Chapter 11: The Brother in the Shadows

Ryan stared at the black screen of his phone.
For several seconds, he could not move.
The message was only a few words.
But it changed everything.
Your mother had another child.
A brother.
A person he never knew existed.
A person hidden from him his entire life.
Ryan wanted to believe it was another manipulation from Thomas.
Another psychological attack.
Another attempt to break him.
But something inside him felt different.
Because Thomas did not sound like he was threatening him.
He sounded like he was revealing something.
And that scared Ryan more.
A lie could be fought.
The truth was harder.
The next morning, Ryan returned to the hidden room beneath the police station.
Everyone was already there.
Detective Hale.
Derek.
Adrian.
They immediately noticed his expression.
“What happened?” Derek asked.
Ryan placed his phone on the table.
“Thomas contacted me.”
The room became silent.
“What did he say?” Adrian asked.
Ryan looked at all of them.
“My mother had another child.”
Nobody reacted.
And that terrified him.
Ryan narrowed his eyes.
“You knew.”
Derek looked away.
Adrian remained silent.
Ryan’s voice became sharper.
“You all knew.”
Detective Hale finally spoke.
“We suspected.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
He looked around.
“Another secret.”
Derek stepped closer.
“Ryan, listen.”
“No.”
Ryan shook his head.
“Every person in my life has been deciding what I deserve to know.”
His voice cracked.
“My father.”
“My mother.”
“Emily.”
“You.”
Nobody interrupted.
Because they knew he was right.
Derek lowered his head.
“You have every reason to be angry.”
Ryan looked at him.
“Who is he?”
A long silence.
Then Adrian answered.
“His name is Noah Carter.”
Ryan froze.
The name felt strangely familiar.
“Where is he?”
Adrian looked at the files.
“That’s complicated.”
“Why?”
“Because Noah was not hidden from the world.”
Ryan frowned.
“Then why have I never heard of him?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Because he was hidden from you.”
A file was opened.
NOAH CARTER.
Age: Unknown.
Status: Active.
Connection:
Thomas Carter.
Claire Morgan.
Project Mirror.
Ryan stared.
“He was involved too?”
Derek nodded.
“Noah was different from you.”
“How?”
“He believed your father was right.”
Ryan felt cold.
“He supported him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Derek looked at the report.
“Because Thomas convinced him that emotions were weaknesses.”
Ryan looked away.
A strange sadness appeared.
He had spent years believing he was the only person damaged by his father.
But someone else had been shaped by him too.
Someone who became exactly what Thomas wanted.
Later that day, they tracked Noah’s last known location.
An old research facility outside the city.
The same place where Project Mirror began.
Ryan stood outside the building.
The walls were covered with vines.
The windows were broken.
But he could feel something inside.
A connection.
A memory.
A piece of his past waiting.
Adrian looked at him.
“You don’t have to go in.”
Ryan looked at the building.
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
Ryan answered quietly:
“Because I spent my whole life running from things I didn’t understand.”
A pause.
“I’m done running.”
They entered.
Inside, the facility was almost untouched.
Old computers.
Medical equipment.
Documents scattered everywhere.
Then Ryan saw something.
A wall.
Covered with photographs.
Hundreds of them.
People.
Subjects.
Experiments.
And in the center…
Two pictures.
Ryan.
Noah.
A note beneath them.
THE TWO RESPONSES.
Ryan stared.
“What does that mean?”
Derek walked closer.
“The experiment.”
Ryan looked at him.
“What experiment?”
Derek pointed.
“Your father wanted to prove something.”
“What?”
“That humans respond to trauma in two ways.”
Ryan waited.
“Some people become afraid.”
Derek pointed to Ryan’s photo.
“Some become compassionate.”
Then he pointed to Noah.
“Others become controlling.”
Ryan looked at his brother’s picture.
“He created us.”
“Yes.”
“Like an experiment.”
Nobody answered.
Because that was the truth.
A sound echoed through the building.
Footsteps.
Everyone turned.
A man appeared at the end of the hallway.
Ryan stopped breathing.
He looked older than Ryan expected.
Calm.
Confident.
But the eyes…
The eyes were familiar.
“Noah.”
The man smiled.
“So you finally remember me.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“You know who I am.”
Noah laughed softly.
“Of course.”
“Then why did you hide?”
Noah looked around the abandoned facility.
“Because you were safer without me.”
Ryan frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
Noah walked closer.
“You think Thomas was the only dangerous person in our family?”
Ryan stared.
“What are you saying?”
Noah stopped.
“I’m saying our father created monsters.”
A pause.
“But he didn’t create the worst one.”
Ryan felt uneasy.
“Who?”
Noah looked directly at him.
“You.”
Silence.
Ryan felt anger rise.
“You’re lying.”
Noah shook his head.
“No.”
He looked almost sad.
“You just don’t remember.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“What don’t I remember?”
Noah reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
A photograph from the night of the bridge.
Ryan took it.
His hands trembled.
The image showed Ryan standing beside Emily.
But something was different.
Ryan was holding a gun.
Ryan dropped the photo.
“No.”
Noah watched him.
“You don’t remember because Emily removed that memory.”
Ryan looked horrified.
“That’s impossible.”
Noah whispered:
“The night you saved Emily…”
A pause.
“You weren’t only saving her.”
“You were trying to kill someone.”
Ryan stared.
“Who?”
Noah looked toward the darkness behind him.
Then answered:
“Our father.”
The facility lights suddenly turned off.
Complete darkness.
A gunshot echoed.
Everyone froze.
When the emergency lights returned…
Noah was gone.
May you like
And on the floor was a message written in red:
ASK EMILY WHAT SHE MADE YOU DO.
