Chapter 5: The Person Inside the Circle

Ryan did not speak for almost a minute.
The warehouse was silent except for the sound of rain hitting the broken windows.
Derek’s final words kept repeating inside his head.
"The person who kidnapped Emily was someone she trusted."
Someone close.
Someone inside her life.
Someone who knew her secrets.
Ryan looked at Adrian.
For the first time, he did not see a monster.
He saw a man carrying the same confusion he felt.
A man searching for answers.
But that raised another question.
If Adrian was not the kidnapper…
Then who was?
“Where is Derek?” Ryan asked.
Adrian looked toward the exit.
“Alive.”
Ryan’s eyes narrowed.
“How do I know you’re telling the truth?”
“You don’t.”
The answer surprised Ryan.
Adrian continued.
“That’s the problem with the truth.”
He walked toward the table in the center of the warehouse.
“Everyone wants proof before they believe something.”
He placed Derek’s phone down.
“But sometimes the proof comes after the damage is already done.”
Ryan followed him.
“Why are you helping me?”
Adrian stopped.
A strange expression appeared on his face.
Not anger.
Not kindness.
Something in between.
“Because Emily asked me to.”
Ryan froze.
“What?”
Adrian reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“She gave me this before she disappeared.”
Ryan stared at it.
“Why didn’t you give it to the police?”
“Because the police were already compromised.”
Ryan frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Adrian opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A police officer standing outside Emily’s apartment.
Ryan recognized him.
Detective Hale.
His stomach dropped.
“No.”
Adrian watched his reaction.
“You trust him?”
Ryan remembered Detective Hale.
The calm voice.
The careful questions.
The way he seemed to understand everything.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian nodded.
“That’s the correct answer.”
Ryan looked at the picture again.
“What is this?”
“Emily took it three days before she disappeared.”
“Why was she watching Detective Hale?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Because she believed he was the only person who could expose the truth.”
Ryan felt overwhelmed.
Every person he trusted was becoming a question mark.
Derek lied.
Emily hid her identity.
Adrian appeared dangerous but might be helping.
And now the detective investigating the case might be involved.
Ryan ran a hand through his hair.
“This is insane.”
Adrian gave a small smile.
“You wanted to be a hero.”
Ryan looked at him.
“Don’t.”
“But now you’re learning something.”
“What?”
“Heroes don’t get perfect information.”
Adrian picked up the photo.
“They make choices while everything is falling apart.”
Ryan looked away.
Because he knew.
His biggest mistake was not creating the fake rescue.
His biggest mistake was believing he understood people.
Two hours later, Ryan and Adrian left the warehouse.
They moved separately.
Adrian told Ryan they could not be seen together.
“If someone is watching us,” Adrian said, “they need to believe we are still enemies.”
Ryan stopped.
“Wait.”
Adrian looked back.
“What?”
“Why should I trust you?”
Adrian stared at him.
“You shouldn’t.”
Ryan frowned.
“Then why are you helping me?”
Adrian answered quietly:
“Because I failed Emily once.”
Then he walked away.
Ryan stood alone in the rain.
Those words stayed with him.
Failed Emily once.
What happened between them?
Who was Adrian really?
The next morning, Ryan returned to the café.
Not because he wanted coffee.
Because he wanted answers.
The place looked exactly the same.
But Ryan felt like he was entering a completely different world.
He sat at Emily’s usual table.
The table where he watched her for months.
A few minutes later, the cashier approached.
“You’re Ryan, right?”
Ryan looked up.
The cashier smiled sadly.
“Emily talked about you.”
His heart stopped.
“What?”
The cashier looked confused.
“She never told you?”
Ryan slowly shook his head.
“No.”
The cashier looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
“She came here because of you.”
Ryan stared.
“What are you talking about?”
“She asked me about you.”
Ryan felt cold.
“When?”
“About two months ago.”
The cashier continued.
“She asked if you were a good person.”
Ryan’s expression changed.
“What did you say?”
The cashier smiled slightly.
“I told her you were quiet.”
A pause.
“But lonely.”
Ryan looked down.
The word hurt because it was accurate.
“What else did she ask?”
The cashier hesitated.
“She asked if you had ever done anything strange.”
Ryan froze.
“Strange?”
“Like following someone.”
Ryan felt his face become hot.
The cashier noticed.
“Ryan…”
“No.”
He stood up.
“I need to know.”
The cashier looked worried.
“Know what?”
Ryan stared at the empty chair where Emily used to sit.
“Why she was afraid of me.”
That afternoon, Detective Hale found Ryan.
Not at the station.
At his apartment.
Ryan opened the door and immediately felt something was wrong.
The detective was standing there alone.
“How did you find me?”
Detective Hale looked serious.
“We need to talk.”
Ryan did not move.
“About what?”
“About Emily.”
Ryan laughed quietly.
“Everyone wants to talk about Emily.”
Detective Hale looked at him carefully.
“You met Adrian Vale.”
Ryan’s body went still.
“How do you know that?”
The detective did not answer.
That was enough.
Ryan stepped backward.
“You’re watching me.”
“No.”
“Then how do you know?”
Detective Hale’s expression changed.
“Because Adrian contacted me.”
Ryan stared.
“What?”
“He warned me you were involved.”
The room became silent.
Ryan whispered:
“Involved in what?”
Detective Hale looked at him.
“Emily’s disappearance.”
The words felt impossible.
“I didn’t take her.”
“I know.”
The detective surprised him.
“I know you didn’t.”
Ryan frowned.
“Then why are you here?”
Detective Hale took out his phone.
He showed Ryan a video.
A security recording.
From the night Emily disappeared.
Ryan watched.
The alley.
Emily walking.
The stranger approaching.
But this time there was something different.
A second figure appeared.
Someone standing behind Ryan.
Someone Ryan never noticed.
Ryan’s face turned pale.
Because the person in the video was not Adrian.
Not Derek.
Not Detective Hale.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been near Emily every single day.
Someone Ryan knew.
The video zoomed in.
The person’s face became clear.
Ryan whispered:
“No…”
Detective Hale looked at him.
“You recognize him?”
Ryan could barely speak.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“He worked at the café.”
The cashier.
The person who served Emily every morning.
The person who knew her routine.
The person who asked questions about Ryan.
Detective Hale turned off the phone.
“His name is Lucas Reed.”
Ryan stared.
“Who is he?”
Detective Hale answered:
“That’s what we need to find out.”
Then Ryan’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
A voice he had heard many times.
A voice that made his blood run cold.
“Ryan…”
The cashier whispered.
“You should stop looking for Emily.”
Ryan froze.
“Lucas?”
A short silence.
Then:
“Because if you find her…”
His voice became darker.
“You’ll learn why she chose you.”
The call ended.
Ryan looked at Detective Hale.
And for the first time…
he understood something terrifying.
Emily did not randomly enter his life.
Someone placed her there.
May you like
And Ryan Carter was never the observer.
He was the target.
