Chapter 6: The Order That Shouldn't Exist

The foyer fell into stunned silence.

Rain still drummed against the shattered window, but inside the mansion no one moved.

Detective Sarah Bennett looked down at the document again, reading each line more carefully.

Then a third time.

Her instincts screamed that something was wrong.

Michael stepped toward her.

"Let me see it."

She handed him the order.

Across the top, beneath an official-looking government seal, were the words:

EMERGENCY FEDERAL PROTECTIVE CUSTODY ORDER

Beneath that:

Subject: Ethan James Carter

Michael scanned the pages.

His pulse quickened.

The document carried a federal case number.

A judge's electronic signature.

Several agency references.

Everything looked authentic.

Until he reached the final page.

His eyes narrowed.

"This signature..."

Sarah looked over his shoulder.

"What about it?"

Michael pointed.

"I know Judge Harrison."

"You do?"

"He sits on the board of one of my charitable foundations."

Sarah frowned.

"And?"

"He retired six months ago."

The room froze.

Richard Donovan took the document and examined it himself.

Thirty seconds later, he looked up.

"He's right."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"Then this order is forged."

The leader of the suited men smiled for the first time.

"Detective..."

His voice remained perfectly calm.

"...perhaps you should verify that before making accusations."

Sarah stared directly at him.

"I intend to."

The stranger nodded politely.

"We'll wait."

He didn't look nervous.

That bothered her more than anything.

Michael turned toward Ethan.

His son sat quietly on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket.

He looked exhausted.

Confused.

Scared.

Like a child who had aged years in a single afternoon.

Michael knelt beside him.

"Buddy."

Ethan looked up.

"Yes, Dad?"

"No matter what happens..."

He squeezed the boy's shoulder gently.

"...don't leave my side."

Ethan nodded immediately.

"I won't."

Lily crawled closer and wrapped both arms around her brother.

"We stay together."

Michael smiled weakly.

"Always."

Meanwhile...

Sarah stepped into the dining room and dialed a secure number.

"Dispatch."

"This is Detective Bennett."

"I need immediate verification on a federal custody order."

She read the case number aloud.

Silence.

Typing echoed through the receiver.

One minute passed.

Then another.

Finally...

"I'm not finding that case."

Sarah frowned.

"Check again."

More typing.

The operator returned.

"Nothing."

Sarah's stomach tightened.

"No agency records."

"No filing."

"No federal action."

She thanked dispatch and ended the call.

When she returned to the foyer, the six suited men hadn't moved an inch.

Almost as if they already knew what her answer would be.

Sarah folded the document.

"This order doesn't exist."

The leader smiled again.

"I was afraid you'd say that."

Without another word, he reached into his jacket.

Every police officer instinctively reached for their weapons.

The man slowly removed...

A second credential wallet.

This one thicker.

More official.

He opened it.

Gold badge.

Government seal.

Sarah examined it carefully.

Her eyes narrowed.

It appeared genuine.

"I'm Special Agent Daniel Cross."

He spoke calmly.

"National Security Division."

Michael frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

"You weren't supposed to."

Sarah kept studying the badge.

"If this is legitimate..."

"It is."

"...then why bring a forged custody order?"

Cross answered without hesitation.

"Because whoever created it wanted us to arrive before local law enforcement discovered the child."

Michael's head snapped toward him.

"What did you just say?"

Cross looked directly at Ethan.

"Your son isn't simply in danger."

"He is the reason all of this is happening."

The room exploded with questions.

"What are you talking about?"

"Who are you people?"

"What danger?"

Cross raised one hand.

"Enough."

His voice cut through the chaos.

He turned toward Michael.

"Mr. Carter."

"Have you ever wondered why your wife specifically targeted Ethan instead of both children equally?"

Michael opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

He had wondered.

Vanessa certainly hurt Lily.

But Ethan...

Ethan always seemed to receive the worst punishments.

Cross continued.

"Have you ever questioned why today's attacker ignored your wife?"

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

"And why he fired at Ethan before firing at you?"

Silence.

Cross nodded slowly.

"Because Ethan is the target."

Michael stepped forward.

"Why?"

Cross hesitated.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared on his face.

"I don't have clearance to answer that."

Michael laughed bitterly.

"You burst into my home with armed agents..."

"...claim my son is being hunted..."

"...and now you can't tell me why?"

"I'm telling you what I can."

"No."

Michael's voice rose.

"You're telling me almost nothing."

Before Cross could respond...

Officer Martinez hurried in from outside.

"Detective!"

Sarah turned.

"What is it?"

"We found the shooter's vehicle."

"Where?"

"Half a mile away."

"Anything inside?"

Martinez nodded.

"A laptop."

Cross immediately looked interested.

"Bring it."

Twenty minutes later...

The forensic team powered on the recovered computer.

No password.

Almost empty.

Just one encrypted folder.

Its name:

PHOENIX

Michael felt his stomach twist.

The same name Lily had mentioned.

The same name recovered from Vanessa's deleted messages.

The technician bypassed the encryption.

The folder opened.

Inside were dozens of files.

Photographs.

Maps.

Financial records.

Then...

A document labeled:

SUBJECT E

Sarah clicked it.

The first page appeared.

Everyone leaned closer.

At the top of the file:

Target Name: Ethan James Carter

Age: 8

Blood Type: O Negative

Height.

Weight.

Medical history.

School schedule.

Favorite foods.

Sleep habits.

Everything.

Someone knew more about Ethan than his own pediatrician.

Michael's hands began shaking.

"Who made this?"

The technician scrolled lower.

Then stopped.

The author field appeared automatically.

Created by:

Dr. Adrian Keller

Cross's expression changed instantly.

He whispered a name that seemed to drain the color from his own face.

"No..."

Sarah looked at him.

"You know him?"

Cross nodded slowly.

"I thought he was dead."

Michael frowned.

"Who is he?"

Cross remained silent.

Finally...

He answered.

"Dr. Adrian Keller was one of the world's leading genetic researchers."

Richard frowned.

"Was?"

Cross looked at Ethan again.

"He disappeared nine years ago after a classified government investigation."

Michael's pulse accelerated.

"What investigation?"

Cross met his eyes.

"The investigation into illegal human genetic experimentation."

The room fell deathly silent.

Michael looked at Ethan.

Then back at Cross.

"What does that have to do with my son?"

Cross didn't answer.

Instead...

He opened the final page of the file.

A large red stamp stretched diagonally across the document.

PROJECT PHOENIX

Below it...

One sentence.

Just seven words.

Prototype survived. Retrieval is highest priority.

Michael felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Prototype?

He slowly turned toward Ethan.

His little boy sat hugging Lily, completely unaware of the words glowing on the screen.

May you like

Michael whispered...

"...What have they done to my son?"
