Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Door

Michael replayed the last thirty seconds three times.

Each time, the words struck harder.

"I just need them until the inheritance is transferred."

The room fell into a suffocating silence.

Lily stood frozen beside the bed, clutching the faded stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Ethan's eyes remained fixed on the tiny recorder, as though the device itself had become a monster.

Michael slowly locked the recording.

His fingers trembled, but his mind had never been clearer.

Vanessa wasn't simply abusive.

She had a plan.

And somewhere in that plan, his children were nothing more than bargaining chips.

"Daddy..."

Lily whispered.

"Are we in trouble?"

Michael immediately knelt and cupped both children's faces.

"No."

His voice was firm.

"You are not in trouble."

"Did we make Mommy angry again?"

The question shattered him.

Not because it was heartbreaking.

Because it was normal.

His children genuinely believed adults hurt children because children deserved it.

Someone had taught them that.

Someone they were supposed to trust.

Michael forced himself to smile.

"Listen to me carefully."

They both nodded.

"No matter what happens today..."

He looked directly into their eyes.

"...none of this is your fault."

Lily burst into tears.

She threw herself into his arms.

"I tried to be good..."

Michael hugged her tighter.

"I know."

"I cleaned my room."

"I know."

"I shared my toys."

"I know."

"I said sorry."

"I know."

"Why does she still hate me?"

Michael couldn't answer.

Because there was no answer that would make sense to a six-year-old.

A knock came from downstairs.

Three slow knocks.

Richard Donovan's voice drifted upward.

"Mr. Carter?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

He wiped Lily's tears.

Then quietly opened the bedroom door.

Richard stood alone in the hallway.

Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.

"May we speak privately?"

Michael nodded.

He turned to the children.

"Stay here."

Lily grabbed his sleeve.

"Don't leave us."

"I'll be right outside."

"Promise?"

He kissed her forehead.

"I promise."

The study was located at the opposite end of the second floor.

Michael closed the heavy oak door behind them.

Richard remained silent until he was certain they couldn't be overheard.

Then he removed his glasses.

"I owe you an apology."

Michael said nothing.

"I accepted Mrs. Carter as a client two weeks ago."

He sighed.

"She presented extensive evidence."

"What kind of evidence?"

"Videos."

Michael folded his arms.

"What did they show?"

"You shouting."

"I don't shout."

"I know that now."

Richard placed a leather folder on the desk.

Inside were printed screenshots.

Michael recognized the living room.

The kitchen.

The garage.

Different rooms.

Different days.

Each image captured him during arguments.

Each one made him appear intimidating.

"What you don't see..."

Richard continued.

"...is what happened before the recording started."

Michael flipped another page.

Another screenshot.

Another.

Another.

Every image told the same story.

Michael standing.

Vanessa crying.

Michael speaking.

Vanessa shrinking away.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Richard leaned forward.

"I've practiced family law for thirty-two years."

"I've represented celebrities."

"Politicians."

"Billionaires."

"I've seen fabricated evidence before."

"But this..."

He tapped the photographs.

"...is the most carefully constructed manipulation I've ever encountered."

Michael looked up.

"You believed it."

"I did."

Richard didn't hide it.

"Until I saw your son's injuries."

Silence lingered.

Finally Michael asked,

"What happens now?"

Richard hesitated.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"Whether she's already filed the petition."

Michael's stomach tightened.

"If she has?"

"The court may issue an emergency temporary custody order before a full hearing."

"Without speaking to me?"

"Yes."

"Without interviewing my children?"

"Sometimes."

Michael slammed his fist onto the desk.

The wood cracked.

Richard didn't flinch.

"I understand your frustration."

"No."

Michael's breathing became heavier.

"You don't."

"If she gets those children..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

Because they both knew what it meant.

Meanwhile...

Downstairs...

Vanessa calmly poured herself a glass of white wine.

Her hands no longer shook.

The brief panic upstairs had disappeared.

She smiled at her reflection in the dining room mirror.

"Almost there."

Her phone buzzed.

One new message.

Unknown Number

Status?

She typed only three words.

He's suspicious.

The reply arrived instantly.

Expected. Continue Phase Two.

Vanessa erased the conversation.

Then deleted the message thread entirely.

She walked toward the kitchen window.

Outside, rain had begun falling.

Soft at first.

Then harder.

She whispered to herself,

"You'll never beat me, Michael."

Back upstairs...

Michael removed the tiny recorder from his pocket.

"I need you to hear something."

Richard accepted the device.

Michael played the final minute.

Richard listened.

His expression slowly changed.

Confusion.

Concern.

Shock.

Then absolute disbelief.

The recording ended.

Richard remained frozen.

After several seconds he asked quietly,

"Did I hear that correctly?"

Michael nodded.

"'Inheritance.'"

"And another man."

Michael nodded again.

Richard replayed it.

This time wearing headphones from his briefcase.

When it finished, he slowly removed them.

"The male voice."

"What about it?"

"I've heard him before."

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

Richard frowned.

"I can't remember."

"But I'm certain I've spoken with him."

"When?"

"I don't know."

Michael stepped closer.

"Think."

Richard closed his eyes.

Faces flashed through his memory.

Clients.

Judges.

Executives.

Witnesses.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Then...

His eyes opened.

"I remember."

Michael waited.

Richard swallowed.

"I heard that voice..."

"...inside this very house."

Michael stared.

"What?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"About four months ago."

"You've been here before?"

"Yes."

"Vanessa invited me."

Michael's heartbeat accelerated.

"For what?"

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"I wasn't hired as her attorney."

"Then why were you here?"

He answered quietly.

"She wanted legal advice..."

"...about how to inherit your estate if you died unexpectedly."

The room became deathly still.

Michael felt every drop of blood drain from his face.

"What did you just say?"

Richard repeated every word.

"She asked how much of your fortune she would receive..."

"...if you died before changing your will."

Michael's breathing stopped.

He remembered that day.

Four months earlier.

Vanessa had told him she was spending the afternoon at a spa with friends.

She'd kissed him goodbye.

Smiled.

Texted him heart emojis all day.

All while secretly inviting one of New York's top attorneys into his home...

...to ask how rich she'd become if her husband died.

Before Michael could speak...

A deafening crash echoed from downstairs.

Glass shattered.

A child screamed.

"DADDY!"

Michael and Richard sprinted toward the hallway.

Lily's terrified voice echoed through the mansion.

Then came Ethan's cry.

Followed by Vanessa's scream.

"No! Put that down!"

Michael flew down the staircase two steps at a time.

As he reached the bottom...

He froze.

The front door stood wide open.

Rain poured into the foyer.

A massive floor-to-ceiling window had been shattered from the outside.

Broken glass covered the marble floor.

Lily and Ethan were backed into a corner.

Standing between them...

...was a tall man dressed entirely in black.

His face hidden beneath a hood.

One gloved hand gripped a metal crowbar.

The other...

...held a pistol fitted with a suppressor.

The stranger slowly raised the gun.

Not at Michael.

Not at Vanessa.

May you like

Directly...

At Ethan.
