Chapter 9: The Memory Beneath the Rain

Ryan had spent years believing memories were permanent.

Like scars.

Like names.

Like the sound of someone’s voice.

But now he understood something terrifying.

Memories could be edited.

Removed.

Replaced.

And the most dangerous lies were not the ones people told you.

They were the ones you told yourself.

The bridge appeared in his mind again.

Rain falling heavily.

Car headlights cutting through the darkness.

Emily lying on the road.

His father standing nearby.

But there was something else.

Someone else.

A fourth person.

Ryan opened his eyes.

His breathing became uneven.

“I remember.”

Detective Hale immediately looked at him.

“What?”

Ryan looked around the room.

Everyone was waiting.

Derek.

Adrian.

Hale.

They all knew something.

They were all afraid of the same truth.

“The night at the bridge…”

Ryan swallowed.

“There was another person there.”

Derek’s face changed.

“Who?”

Ryan closed his eyes.

He searched through the broken pieces of memory.

A shadow.

A voice.

A hand.

Then suddenly…

A name.

“Lucas.”

The room became silent.

Adrian looked at Derek.

“You knew?”

Derek shook his head.

“No.”

Ryan stood.

“Lucas was there.”

Detective Hale frowned.

“That changes everything.”

Ryan looked at him.

“How?”

“Because Lucas Reed was officially investigating your father’s work at the time.”

Ryan stared.

“He was supposed to expose him.”

“Yes.”

Hale lowered his voice.

“But maybe he had another reason.”

The group gathered around the recovered Project Mirror files.

The more they discovered, the stranger everything became.

Lucas Reed was not simply an employee.

He was the person closest to Thomas Carter.

He knew every experiment.

Every subject.

Every weakness.

Including Ryan.

Derek opened a file.

“Look.”

Inside was a report.

SUBJECT 042:
RYAN CARTER.

Status:
Unstable memory retention.

Recommendation:
Complete memory removal.

Ryan stared.

“My father wanted to erase me.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Ryan looked at him.

“What?”

“Your father wanted to erase what you knew.”

Ryan froze.

The difference mattered.

Adrian continued.

“You were not the experiment.”

Ryan looked confused.

“Then what was?”

Adrian pointed at the screen.

“Emily.”

Ryan stopped.

A new file opened.

SUBJECT 041:
CLAIRE MORGAN.

Ryan felt his chest tighten.

Emily’s real name.

The report continued.

Subject demonstrates unusual resistance to psychological influence.

High emotional intelligence.

Unable to predict behavior.

Ryan frowned.

“She couldn’t be controlled.”

“Yes.”

Adrian nodded.

“That’s why your father was interested in her.”

Ryan looked at the files.

“So Project Mirror wasn’t about controlling everyone.”

“No.”

Adrian answered.

“It was about finding the people who couldn’t be controlled.”

Suddenly, Ryan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at him.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice.

Not Lucas.

Not Emily.

Thomas.

“Hello, Ryan.”

Ryan froze.

His hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?”

A quiet laugh.

“You sound just like your mother.”

Ryan’s expression changed.

“My mother?”

Detective Hale looked at him.

Ryan’s father continued.

“You finally remembered enough.”

“What do you want?”

Thomas was silent for a moment.

Then:

“I want you to stop searching for answers.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“After everything you did?”

A pause.

“You still think I’m the villain.”

Ryan’s eyes narrowed.

“Aren’t you?”

Thomas sighed.

“That’s the problem with people.”

“What?”

“They need someone to blame.”

Ryan looked angry.

“You erased my memory.”

“Yes.”

“You used Emily.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed people’s lives.”

A long silence.

Then Thomas said:

“Yes.”

Ryan stopped.

He expected denial.

Excuses.

But not acceptance.

“Why admit it?”

“Because you deserve the truth.”

Ryan frowned.

“What truth?”

Thomas’s voice became quieter.

“The reason I erased your memory…”

A pause.

“Was not to protect myself.”

Ryan felt a chill.

“Then why?”

Thomas answered:

“To protect you from Emily.”

Everyone froze.

Ryan looked at Adrian.

Then Derek.

No one spoke.

Thomas continued.

“She never told you what happened after the bridge.”

Ryan’s heart raced.

“What happened?”

“You think she saved you.”

A pause.

“But you saved her first.”

Ryan said nothing.

“You think she was your victim.”

Thomas whispered:

“She was the reason you became involved.”

Ryan’s voice lowered.

“What are you saying?”

Thomas answered:

“Ask Emily what she did before you met her.”

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Derek broke the silence.

“Ryan…”

“No.”

Ryan looked at him.

“I need the truth.”

Derek hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

Ryan stared.

“Yes.”

Derek looked at Adrian.

Then at Detective Hale.

Finally, he opened another hidden file.

One that had never been accessed.

The title appeared.

FIRST CONTACT.

Ryan clicked it.

A video loaded.

The screen showed Emily.

But not the Emily from the café.

Not the frightened girl from the kidnapping video.

This Emily looked different.

Confident.

Determined.

She stood inside a Project Mirror facility.

Talking to Thomas Carter.

Ryan felt his body become cold.

Because the timestamp appeared.

Five years ago.

Before the bridge.

Before the café.

Before Ryan ever noticed her.

Emily looked directly at Thomas.

And said:

“I found the person you were looking for.”

Thomas asked:

“Who?”

Emily smiled.

Then she answered:

“Ryan Carter.”

The video stopped.

Ryan stared at the frozen image.

His entire understanding shattered.

Emily had not discovered him by accident.

She had not simply entered his life.

She had found him first.

And the biggest question was no longer:

Why was Ryan chosen?

May you like

The question was:

Why did Emily choose him before he even knew her name?
