Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Emily’s Smile

Ryan arrived at the abandoned warehouse exactly eleven minutes before midnight.

He hated that he came.

Every instinct inside him screamed that it was a trap.

The messages.

Derek’s disappearance.

The warning that Emily was hiding something.

Everything felt like a carefully designed puzzle, and Ryan was walking directly into the center of it.

But he had no choice.

Not anymore.

For a year, he had watched Emily from a distance.

He had memorized her habits.

Her favorite drink.

The time she arrived at the café.

The way she tucked her hair behind her ear when she was nervous.

He thought those details meant he knew her.

Now he realized something painful.

He knew everything about the version of Emily he created in his mind.

Not the real one.

The warehouse stood at the edge of the city, abandoned for years.

Broken windows covered the walls.

The old metal doors moved slightly with the wind.

Ryan stepped inside.

His flashlight moved across empty shelves and forgotten equipment.

“Derek?”

His voice echoed.

No answer.

Ryan walked deeper.

Then he heard it.

A sound.

A chair moving.

He turned quickly.

A figure stepped out from the darkness.

Ryan almost attacked.

Then he stopped.

“Derek?”

His friend looked terrible.

His clothes were dirty.

His face had bruises.

But he was alive.

Ryan rushed toward him.

“What happened to you?”

Derek pushed him away.

“Don’t come closer.”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

Derek looked around nervously.

“We don’t have much time.”

“Who did this?”

Derek ignored the question.

“You need to leave.”

Ryan stared at him.

“No.”

Derek’s expression changed.

“You don’t understand.”

“No, you don’t understand.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Emily is missing because of me.”

Derek looked away.

“That’s not true.”

“Yes, it is.”

“You think this started with your stupid plan?”

Ryan went silent.

Derek looked at him with a mixture of anger and sadness.

“Ryan, you have no idea what you walked into.”

The words sounded familiar.

Just like the message.

Ryan’s voice lowered.

“Tell me the truth.”

Derek remained silent.

“Who is that man?”

Derek looked toward the warehouse entrance.

Then whispered:

“His name is Adrian Vale.”

Ryan frowned.

“Who is Adrian Vale?”

Derek swallowed.

“The man who has been following Emily for months.”

Ryan felt a cold wave move through him.

“Why?”

“That’s the question.”

Derek looked at him.

“Because Adrian isn't interested in random victims.”

Ryan’s expression changed.

“What are you saying?”

Derek took a deep breath.

“He was looking for something.”

“What?”

“Emily.”

Silence.

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Derek stared at him.

“You still think she’s the innocent girl from the café?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

Because some part of him wanted to believe that.

The girl with the gentle smile.

The girl who never hurt anyone.

The girl he spent a year admiring.

Derek continued.

“Ryan, before Emily came to this city, she had another name.”

Ryan looked confused.

“What?”

Derek reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small folder.

Inside were several photographs.

The first photo showed Emily.

But younger.

Standing beside a man.

Ryan recognized him instantly.

Adrian Vale.

His stomach dropped.

The second photo showed Emily entering a government building.

The third showed her meeting with someone in secret.

Ryan looked up.

“What is this?”

Derek’s voice became quiet.

“Emily is not who you think she is.”

Ryan looked back at the photos.

“No.”

Derek shook his head.

“She was part of something.”

“What?”

“We don't know.”

Ryan felt anger rising.

“You’re telling me the girl disappeared because she has secrets?”

“I’m telling you she was being hunted before you ever noticed her.”

Ryan looked down.

His hands trembled.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Derek laughed bitterly.

“Because I didn’t know at first.”

He pointed at the photos.

“I only found out after I started looking into Adrian.”

Ryan frowned.

“Why were you looking into him?”

Derek hesitated.

Then answered:

“Because I saw him before that night.”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

Derek nodded.

“The night of your fake rescue.”

The warehouse suddenly felt colder.

“I was there.”

Ryan stared.

“But you said you were at Mason’s bar.”

“I lied.”

The confession hit harder than Ryan expected.

“Why?”

Derek looked ashamed.

“Because I followed Emily.”

Ryan took a step back.

“You followed her?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you stop him?”

Derek’s face tightened.

“Because when I saw Adrian…”

He paused.

“I realized he wasn't there because of Emily.”

Ryan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Derek looked directly at him.

“He was waiting for someone else.”

A silence followed.

Ryan whispered:

“Who?”

Derek looked at him.

“You.”

Ryan felt his entire body go numb.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why would he wait for me?”

Derek opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, a loud sound came from above.

A metal object fell.

Both men looked up.

Someone was standing on the second floor.

Watching them.

Ryan’s blood froze.

The figure stepped into the light.

Adrian Vale.

The man from the alley.

The man who disappeared with Emily.

Derek immediately grabbed Ryan.

“Run.”

But Adrian did not move.

He simply stared at Ryan.

Then he smiled.

Not an angry smile.

Not a threatening smile.

A familiar smile.

Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

“You finally came.”

Ryan stepped backward.

“How do you know me?”

Adrian walked down the stairs slowly.

“Because Emily talked about you.”

Ryan stopped.

“What?”

Adrian looked almost amused.

“She watched you every morning at the café.”

The words made Ryan’s heart stop.

“No.”

“She knew your name.”

Ryan shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Adrian continued.

“She knew where you lived.”

Ryan felt sick.

“She knew your routine.”

Every memory Ryan had of Emily suddenly changed.

The smiles.

The moments they almost spoke.

The times he thought she ignored him.

Maybe she wasn't ignoring him.

Maybe she was watching him.

Adrian stopped a few meters away.

“The funny thing about obsession…”

He looked at Ryan.

“Is that people always think they are the ones watching.”

Ryan couldn’t speak.

Adrian continued.

“But sometimes…”

A pause.

“They are the ones being studied.”

Then the lights inside the warehouse suddenly turned off.

Complete darkness.

Ryan heard footsteps.

Then a scream.

Not his.

Derek’s.

When the lights returned seconds later...

Derek was gone.

And Adrian was standing exactly where he had been.

Holding a small object in his hand.

Ryan stared.

“What did you do?”

Adrian looked at the object.

A phone.

Derek’s phone.

Then he looked at Ryan.

“You want to find Emily?”

Ryan said nothing.

Adrian threw the phone toward him.

“Then watch the video.”

Ryan caught it.

The screen was already open.

A video file.

Recorded two nights ago.

Ryan pressed play.

The image appeared.

Emily was sitting in a dark room.

Alive.

But her face was completely different from the girl Ryan knew.

She looked terrified.

And the first words she spoke destroyed everything Ryan believed.

“Ryan Carter…”

Emily looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this…”

She swallowed.

“I'm sorry.”

A pause.

Then she whispered:

May you like

“Because the reason Adrian found me…”

“Is because of you.”
