Chapter 13: The Man Who Ordered His Own Erasure

Nobody in the room spoke.

The recording continued playing.

Ryan stood frozen, staring at himself from three years ago.

The person on the screen looked different.

Not physically.

But something about him was different.

His eyes.

His confidence.

The way he stood.

This was not the quiet man who sat alone at the café every morning.

This was someone who knew exactly what he was doing.

The younger Ryan looked directly into the camera.

“If anything happens…”

He took a deep breath.

“Remove my memory.”

The video paused.

The room remained silent.

Then Ryan whispered:

“That was me.”

Derek looked at him.

“Yes.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

He stepped away from the screen.

“I didn’t know.”

Adrian answered quietly:

“You didn’t know because you asked not to know.”

The words hit him harder than anything else.

Ryan turned.

“What?”

Adrian looked at the recording.

“You made the decision yourself.”

Ryan stared.

“Why?”

Nobody answered.

Then Detective Hale opened another file.

A document appeared.

Subject:
Ryan Carter.

Final Authorization.

The signature at the bottom made Ryan’s entire body freeze.

His own name.

Ryan Carter.

He had signed it.

The truth slowly returned.

Not all at once.

Pieces.

Fragments.

Like broken glass rising from the bottom of a lake.

The bridge.

The rain.

Emily crying.

His father.

Noah.

The gun.

And then...

A conversation.

Three years earlier.

Ryan stood inside the Project Mirror facility.

His face was bruised.

Emily was beside him.

“You don’t have to do this.”

Ryan looked at her.

“I do.”

“You don’t know what they will take from you.”

Ryan smiled sadly.

“Neither do you.”

Emily looked away.

“I can’t lose another person.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“You won’t.”

A pause.

“Because you won’t remember me.”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Ryan…”

He looked at her.

“If Thomas finds out I remember everything, he will come after you.”

“He already will.”

“Not if he thinks I’m useless.”

Ryan looked at the machine.

The memory procedure.

A choice.

A sacrifice.

“I’m not strong enough to beat him.”

Emily shook her head.

“That’s not true.”

Ryan smiled.

“It is.”

Then he said the words that destroyed him now.

“So make me forget.”

Ryan fell into a chair.

The room around him blurred.

“I chose this.”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“I asked you to erase me.”

“Yes.”

Ryan covered his face.

“Then why does it feel like betrayal?”

Nobody answered.

Because they understood.

Knowing the reason did not remove the pain.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

Again.

Everyone immediately reacted.

Detective Hale reached for his weapon.

Derek looked toward the door.

“Not again.”

A voice came through the speakers.

Thomas.

“You finally understand.”

Ryan stood.

“Where are you?”

Thomas laughed.

“Closer than you think.”

The screens turned on.

A live camera feed.

Emily’s room.

Thomas stood behind her.

But this time, something was different.

Emily was not afraid.

She looked angry.

Thomas noticed Ryan watching.

“You see?”

He smiled.

“She always believed she could save everyone.”

Ryan stared at Emily.

“Let her go.”

Thomas ignored him.

“Do you know why I chose you?”

Ryan said nothing.

“Because you were the perfect contradiction.”

Thomas walked around Emily.

“My research showed that fear creates predictable behavior.”

A pause.

“But love creates chaos.”

Ryan clenched his fists.

Thomas continued:

“Your mother loved you.”

“She became unpredictable.”

“Noah hated me.”

“He became predictable.”

“And you…”

Thomas smiled.

“You loved people who didn’t even know you existed.”

Ryan felt a strange anger.

Thomas was trying to turn everything into an experiment.

Even emotions.

Even sacrifice.

Even love.

“You’re sick.”

Thomas laughed.

“No.”

He looked at Ryan.

“I’m the only one who understands humanity.”

Ryan stepped toward the screen.

“You don’t understand people.”

A pause.

“You only understand how to break them.”

For the first time, Thomas looked annoyed.

Only for a second.

But Ryan noticed.

Then Thomas revealed something unexpected.

He turned the camera.

Another person entered the room.

Ryan froze.

Noah.

Alive.

Standing beside Emily.

But Noah was not a prisoner.

He was working with Thomas.

Ryan stared.

“No.”

Derek whispered:

“He switched sides.”

Noah looked directly into the camera.

His expression was calm.

“I never switched.”

Ryan felt betrayed.

“What?”

Noah spoke:

“I was always on his side.”

Emily looked at him.

“Noah…”

He ignored her.

Ryan’s voice became cold.

“You helped him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Noah looked at Thomas.

Then back at Ryan.

“Because he was right about one thing.”

Ryan waited.

“You and I are not normal.”

Ryan frowned.

“What?”

Noah continued:

“We were created differently.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Noah smiled slightly.

“The difference is…”

A pause.

“You wanted to be human.”

Ryan stared.

“And you didn’t?”

Noah’s expression changed.

“I wanted to be perfect.”

The screen went dark.

Seconds later, Ryan’s phone received a message.

From Emily.

Only one sentence.

“Don’t trust Noah.”

Ryan looked confused.

Another message appeared.

“He is not working with Thomas.”

Ryan froze.

A third message arrived.

“He is trying to get close enough to destroy him.”

Ryan looked at the dark screen.

Two possibilities.

Noah was a traitor.

Or Noah was playing the most dangerous game of all.

Then another message appeared.

This one changed everything.

“Ryan…”

“Your father has one weakness.”

A pause.

“He thinks everyone wants power.”

The final message arrived.

“But he never understood someone who only wants forgiveness.”

Ryan looked up.

Because suddenly he realized something.

The war against Thomas was not about defeating the smartest person in the room.

It was about finding the one person who had never stopped regretting what he became.

Noah Carter.

The brother hidden in the shadows.

May you like

Might be the only person who could destroy their father.

Or the person who would destroy them all.
