Chapter 7: The DNA Test That Changed Everything

The word Prototype echoed through the mansion like a gunshot.

No one spoke.

No one even breathed.

Eight-year-old Ethan sat quietly on the sofa, hugging his sister while the adults stared at a government file describing him as if he were an object instead of a child.

Michael felt sick.

He crossed the room in three long strides and slammed the laptop shut.

Bang.

"Enough."

His voice was low.

Dangerously low.

"My son is not a project."

Special Agent Daniel Cross didn't argue.

Instead, he looked at Michael with something unexpected.

Pity.

"I hope you're right."

Michael's jaw tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Cross hesitated.

Then slowly reopened the laptop.

"There are more files."

Sarah Bennett nodded.

"We're reading all of them."

The forensic technician opened another document.

Medical Summary

Most of it consisted of scientific terminology.

Chromosomal markers.

Protein sequences.

Gene expressions.

Michael understood almost none of it.

Then one line caught his attention.

Biological father: Pending verification

Michael frowned.

"What?"

He looked closer.

Then read it again.

The line hadn't changed.

Biological father...

Pending verification.

His heart skipped.

Richard Donovan noticed it too.

"There must be some mistake."

Michael stared at the screen.

"There is."

Sarah looked toward the technician.

"Open the attached laboratory report."

The technician clicked.

A scanned DNA report appeared.

Date:

Eight years earlier.

The year Ethan had been born.

Michael frowned.

"I've never seen this."

Neither had anyone else.

Except...

Vanessa.

The laboratory header identified a private genetics institute in Boston.

The report listed three DNA samples.

Sample A.

Sample B.

Infant Male.

The conclusion sat near the bottom.

Probability of paternity: 0.00%

Michael stopped breathing.

Richard whispered,

"No..."

Sarah looked up.

"Mr. Carter..."

Michael didn't hear her.

He kept reading.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Zero percent.

Impossible.

Impossible.

Impossible.

He looked toward Ethan.

The little boy had his mother's brown eyes.

Michael had always believed he inherited them from Vanessa.

The same dark hair.

The same smile.

He had never questioned it.

Never needed to.

Because Ethan had been born six months after Michael and Vanessa married.

Michael had signed every hospital document.

Cut the umbilical cord.

Held him before anyone else.

He had never doubted for a second...

...that Ethan was his son.

"No."

The voice came from behind them.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her wrists were cuffed in front of her.

Two officers remained at her sides.

She stared at the DNA report.

Then slowly looked at Michael.

"Don't believe it."

Michael's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Tell me it's fake."

"It is."

"Tell me."

"It is!"

She shouted the words.

For a brief second, Michael wanted to believe her.

Then Sarah asked quietly,

"Have the report authenticated."

The technician nodded.

Within minutes, he contacted the laboratory archives.

The response arrived almost immediately.

The document...

Was genuine.

Created eight years ago.

Never altered.

Michael's knees nearly gave way.

He looked at Vanessa.

"Who is Ethan's father?"

Silence.

"I asked you a question."

More silence.

Michael stepped closer.

"Who."

She lowered her head.

"I can't tell you."

His voice cracked.

"You don't know?"

"I know."

"Then tell me."

"I can't."

Michael grabbed the back of a chair to steady himself.

Eight years.

Eight birthdays.

Eight Christmas mornings.

Eight years of bedtime stories.

First steps.

First words.

First day of school.

Every memory flashed through his mind.

Had all of it been built on a lie?

Then something inside him shifted.

He looked toward Ethan.

The boy sat crying quietly.

Terrified.

Confused.

Looking at Michael with frightened eyes.

Waiting.

Waiting to see if the only father he'd ever known would walk away.

Michael crossed the room.

Knelt.

Wrapped Ethan in both arms.

"You hear me?"

Ethan nodded weakly.

"I don't care what any paper says."

Tears rolled down Michael's face.

"You are my son."

Ethan burst into uncontrollable sobs.

"I don't want another daddy..."

Michael held him tighter.

"You never will."

Across the room...

Even Detective Bennett quietly looked away.

Vanessa watched the scene in silence.

For the first time that day...

She cried.

Real tears.

Not calculated.

Not theatrical.

One escaped before she could stop it.

Michael noticed.

He stood.

Walked toward her.

His face showed no anger now.

Only exhaustion.

"You lied to me."

She nodded.

"You lied every day for eight years."

Another nod.

"But you still won't tell me the truth."

She whispered,

"If I do..."

"They'll kill him."

The room froze.

Cross stepped forward.

"Who?"

Vanessa immediately realized what she'd said.

She closed her mouth.

Too late.

Cross's expression darkened.

"You know exactly who we're dealing with."

She remained silent.

Cross looked at Sarah.

"We're moving her into federal protective custody."

Sarah frowned.

"She's under arrest for attempted murder conspiracy."

Cross nodded.

"And if she stays in county jail..."

He looked directly at Vanessa.

"...she'll be dead before sunrise."

Michael's mind raced.

None of this made sense anymore.

Vanessa had abused the children.

Manipulated him.

Possibly hired a killer.

Yet now...

Someone wanted her dead.

Why?

Because she knew something?

Or because she had failed?

Just then...

The forensic technician called out.

"Detective!"

Everyone turned toward the laptop.

"I found surveillance footage."

"What kind?"

"It was hidden inside the encrypted folder."

Sarah clicked Play.

A grainy security video appeared.

Timestamp:

Nine years earlier.

A hospital corridor.

Doctors running.

Alarms sounding.

A woman screaming in pain.

Michael frowned.

"I know that hospital."

Richard looked surprised.

"So do I."

The camera angle changed.

A delivery room.

Medical staff surrounded a woman giving birth.

Her face was partially hidden.

Then...

The doctor lifted a newborn baby into the air.

The infant cried loudly.

A nurse attached a temporary identification bracelet.

The camera zoomed just enough for everyone to read it.

BABY BOY

ETHAN CARTER

Michael's eyes widened.

"What..."

Cross leaned forward.

"No..."

The footage continued.

Thirty seconds later...

The lights inside the room suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

People shouted.

Backup alarms activated.

When the emergency lights returned...

Chaos.

Doctors running.

Nurses screaming.

The newborn's bassinet...

Was empty.

The baby...

Had vanished.

The final frame froze automatically.

A hooded man carrying an infant disappeared through an emergency exit.

On the back of his jacket...

Was a silver phoenix emblem.

The room remained silent.

Then Michael whispered the only question that mattered.

"If Ethan was kidnapped that night..."

May you like

He slowly turned toward the little boy.

"...then whose child did we bring home from the hospital?"
