Chapter 11: The Hidden Level

The gunshot echoed through the foundation like rolling thunder.
Every conversation stopped.
Detective Sarah Bennett raised her weapon instantly.
"Where did that come from?"
Officer Martinez listened carefully.
"Below us."
Michael frowned.
"That's impossible."
Cross looked toward the basement floor.
"No."
His expression had hardened.
"It's not."
Michael stared at him.
"What aren't you telling us?"
Cross hesitated only a moment.
"Large estates built during the 1950s sometimes included Cold War emergency shelters."
Michael shook his head.
"This house was renovated before I bought it."
"Renovated doesn't mean fully documented."
Sarah pointed toward the hidden surveillance room.
"If someone built that room without appearing on the blueprints..."
She looked down at the concrete floor.
"...they could have built more."
Within minutes, officers searched the basement again.
Every wall.
Every corner.
Every inch.
Nothing.
Until Ethan quietly spoke.
"Dad?"
Michael turned.
"Yes?"
"I hear water."
Everyone fell silent.
No one else had noticed.
Michael listened carefully.
At first...
Nothing.
Then...
A faint sound.
Dripping.
Steady.
Almost hidden beneath the hum of the generators.
Cross slowly walked toward an old metal shelving unit.
The dripping grew louder.
He knocked against the concrete wall behind it.
Solid.
Then one step to the left.
Hollow.
Sarah immediately called for tools.
Three officers pushed the shelving aside.
Hidden behind it...
Was a rusted steel hatch built into the floor.
No handle.
No visible lock.
Just decades of dust.
Michael stared.
"I've lived here nine years..."
"...and never knew this existed."
Cross quietly replied,
"Someone wanted it that way."
Bolt cutters snapped the corroded locking bar.
The hatch groaned open.
A wave of stale air rushed upward.
Cold.
Damp.
Forgotten.
A narrow steel staircase disappeared into darkness.
Sarah looked at her team.
"I'll lead."
Cross shook his head.
"I go first."
Michael stepped beside them.
"So do I."
Sarah looked directly at him.
"You're injured."
"My wife is missing."
"My children were almost murdered."
"I'm coming."
Sarah knew arguing would waste time.
She nodded.
"Stay behind me."
Flashlights pierced the darkness.
The staircase descended farther than anyone expected.
Ten feet.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Finally...
The group reached another corridor.
Concrete walls.
Exposed pipes.
Emergency lights that hadn't worked in years.
The place smelled of rust and mold.
Yet...
Someone had been there recently.
Fresh footprints crossed the dusty floor.
Sarah crouched.
"Three people."
Cross studied them.
"No."
He pointed farther ahead.
"Four."
Michael noticed something else.
One set of footprints was much smaller.
A woman's shoe.
Vanessa.
The corridor ended at a reinforced steel door.
It stood slightly open.
A thin beam of light escaped through the gap.
Sarah motioned everyone into position.
Three.
Two.
One.
She pushed the door open.
The room beyond looked nothing like the abandoned tunnel.
Bright lights.
Modern equipment.
Fresh paint.
Someone had spent a fortune building it.
Computer servers lined one wall.
Surveillance monitors filled another.
Every monitor displayed live camera feeds from around the mansion.
Dozens of angles.
Front gate.
Kitchen.
Hallways.
Children's bedrooms.
Even the basement they had just searched.
Michael's stomach turned.
Whoever operated this room had watched his family every day.
Then Michael noticed something lying on the floor.
A pair of handcuffs.
Broken.
The same model police had placed on Vanessa.
There was blood beside them.
Only a small amount.
Sarah knelt.
"Fresh."
Cross looked around.
"They were here less than five minutes ago."
Officer Martinez pointed toward the far wall.
"Door."
A hidden exit stood partially open.
Someone had fled.
Michael was about to follow when Sarah suddenly raised a hand.
"Stop."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
She pointed her flashlight toward the floor.
Fishing line.
Almost invisible.
Stretched across the doorway.
Cross slowly exhaled.
"Tripwire."
The bomb technician carefully examined it.
"It isn't an explosive."
"What is it?"
He followed the line upward.
Connected to...
A camera.
The moment someone crossed the doorway...
The camera would activate.
Michael frowned.
"Why?"
Cross answered quietly.
"Because they wanted to know whether we found this place."
Sarah stepped over the wire carefully.
The team followed.
Beyond the hidden door...
Another corridor.
This one shorter.
At its end...
A small office.
The office was empty.
Except for one chair.
Someone sat in it.
Head lowered.
Motionless.
Michael's heart pounded.
"Vanessa?"
No response.
Sarah approached cautiously.
She reached the chair.
Slowly turned it around.
Everyone stopped.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It was a man.
Late fifties.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Dead.
A single gunshot wound to the chest.
His eyes remained open.
Cross's expression changed instantly.
"I know him."
Sarah looked over.
"Who is he?"
Cross swallowed.
"Harold Mercer."
"Who's that?"
"He handled financial logistics for several classified government contractors."
Michael looked confused.
"What was he doing here?"
Cross didn't answer.
Instead, he noticed a folded document tucked beneath the dead man's hand.
He carefully removed it.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Millions of dollars.
The final entry caught his attention.
V. Carter
Amount:
$5,000,000
Status:
Pending upon successful transfer of Subject E
Michael felt a chill crawl down his spine.
Vanessa hadn't just been manipulated.
She had been promised five million dollars.
Sarah looked toward Cross.
"So she really was involved."
Cross nodded slowly.
"At least at some point."
Michael clenched his fists.
"But why run?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew whether Vanessa had escaped...
Or had been taken.
Just then, Officer Martinez's radio crackled violently.
"Detective!"
Sarah grabbed it.
"What happened?"
"We've got movement upstairs!"
"What kind of movement?"
"The children..."
Michael's blood ran cold.
"What about my children?"
The officer's breathing was ragged.
"They're gone."
Silence.
Michael couldn't process the words.
"What?"
"The officers guarding them are unconscious."
"Lily and Ethan..."
The officer paused.

Then spoke the sentence every parent fears.
"...have been kidnapped."
