Chapter 9: Seventy-Two Hours

The note lay on the marble floor.
No signature.
No fingerprints.
Just eight chilling words:
YOU HAVE 72 HOURS BEFORE THE BOY DISAPPEARS AGAIN.
No one spoke.
Detective Sarah Bennett carefully slid the paper into an evidence sleeve.
"Bag it. Full forensic workup."
Officer Martinez nodded.
"Already on it."
Michael never took his eyes off Ethan.
His son sat between him and Lily, clutching his father's hand so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
"Dad..."
Ethan whispered.
"Am I going to disappear?"
Michael immediately knelt in front of him.
"No."
"But the letter..."
"The letter is from people who want to scare us."
"Will they come back?"
Michael looked directly into his son's eyes.
"They'll have to get through me first."
Special Agent Daniel Cross stepped away from the group and made a secure phone call.
His voice remained low.
"Priority Alpha."
"...Yes."
"...The leak is confirmed."
"...No, the child is alive."
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression darkened.
"What do you mean the safe house is compromised?"
Silence.
Finally, he ended the call.
Sarah noticed immediately.
"Bad news?"
Cross nodded.
"Very."
"What happened?"
"There are only twelve government safe houses in this region."
"And?"
"Three addresses were just leaked online through an encrypted network."
Sarah frowned.
"So we use another."
Cross shook his head.
"Whoever is behind this already knows our emergency relocation protocols."
Michael folded his arms.
"Then my children aren't going anywhere with strangers."
Cross didn't argue.
"I expected you'd say that."
Meanwhile, the forensic team continued examining the recovered laptop.
One technician called out.
"I found deleted emails."
Sarah walked over.
"Can you restore them?"
"I'm trying."
Lines of corrupted data scrolled across the screen.
One by one, fragments returned.
Most were unreadable.
Then...
A complete message appeared.
From: phoenix@...
To: vk...
Subject: Phase Two
The email read:
Carter has become suspicious.
Emotional pressure has failed.
Proceed with extraction timetable.
Do not damage Subject E.
The father is expendable.
Michael read the final sentence twice.
The father is expendable.
Cross quietly closed the laptop.
"They've decided."
Michael looked up.
"Decided what?"
"They no longer need you alive."
An uncomfortable silence settled over the room.
Richard Donovan broke it.
"There's something I don't understand."
Everyone looked at him.
"If this organization wanted Ethan..."
"...why wait eight years?"
Cross answered.
"Maybe they couldn't find him."
Sarah disagreed.
"They clearly knew where he lived."
Cross nodded.
"Then perhaps they couldn't risk exposure."
Michael added quietly,
"Or maybe..."
Everyone turned.
"...they were waiting for something."
No one had an answer.
Just after midnight...
The mansion had become a fortress.
Police cruisers blocked both entrances.
Floodlights illuminated the gardens.
Officers patrolled every corner of the property.
Inside...
Lily had finally fallen asleep on the couch.
Ethan refused.
Every time he closed his eyes...
He saw the masked man raising the pistol.
Michael sat beside him.
"You should try to rest."
"I can't."
"Why?"
Ethan hesitated.
Then whispered,
"I remember something."
Michael leaned closer.
"What do you remember?"
"The man..."
"The shooter?"
Ethan nodded.
"I've seen him before."
Michael felt his pulse quicken.
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Think."
Ethan squeezed his eyes shut.
"It was..."
"A dream?"
"No."
"A picture?"
"No."
Then suddenly...
His eyes opened.
"The zoo."
Michael frowned.
"The zoo?"
Ethan nodded rapidly.
"He was there."
"When?"
"Last summer."
"What was he doing?"
"He was watching us."
Michael froze.
"Are you sure?"
"I thought he was another dad."
"You never told me."
"He smiled."
The boy's voice trembled.
"I smiled back."
Michael immediately found the family photo albums stored in the study.
He searched until he found pictures from the previous summer.
Central City Zoo.
Birthday trip.
Dozens of photographs.
Lily feeding giraffes.
Ethan holding cotton candy.
Vanessa smiling beside them.
Then...
One image caught his attention.
Taken near the penguin exhibit.
The family stood together.
In the background...
A man wearing a blue baseball cap looked directly toward the camera.
His face was partially turned.
Michael's blood ran cold.
He enlarged the image on his phone.
The shape of the jaw.
The posture.
The height.
Even beneath the cap...
He recognized him.
The masked intruder.
Watching them.
A full year before the attack.
Sarah examined the photo.
"This changes everything."
Richard nodded.
"He wasn't hired yesterday."
"No."
Sarah looked at Michael.
"Your family was under surveillance for at least twelve months."
Cross quietly corrected her.
"Probably longer."
Suddenly...
The mansion's lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then stabilized.
Every officer looked up.
Sarah immediately reached for her radio.
"Check the generator."
An officer answered.
"On it."
Thirty seconds later...
"Generator is fine."
Sarah frowned.
"Then what caused the power fluctuation?"
No one knew.
Until every television in the house turned on by itself.
One after another.
Living room.
Kitchen.
Study.
Hallway.
Bedroom.
Every screen displayed the same image.
Black background.
Silver phoenix emblem.
Then...
A distorted voice filled the mansion.
"Good evening, Michael Carter."
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
"You have spent today chasing ghosts."
"You have uncovered fragments."
"But fragments can be dangerous."
Michael stepped toward the television.
"Who are you?"
The voice ignored the question.
"For eight years, you have loved the boy as your own."
"For that..."
A brief pause.
"...you have our respect."
Sarah signaled the technicians to trace the signal.
They shook their heads.
"No source."
"It's hijacking every device."
The voice resumed.
"You now have two choices."
The screen changed.
A countdown timer appeared.
71:12:43
The seventy-two-hour deadline had already begun.
"Choice one."
"Continue searching."
"Everyone you love dies."
The screen changed again.
A photograph appeared.
Michael's heart stopped.
It showed Lily asleep on the couch...
Taken only moments ago.
Inside the mansion.
Someone had photographed her...
From within the house.
The voice spoke one final sentence before every screen went black.
May you like
"You locked the doors..."
"...but you forgot to ask who was already inside."
