Chapter 6: The Secret Daniel Buried Five Years Ago

For the first time since we brought Lily home...

I was afraid of my husband.

Not because I thought he would hurt me.

Not because I believed he didn't love us.

But because I no longer knew which parts of Daniel were real.

The man I married.

The father who held Max when he cried.

The husband who stayed beside me through every doctor's appointment.

The man who whispered that our family was finally complete.

Was he the same person who knew about a baby swap?

Was he the same person who met Rachel three years ago?

Was he the same person who had been hiding the truth from me?

I looked at the empty street outside.

Dr. Vale was gone.

But his warning remained.

"Your husband has been hiding for five years."

Five years.

The exact age of Max.

A terrible thought appeared.

What happened five years ago?

What did Daniel bury?

"Mommy."

Max's voice pulled me back.

I looked down.

He was holding the stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit he had forgotten at the hospital.

The same rabbit that had led him to the truth.

"Are we going to find Daddy?"

I didn't know how to answer.

A child should never have to ask that question.

A five-year-old should worry about cartoons.

Toys.

School.

Not whether his father was involved in something terrifying.

"I don't know, sweetheart."

Max looked down.

"Is Daddy bad?"

The question broke something inside me.

Because I didn't have an answer.

"I don't know."

I hated saying it.

But lying to him felt worse.

Rachel walked toward the table.

"We need to leave."

I looked at her.

"Leave?"

"Now."

She pointed toward the documents.

"Those records are dangerous."

"Why?"

"Because if Dr. Vale has been hiding this for years, he won't stop now."

I looked at Lily.

"I'm not leaving my daughter."

Rachel softened.

"I'm not asking you to."

She picked up the hospital records.

"I'm saying we need somewhere safe."

Before I could answer...

The front door opened.

All three of us froze.

My heart jumped.

Then a familiar voice filled the room.

"Don't move."

Daniel.

I turned.

He stood in the doorway.

His clothes were wrinkled.

His face looked exhausted.

Like he hadn't slept in days.

Like he had been running from something.

Or someone.

Max immediately ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

Daniel dropped to his knees.

He hugged our son tightly.

For one moment...

Everything looked normal again.

A father.

A son.

A family.

Then Max whispered:

"Why did you lie to Mommy?"

Daniel froze.

Slowly, he looked at me.

And I saw it.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Guilt.

"You found the records."

It wasn't a question.

I stepped back.

"You knew."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes."

My heart shattered.

"How long?"

"Since before Lily was born."

The room went silent.

"Before she was born?"

Rachel stared at him.

"You knew about the hospital."

Daniel looked at her.

"I knew something was wrong."

Rachel's voice became angry.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel looked away.

Because that was the answer.

He had no excuse.

I walked closer.

"Start talking."

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at Max.

"I need you to understand something."

"No."

My voice was cold.

"I need you to understand something."

He stopped.

"You kept a secret about my child."

My eyes filled with tears.

"You let me bring home a baby without telling me there was a possibility she wasn't mine."

Daniel looked destroyed.

"I was trying to protect you."

"From what?"

"From the truth."

I laughed bitterly.

"The truth is already here."

He looked toward the window.

"Dr. Vale is not just a doctor."

Rachel crossed her arms.

"Then what is he?"

Daniel hesitated.

And when he answered...

Everyone went silent.

"He runs a private adoption network."

My stomach tightened.

"Adoption?"

Daniel nodded.

"Not legal adoption."

Rachel's face changed.

"You mean..."

"Children taken without their parents knowing."

The room became freezing cold.

I looked at Lily.

My baby.

My daughter.

A child who had unknowingly become part of someone's nightmare.

"How did you know?"

I asked.

Daniel sat down slowly.

"Five years ago, I worked for the hospital."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"I wasn't a doctor."

He shook his head.

"I was in administration."

Rachel looked shocked.

"You worked there?"

Daniel nodded.

"And I found records that didn't make sense."

"What kind of records?"

"Babies who were declared dead but had no death certificates."

"Families who were told their children didn't survive."

"Medical files that disappeared."

Every word felt heavier.

"So you investigated."

Daniel nodded.

"At first, I thought it was a mistake."

He looked at Rachel.

"Then I met her."

Rachel's eyes narrowed.

"You used me."

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I was trying to find Charlotte."

Rachel's expression softened slightly.

"But you disappeared."

"I had to."

"Why?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because they found out."

A silence.

"Who?"

Daniel whispered:

"Everyone involved."

I felt a chill.

"Everyone?"

He nodded.

"The nurses. The administrators. People with money. People with power."

Rachel looked at the documents.

"And Lily?"

Daniel looked at our daughter.

His eyes filled with tears.

"She was never supposed to come home with you."

My heart broke.

"What?"

Daniel's voice cracked.

"That night at the hospital, there was a mistake."

I stared at him.

"What mistake?"

He looked at Max.

Then at Lily.

"The baby they planned to take..."

Was not Lily.

The room went silent.

"It was another child."

Rachel stepped forward.

"Whose child?"

Daniel looked terrified.

Then whispered:

"Mine."

Nobody moved.

I couldn't understand.

"Your child?"

Daniel nodded.

"The baby they wanted was our baby."

I stared at him.

"But why?"

Daniel looked toward the door.

Because even now...

He was afraid someone was listening.

Then he said:

"Because Lily wasn't the target."

A pause.

"They were looking for a baby with a specific bloodline."

My face went pale.

"What bloodline?"

Daniel looked at me.

And his answer changed everything.

"The same bloodline Max has."

I looked at my son.

Max looked confused.

Then scared.

Because suddenly...

The baby mystery was no longer about Lily.

May you like

It was about my five-year-old son.

And why someone had been watching our family long before our daughter was born.
