Chapter 1: The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

The first thing Ryan remembered after Emily disappeared was the sound of his own footsteps.

Not hers.

Not the stranger’s.

His own.

Running away.

For three days, that sound followed him everywhere.

It followed him when he closed his eyes at night. It followed him when he sat silently at his desk pretending to work. It followed him when he walked past the café where he had spent an entire year watching Emily smile at strangers.

Every step reminded him of the same truth.

He had been there.

He could have helped her.

And he ran.

The police had searched the alley until sunrise. Security cameras from nearby buildings were reviewed. Witnesses were questioned. The entire neighborhood was filled with officers, reporters, and volunteers searching for any trace of Emily.

But Ryan never came forward.

Not immediately.

Because he was terrified of telling the truth.

How could he explain that the reason he was there was because he created a fake attack?

How could he admit that Emily disappeared because of a plan designed by him?

The story sounded impossible.

It sounded like a confession.

So Ryan stayed silent.

And silence became his prison.

On the fourth morning after Emily vanished, Ryan finally returned to the café.

He did not know why.

Maybe he wanted to feel close to her.

Maybe he wanted to punish himself.

Maybe some part of him still believed that if he sat in the same chair and looked at the same door, Emily would suddenly walk in, holding her iced coffee, smiling like nothing had happened.

But she never came.

The café felt different without her.

The same music played.

The same customers laughed.

The same cashier greeted people.

Yet everything felt empty.

Ryan sat in the corner, staring at the entrance.

Then someone sat across from him.

Ryan looked up.

A man in a dark jacket placed a newspaper on the table.

Ryan immediately recognized him.

Detective Marcus Hale.

The detective investigating Emily’s disappearance.

Ryan’s heart stopped.

“Ryan Carter?”

Ryan swallowed.

“Yes.”

The detective looked at him carefully.

“You come here every morning.”

Ryan said nothing.

“You also came here every morning before Emily disappeared.”

A cold feeling moved through Ryan’s body.

“I liked the coffee.”

Detective Hale glanced at the untouched cup in front of him.

“You haven’t taken a single sip.”

Ryan looked down.

The detective leaned forward.

“I’m not here because you liked Emily.”

Ryan’s eyes lifted.

“I’m here because you knew something happened that night.”

The café suddenly felt too quiet.

Ryan forced a small laugh.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Yes, you do.”

The detective opened the newspaper.

A picture of Emily appeared on the front page.

“We found a camera recording from the street behind her workplace.”

Ryan froze.

“There is a problem.”

“What problem?”

Detective Hale studied his reaction.

“The camera shows Emily being followed.”

Ryan’s fingers tightened around his cup.

“But before the suspect appears…”

The detective paused.

“There is someone else.”

Ryan stopped breathing.

“What?”

“A man standing near the alley entrance.”

Ryan’s face turned pale.

Detective Hale watched him carefully.

“You know who that man is, don’t you?”

Ryan looked away.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

It was him.

The detective continued.

“You were there that night.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Ryan wanted to deny it.

He wanted to leave.

He wanted to disappear.

But then Detective Hale placed another photo on the table.

It was blurry.

Almost impossible to see.

But Ryan recognized the figure immediately.

The stranger.

The man who followed Emily.

The man who took her.

Ryan whispered:

“Who is he?”

Detective Hale did not answer immediately.

Instead, he asked:

“That’s what I was hoping you could tell me.”

Ryan stared at the photograph.

“I don’t know him.”

“But you saw him.”

Ryan remained silent.

Detective Hale leaned back.

“Three women disappeared in this city over the last six months.”

Ryan looked up.

“What?”

“Same pattern. Same time. Same type of location.”

The detective lowered his voice.

“And now Emily is missing.”

Ryan felt sick.

Because suddenly he understood something terrifying.

The stranger had not appeared randomly.

He was not just some dangerous man passing through an alley.

He was hunting.

And Ryan had unknowingly placed Emily directly in front of him.

“I thought…”

Ryan stopped.

Detective Hale noticed.

“You thought what?”

Ryan looked at the table.

“I thought someone else was following her.”

“Someone else?”

Ryan closed his eyes.

The truth was coming out.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“I thought it was my friend.”

The detective frowned.

“Your friend?”

Ryan nodded.

“I made a mistake.”

“What kind of mistake?”

Ryan’s hands began shaking.

For an entire year, he had imagined telling Emily how he felt.

He imagined romantic moments.

He imagined her realizing that he cared about her.

He imagined being the person who saved her.

But now, sitting across from a detective, he realized something.

He had never truly loved Emily.

Not the way love was supposed to be.

Because real love protected someone’s freedom.

It did not force itself into someone’s life.

It did not create danger just to feel needed.

Ryan whispered:

“I created a fake rescue.”

Detective Hale stared at him.

“Explain.”

Ryan told him everything.

The café.

The alley.

The plan.

Derek.

The moment he realized the man was not his friend.

And the moment he ran.

When he finished, Ryan expected anger.

He expected disgust.

Instead, Detective Hale looked troubled.

“Something doesn’t make sense.”

Ryan wiped his eyes.

“What?”

“If this man was a serial attacker…”

The detective tapped the photo.

“Why did he follow Emily only after you appeared?”

Ryan looked confused.

“What are you saying?”

Detective Hale placed another picture on the table.

This one was from a different camera.

A camera facing the café.

Ryan stared.

It showed Emily leaving work.

And standing across the street was the same stranger.

Watching her.

Waiting.

But the timestamp was different.

The image was taken two weeks before Emily disappeared.

Ryan felt the room spinning.

The man had already been watching Emily.

Before Ryan’s plan.

Before the fake rescue.

Before the alley.

Detective Hale spoke quietly.

“Ryan…”

Ryan looked at him.

“You didn’t bring this man to Emily.”

A pause.

“You accidentally interrupted him.”

Ryan stared at the photograph.

For the first time in four days, he felt something other than guilt.

Fear.

Pure, overwhelming fear.

Because if the detective was right…

Then Emily was never chosen because of Ryan.

She was chosen long before he entered her story.

And somewhere in the city, the man who took her was still watching.

May you like

Waiting.

Planning his next move.
