Chapter 14: The Memory Hidden Inside Max

Nobody moved.

Not even Dr. Vale.

He simply stood there, watching Max.

Not like a doctor looking at a child.

Like a person looking at the final piece of a puzzle.

And that made me sick.

I stepped in front of my son.

"You are not getting near him."

Dr. Vale smiled.

"You still don't understand."

I held Lily tighter.

"Understand what?"

He looked at Max.

"The boy has spent five years carrying a memory that should not exist."

Daniel's expression changed.

"What did you do to him?"

Dr. Vale tilted his head.

"What I had to do."

My anger burned.

"You erased his memories."

"No."

His answer was calm.

"I removed trauma."

Rachel laughed bitterly.

"That is what you call it?"

Dr. Vale ignored her.

"Children are fragile. Memories of fear can destroy them."

I stared at him.

"You kidnapped children."

"No."

His voice became colder.

"I saved them from lives they were never prepared for."

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the most terrifying thing about him.

He truly believed himself.

People like Dr. Vale never saw themselves as villains.

They built cages and called them protection.

They took families apart and called it progress.

Then Max stepped forward.

I immediately grabbed his shoulder.

"No."

But he looked at me.

His eyes were different.

Not scared.

Not confused.

He looked like a child who had finally found the missing pages of his own story.

"I remember."

Everyone froze.

Daniel whispered:

"Max..."

My son looked at Dr. Vale.

"I remember the room."

Dr. Vale's smile disappeared slightly.

"The hospital room?"

Max nodded.

"The hidden room."

A flicker of concern appeared on Dr. Vale's face.

For the first time...

He looked nervous.

"What do you remember?"

Max looked down.

"I remember Mommy crying."

My heart broke.

"Max..."

"I remember Daddy holding me."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"And I remember..."

Max stopped.

His face changed.

Fear returned.

"What?"

I knelt beside him.

"You can tell me."

He looked at me.

"I remember someone screaming."

The room became silent.

"Who?"

Max looked at Dr. Vale.

"No."

He looked at Daniel.

"No."

Then he looked at my mother.

Everyone froze.

"Grandma."

My mother covered her mouth.

"No..."

Max continued:

"Grandma was there."

My body went cold.

Again.

Daniel looked at my mother.

"Tell me he is wrong."

My mother couldn't answer.

That silence was enough.

"Mom?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I didn't want you to know this way."

My heart shattered.

"What did you do?"

She looked at Max.

"I saved him."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You helped them."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I pretended to help them."

Everyone stopped.

"What?"

My mother looked at me.

"I knew Dr. Vale wanted Max."

She swallowed.

"So I made him believe I was helping."

Rachel frowned.

"Why?"

"Because I needed time."

"For what?"

Her eyes moved to Max.

"To get him out."

I felt confused.

"But Max was still taken."

She nodded.

"I failed."

The words came out broken.

"I got him away from the hospital, but Dr. Vale found us."

Daniel looked shocked.

"Then what happened?"

My mother looked at Max.

"Daniel arrived."

I turned.

Daniel.

He looked away.

"You were there."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"Tell me."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"I followed your mother because I knew she was involved."

"And?"

"I found Max."

He looked at his son.

"He was unconscious."

My heart hurt.

"What did you do?"

"I took him."

"And then?"

Daniel looked at Dr. Vale.

"I made a deal."

Everyone froze.

"What deal?"

Dr. Vale smiled.

"Tell her."

Daniel's face became pale.

"I agreed to let him believe the experiment failed."

I stared.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at Max.

"It means I allowed him to remove Max's memories."

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

"You let them erase your son's memories?"

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"I thought I was saving him."

My voice broke.

"You thought?"

"I didn't know if he would survive otherwise."

Max looked at Daniel.

"So you forgot me too?"

Daniel froze.

"What?"

"You forgot what happened."

Nobody spoke.

Max continued:

"You forgot that I was scared."

Daniel fell to his knees.

"No."

"You forgot I needed you."

The words destroyed him.

Because they were true.

Daniel had protected Max's body.

But he had lost part of his son's heart.

Then Dr. Vale interrupted.

"Enough."

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped forward.

"Emotional reunions are meaningless."

His eyes focused on Max.

"The important thing is that the memory returned."

Rachel moved closer.

"Why do you need his memory?"

Dr. Vale smiled.

"Because he knows where the original files are."

My heart stopped.

"What files?"

Dr. Vale looked at Max.

"The files your family has been hiding for thirty years."

I looked at my mother.

She looked terrified.

"Original files?"

Dr. Vale continued:

"The records proving the first experiment."

My voice shook.

"What experiment?"

Dr. Vale smiled.

"The one that created you."

Nobody moved.

I felt cold.

"Me?"

He nodded.

"Your mother thought she saved you."

A pause.

"But she didn't understand."

He looked at Max.

"You are not important because of your blood."

Then he looked at me.

"You are important because you were the first success."

The room fell silent.

My entire life.

My childhood.

My memories.

Everything suddenly felt like a question mark.

"What am I?"

Dr. Vale answered:

"The beginning."

Then he reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small device.

Daniel immediately recognized it.

"No."

"What?"

Daniel stepped back.

"That device..."

His voice shook.

"That's what they used on Max."

Dr. Vale smiled.

"Not anymore."

He pressed a button.

The lights flickered.

Max suddenly grabbed his head.

I screamed.

"Max!"

He fell to his knees.

And then he whispered something.

Something that made everyone freeze.

"I remember where the files are."

Dr. Vale smiled.

"Good."

Max looked up.

Tears in his eyes.

"But you don't know something."

Dr. Vale frowned.

"What?"

Max whispered:

"The files aren't hidden."

A pause.

"They're inside someone."

Nobody understood.

Until Max looked directly at me.

"Mommy."

May you like

My heart stopped.

"Your memories are the files."
