Chapter 5: The Call That Was Never Meant to Be Found

Vanessa didn't answer.

Not immediately.

For the first time since Michael had burst through the front door earlier that afternoon, the confidence in her eyes vanished.

Detective Sarah Bennett noticed.

Experienced investigators learned to watch the silence as carefully as the words.

People lied with their mouths.

Fear showed itself before either.

Sarah held up the evidence bag containing the attacker's phone.

"Mrs. Carter."

Her tone remained calm.

"I'll ask you again."

"Why did this man call your phone twenty-three minutes before he entered your home and shot your husband?"

Vanessa blinked once.

Then twice.

Finally, she laughed.

It sounded forced.

"That's impossible."

Sarah tilted her head.

"Is it?"

"My phone receives hundreds of calls."

"Then this should be easy to explain."

"I don't answer unknown numbers."

Michael spoke quietly.

"Check her call log."

Vanessa's head snapped toward him.

"You don't have the right."

Sarah did.

She extended one hand.

"Your phone, please."

Vanessa hesitated.

"I left it upstairs."

An officer immediately stepped forward.

"I'll retrieve it."

"No!"

The word escaped too quickly.

Too loudly.

Everyone in the room turned toward her.

Vanessa realized her mistake almost instantly.

She forced a smile.

"I just... don't like strangers going through my bedroom."

Sarah didn't smile back.

"We have a search warrant in progress because this is now an attempted homicide."

The detective nodded toward another officer.

"Escort Mrs. Carter upstairs."

Michael sat on the edge of the sofa while a paramedic wrapped a fresh bandage around his wounded shoulder.

The bullet had passed through cleanly.

Painful.

But not life-threatening.

He barely noticed.

His attention remained fixed on the staircase.

Richard Donovan sat opposite him.

"You were lucky."

Michael looked at him.

"That wasn't luck."

"What do you mean?"

"He had a clean shot."

Richard frowned.

Michael continued.

"He could've killed me with the first bullet."

"But he didn't."

Richard thought for a moment.

"You think he missed intentionally?"

Michael slowly nodded.

"He wasn't trying to kill me first."

Richard's expression darkened.

"He was aiming for Ethan."

Michael looked toward the hallway where his children sat wrapped in blankets with a police counselor.

"They weren't after money."

"They weren't after me."

"They came for my son."

Neither man said another word.

The realization was almost too disturbing to discuss.

Upstairs...

Officer Martinez entered the master bedroom.

Vanessa stood beside him, arms folded.

"My phone is on the nightstand."

Martinez picked it up.

"I'll need the passcode."

"I don't remember."

He raised an eyebrow.

"You don't remember your own passcode?"

"I changed it recently."

Sarah stepped into the room.

"Mrs. Carter."

Her patience was beginning to disappear.

"Refusing to unlock your phone won't stop us."

"It only changes how long this takes."

Vanessa looked away.

"I want a lawyer."

Sarah nodded once.

"That's your right."

Then she added quietly,

"But while we're waiting..."

She looked around the room.

"...we'll continue searching."

Another detective opened the walk-in closet.

A third photographed every drawer.

Martinez checked the nightstands.

Nothing unusual.

Until he noticed something beneath the bed.

A small black lockbox.

"Detective."

Sarah walked over.

"Bring it out."

The box was about the size of a shoebox.

Heavy.

Locked with a keypad.

Sarah looked at Vanessa.

"Code?"

No response.

Martinez produced a compact pry tool from his kit.

Thirty seconds later...

The lock snapped.

He lifted the lid.

Everyone leaned closer.

Inside...

Were dozens of neatly organized folders.

Each labeled with dates.

Michael Carter.

January.

February.

March.

April.

May.

June.

July.

Sarah opened the first folder.

Printed photographs.

Bank statements.

GPS records.

Business schedules.

Copies of Michael's passport.

Insurance documents.

Medical records.

Every movement.

Every appointment.

Every trip.

Every signature.

Richard, who had just entered the room, stared in disbelief.

"My God..."

Sarah opened another folder.

Hidden camera photographs.

Michael entering his office.

Leaving restaurants.

Meeting investors.

Playing with his children at the park.

Even pictures taken through the windows of his own home.

Someone had been watching him.

For months.

Maybe years.

Then Martinez found another envelope.

No label.

He opened it carefully.

His expression changed instantly.

"Detective..."

Sarah took the contents.

Her eyes widened.

Inside were life insurance documents.

Michael's life insurance policy.

Coverage:

$50,000,000

Beneficiary:

Vanessa Carter

Richard slowly exhaled.

"This keeps getting worse."

Sarah flipped another page.

There was handwriting in the margin.

Not Michael's.

Not typed.

Written in blue ink.

Three simple words.

Accident preferred.

The room fell silent.

Sarah looked at Vanessa.

"Would you like to explain this?"

Vanessa's lips parted.

No words came out.

Downstairs...

Michael quietly sat beside Lily.

She leaned against him.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Are the police angry?"

"No."

"Will they take us away?"

He immediately shook his head.

"Never."

She looked relieved.

Then she whispered,

"I remembered something."

Michael looked at her.

"What is it?"

"The bad man..."

"Yes?"

"I've seen him before."

Michael's heartbeat quickened.

"Where?"

She frowned, trying to remember.

"He came here."

"When?"

"I don't know."

"Was I home?"

She shook her head.

"You were at work."

Michael leaned closer.

"What happened?"

"He wore a blue hat."

"And?"

"He went into Mommy's office."

"Did they talk?"

Lily nodded.

"They argued."

Michael frowned.

"About what?"

"I don't know."

Then her face suddenly brightened.

"But I remember one word."

"What word?"

She whispered it.

"Phoenix."

Michael repeated it softly.

"Phoenix?"

She nodded.

"They kept saying..."

Her tiny voice became almost inaudible.

"...'Phoenix Project.'"

At that exact moment...

Upstairs...

A young forensic officer hurried into the bedroom carrying a laptop.

"Detective Bennett."

"What is it?"

"We recovered deleted messages from Mrs. Carter's cloud backup."

Sarah looked up.

"Anything useful?"

The officer swallowed.

"Very."

He turned the screen around.

The recovered conversation appeared.

Unknown Contact:

PHOENIX

Vanessa:

Is everything ready?

Phoenix:

The boy must be alive.

Vanessa:

What about Michael?

Phoenix:

If necessary... eliminate him.

Sarah's eyes slowly lifted from the screen.

Every officer in the room turned toward Vanessa.

Before anyone could speak...

A loud voice echoed from downstairs.

"DETECTIVE!"

Everyone rushed toward the staircase.

Officer Jenkins stood in the foyer, pale as a ghost.

"What happened?"

He pointed toward the front entrance.

Outside...

Two black SUVs had just stopped at the gates.

Six men in identical dark suits stepped out.

None wore police uniforms.

None showed badges.

The man leading them held up a leather credential wallet.

"Federal authority."

He spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"We're taking custody of Ethan Carter."

Detective Bennett frowned.

"Under what authority?"

The stranger handed her a sealed document.

Sarah read the first page.

Then looked up, visibly stunned.

Michael saw the color drain from her face.

"What is it?"

She hesitated.

Then answered.

"This order..."

She looked back at Ethan.

"...was signed three days ago."

Michael's blood ran cold.

Three days ago?

Before today's attack.

Before the custody filing.

Before anyone knew anything.

May you like

Someone...

Had already planned to take his son.
