Chapter 14: Nine Minutes

The command room erupted.

Michael didn't wait for anyone to finish speaking.

He sprinted toward the front door.

"Michael!" Sarah shouted.

He didn't stop.

Cross caught up with him just outside.

"If that's really Lily, this could be exactly what they want."

Michael spun around.

"My daughter is alone with a ticking timer!"

"I know."

"No."

Michael's voice cracked.

"You don't."

He climbed into the first SUV.

"I'm going."

Sarah exchanged a quick glance with Cross.

"Move!"

Within seconds, three police SUVs and two unmarked federal vehicles tore out of the Carter estate, blue lights flashing into the rainy night.

Eight Minutes Remaining

Warehouse Twelve stood at the edge of the old industrial district.

Abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rusted loading docks.

The river churned behind it under the storm.

Police established a perimeter before Michael's vehicle had even stopped.

A sniper team took positions.

Bomb technicians unloaded equipment.

Drones rose into the air.

Michael jumped out.

"Where is she?"

Officer Martinez pointed.

"There."

Lily sat alone on a wooden crate beneath a flickering overhead light.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She simply stared at the backpack resting on her lap.

The digital timer glowed bright red.

08:11

"Daddy..."

Her tiny voice carried across the empty warehouse.

Michael instinctively stepped forward.

A loudspeaker crackled overhead.

"One more step..."

The familiar distorted voice echoed through the building.

"...and the timer reaches zero immediately."

Michael froze.

Sarah quietly placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Don't."

His fists clenched.

Seven Minutes Remaining

Cross surveyed the warehouse.

"Too clean."

Sarah nodded.

"No footprints."

"No vehicles."

"No lookouts."

Michael looked at them in disbelief.

"What does that matter?"

Cross answered without taking his eyes off the building.

"It means they expected us."

The bomb technician slowly approached with a remote camera robot.

The little tracked machine rolled toward Lily.

The timer suddenly accelerated.

06:58

06:57

06:56

The technician stopped immediately.

"It's motion-linked."

Sarah frowned.

"So if anyone approaches..."

He nodded.

"It speeds up."

Michael felt helpless.

Every option made things worse.

Six Minutes Remaining

Then Lily spoke.

"Daddy..."

Michael looked up.

She wasn't looking at him.

She was looking slightly to his left.

At the warehouse roof.

Michael followed her gaze.

Nothing.

Then...

A tiny flash.

Glass.

Someone was watching through binoculars.

"Roof!"

Michael shouted.

A sniper immediately adjusted his scope.

"Negative."

"No visual."

The flash disappeared.

Whoever had been there...

Had already moved.

Five Minutes Remaining

Cross quietly walked to the side of the building.

He examined the walls.

Old brick.

Steel beams.

Then something caught his attention.

A fresh cable.

Running beneath the warehouse.

He crouched.

"Sarah."

She joined him.

"What?"

"This timer..."

He pointed toward the cable.

"...isn't operating alone."

The cable disappeared into a nearby maintenance tunnel.

Cross followed it with his flashlight.

"It leads underground."

Sarah immediately understood.

"They're watching from below."

Four Minutes Remaining

A tactical team entered the tunnel.

Forty seconds later...

Their radios came alive.

"Empty."

"Negative contacts."

"Wait..."

Silence.

Then:

"We found equipment."

Cross grabbed the radio.

"What kind?"

"Cameras."

"Transmitters."

"Fiber lines."

The voice paused.

"...and they're still warm."

Whoever had been operating the system...

Had fled only moments earlier.

Three Minutes Remaining

The bomb technician studied the backpack through a zoom lens.

Then frowned.

"That's strange."

Sarah looked over.

"What?"

"There are wires."

"That's normal."

"No."

He zoomed in further.

"They don't connect to anything."

Cross stepped beside him.

"You mean..."

The technician nodded.

"I think it's fake."

Michael stared.

"Fake?"

"I won't know until I open it."

"And if you're wrong?"

The technician didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Two Minutes Remaining

Michael closed his eyes.

Every instinct as a father screamed at him to run to Lily.

Every instinct as a survivor told him not to.

Then he remembered something.

The surveillance room.

The forged documents.

The fake custody order.

Every move Phoenix had made relied on one thing.

Fear.

He opened his eyes.

"They're watching."

Cross nodded.

"Almost certainly."

"They want to see whether fear controls us."

Michael took a deep breath.

Then he did something no one expected.

He stepped away from Lily.

Sarah grabbed his arm.

"What are you doing?"

"They're waiting for me to run toward her."

He pointed toward the surrounding buildings.

"If I were them..."

"...I'd already have another objective."

Cross's eyes widened.

"Ethan."

Michael nodded once.

"This was never about choosing between my children."

One Minute Remaining

Sarah shouted into her radio.

"All units!"

"Forget the warehouse."

"Find the secondary target."

Officers across the district immediately redeployed.

The distorted voice returned over the loudspeaker.

Its calm tone had disappeared.

"No."

Michael smiled for the first time that night.

"You've been trying to make me choose since this started."

He looked toward Lily.

"I'm done playing your game."

The countdown reached...

00:20

00:19

The bomb technician made his decision.

He sprinted forward.

Michael's heart nearly stopped.

The technician snatched the backpack from Lily's lap and dove behind a concrete pillar.

00:08

00:07

00:06

Everyone braced for the explosion.

Nothing.

The timer reached zero.

The display went dark.

Silence.

The technician slowly unzipped the backpack.

Inside...

No explosives.

No electronics.

Only a small digital voice recorder.

He pressed Play.

The distorted voice spoke one final time.

"Congratulations, Michael."

"You finally stopped reacting..."

"...and started thinking."

The recording ended.

At that exact moment, Sarah's radio erupted with frantic voices.

"Detective!"

"We found Ethan!"

Michael's face lit with hope.

But the next sentence stole it away just as quickly.

"...he's alive."

A pause.

Then:

"...but he's not alone."

Sarah tightened her grip on the radio.

"Who else is there?"

The officer answered, his voice shaking.

"...we found another little boy."

"Same age."

May you like

"Same hair."

"He looks almost identical to Ethan."
