pale.
"No."
Max nodded.
"Yes."
He looked at me.
"Mommy..."
His voice trembled.
"I remember who it was."
A sound came from the hallway.
Slow applause.
Everyone turned.
Dr. Vale stood at the door.
Smiling.
"Finally."
His eyes moved to Max.
"The memory has returned."
Nobody moved.
Dr. Vale smiled.
"Do you know how long I've waited for this moment?"
Daniel stepped forward.
"You won't touch him."
Dr. Vale ignored him.
He looked at Max.
"You are the first child who remembered."
Max stared at him.
"Why?"
Dr. Vale smiled.
"Because you were never supposed to survive."
The room went silent.
Then he said:
"And now that you remember..."
May you like
A pause.
"We can finally finish what we started."
