Chapter 10: The House Where My Childhood Ended

"Come alone."
Those two words repeated inside my head.
Again.
And again.
Come alone.
The kind of words villains say in movies.
The kind of words that always lead to a trap.
But this wasn't a movie.
This was my daughter.
My baby.
My little girl who had only been home for one night before someone took her away.
I looked at Daniel.
"We need to go."
He immediately shook his head.
"No."
My anger exploded.
"No?"
I stepped toward him.
"My daughter is missing."
"I know."
"Then why are you standing here?"
His face tightened.
"Because that's exactly what they want."
I stared at him.
"They took Lily because they knew I would come."
"Yes."
"Then I have to go."
"No."
His voice became firm.
"They are not trying to get Lily."
I froze.
"What?"
"They are trying to get you."
The words felt like ice.
I looked at Max.
My son was standing silently near Rachel.
He was holding the rabbit.
Again.
Always the rabbit.
The one small piece of normal life left in this nightmare.
Daniel walked closer.
"If you walk into that place alone, they win."
I wiped my tears.
"What choice do I have?"
He didn't answer.
Because he knew.
A mother would always choose her child.
Even if the road ahead was covered in broken glass.
Rachel stepped forward.
"Where did they tell you to go?"
I looked at her.
"They didn't."
I checked my phone.
There was only one message after the call.
An address.
A place I had never seen before.
But Daniel had.
The moment he looked at the screen...
His face changed.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
"Daniel."
His voice was barely audible.
"No."
"What is it?"
He looked at me.
"That address."
A pause.
"It's your childhood home."
My heart stopped.
"My childhood home?"
Daniel nodded.
"The house your mother sold fifteen years ago."
I stared at the address.
A place I barely remembered.
A place filled with old photographs.
Old toys.
Old memories.
A place my mother never wanted to talk about.
"Why would they take Lily there?"
Nobody answered.
But deep down...
I knew.
Because the answer was connected to me.
Two hours later, we arrived outside the old house.
The neighborhood looked exactly the same.
The same trees.
The same narrow street.
The same cracked sidewalk where I learned to ride a bicycle.
But something felt wrong.
Like the house was waiting.
Like it knew I had returned.
Daniel parked several houses away.
"We don't go in without a plan."
I looked at him.
"You said that when Max was taken."
His expression changed.
Because we both remembered.
He had failed once.
He wasn't going to fail again.
Rachel checked the windows.
"No movement."
Max sat in the car with the doors locked.
I hated leaving him.
But I couldn't bring him into danger.
Before leaving, he grabbed my hand.
"Mommy."
I looked at him.
"If you see the lady from the hospital..."
I froze.
"What lady?"
"The one with the necklace."
Rachel looked at him.
"What about her?"
Max lowered his voice.
"She's not the bad one."
Everyone became silent.
"What?"
Max looked confused.
"I think she's scared too."
Daniel stared at him.
"Max..."
"What?"
"How do you know?"
Max shrugged.
"Because she looked like Mommy."
My heart tightened.
Like me?
Before I could ask more, Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Then Daniel's face became pale.
"Where?"
A pause.
"I understand."
He ended the call.
"Who was it?"
He looked at the house.
"Dr. Vale."
Rachel immediately reached for the door handle.
"What did he say?"
Daniel stopped her.
"He said he isn't the one who took Lily."
I frowned.
"Then who did?"
Daniel looked at me.
"The person who has been protecting you."
I didn't understand.
"Who?"
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Your mother."
The world went silent.
Again.
"No."
Daniel nodded.
"She was waiting here."
"Why?"
"Because she knows the truth."
Rachel looked at the house.
"Then let's ask her."
We moved carefully.
The front door was unlocked.
That scared me more than a locked door.
Someone wanted us inside.
I entered first.
The smell hit me immediately.
Dust.
Old wood.
Memories.
The hallway looked exactly like my childhood.
The same wallpaper.
The same stairs.
The same small marks on the wall where my mother measured my height every birthday.
I walked slowly.
A thousand memories returned.
My mother holding my hand.
My father laughing.
A happy childhood.
Or what I thought was one.
Then I saw something.
A photograph on the wall.
A family photo.
My parents.
Me.
And another baby.
I froze.
I had never seen this picture before.
I stepped closer.
There I was.
A little girl.
About three years old.
Holding a baby.
A baby with my eyes.
My twin.
My hands trembled.
"Daniel..."
He came closer.
His face changed.
Because he recognized something.
On the back of the frame was a note.
I turned it over.
Three sentences.
Written in my mother's handwriting.
"She is alive."
"She was never taken."
"She has been closer than you think."
I felt my heartbeat stop.
"What does that mean?"
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone looked up.
A woman's voice called out.
"Because your sister has been living beside you for years."
I couldn't breathe.
My mother stepped into view.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
And in her arms...
Was Lily.
My daughter.
Safe.
Sleeping.
I almost collapsed from relief.
Then my mother said the words that destroyed everything.
"I didn't steal your baby."
She looked at me.
"I saved her."
I stared.
"What?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because the people who wanted Lily..."
She looked at Daniel.
"Were never looking for you."
A pause.
"They were looking for the child you were supposed to have."
Daniel's face went pale.
"What did you do?"
My mother looked at him.
"I switched them."
Silence.
The truth landed like thunder.
My mother had changed something.
A secret involving my birth.
My children.
And the baby I thought I had lost.
Then she whispered:
"The baby you brought home..."
She looked at me.
"Was never the one they were searching for."
I looked at Lily in her arms.
My daughter.
The child I had been searching for.
Then my mother said:
May you like
"Because your real daughter died five years ago."
Everything stopped.
