Chapter 4: The Girl Who Knew His Name

Ryan watched the video again.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Each time, he waited for something different.
A hidden clue.
A misunderstanding.
A sign that Emily was being forced to say those words.
But nothing changed.
Her eyes were real.
Her fear was real.
And the sentence remained the same.
“Because the reason Adrian found me is because of you.”
The phone shook in Ryan’s hand.
He looked at Adrian.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian did not answer.
Ryan stepped forward.
“You know what happened. You know everything.”
Adrian stared at him calmly.
“That depends on what you want to know.”
Ryan’s anger exploded.
“Emily disappeared because of me!”
His voice echoed through the warehouse.
“I thought I was saving her!”
Adrian’s expression did not change.
“No.”
He walked closer.
“You thought you were becoming someone important.”
The words cut deeper than Ryan expected.
Because they were true.
For a year, he had told himself he wanted to protect Emily.
But a part of him wanted something else.
He wanted her to look at him.
He wanted her to need him.
He wanted to become the hero in a story where he was never the main character.
Adrian stopped.
“And that weakness is exactly why you were chosen.”
Ryan stared.
“Chosen?”
“Yes.”
“By who?”
Adrian looked toward the phone.
“By Emily.”
Ryan froze.
“No.”
Adrian said nothing.
Ryan shook his head.
“You’re lying.”
“Am I?”
Adrian pointed at the video.
“Watch the rest.”
Ryan looked back at the screen.
The video continued.
Emily sat in a small room.
The lighting was poor.
Her hands were tied.
But her voice was steady.
“I know Ryan thinks he knows me.”
She looked down.
“He thinks I’m just the girl from the café.”
Ryan’s chest tightened.
“But that was never true.”
Emily looked directly into the camera.
“My real name is not Emily.”
The world seemed to stop.
Ryan whispered:
“What?”
The video continued.
“My name is Claire Morgan.”
Ryan felt like the ground disappeared beneath him.
Emily.
Claire.
Two names.
Two identities.
“I spent years running from people who wanted something my father left behind.”
The video showed her holding a small black object.
A flash drive.
“I thought changing my identity would protect me.”
She looked terrified.
“But someone found me.”
Ryan stared.
Adrian stood silently beside him.
The video continued.
“I noticed Ryan almost immediately.”
Ryan’s breathing changed.
“I noticed him because he was always there.”
A pause.
“Every morning.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
The memories came back.
The café.
The corner table.
The quiet mornings.
But now they felt different.
Emily had noticed him.
She had always noticed him.
“I knew he liked me.”
Ryan opened his eyes.
“She knew?”
Adrian looked at him.
“Yes.”
Ryan ignored him.
The video continued.
“At first, I thought Ryan was dangerous.”
Ryan felt a painful shock.
Dangerous.
That word stayed in his mind.
“Because someone who watches another person every day without speaking…”
Emily looked away.
“Can be unpredictable.”
Ryan lowered his head.
He wanted to argue.
He wanted to say he only cared.
But he couldn't.
Because he knew how it looked from the outside.
“I investigated Ryan.”
Emily continued.
“I learned about his job. His routine. His friends.”
Ryan looked up.
“So she was watching me…”
Adrian nodded.
“She was trying to figure out if you were connected to the people chasing her.”
Ryan stared.
“I wasn’t.”
Adrian smiled slightly.
“You weren’t supposed to be.”
The video continued.
“But then Ryan made a mistake.”
Emily’s expression changed.
“The fake rescue.”
Ryan felt sick.
“She knew.”
“Yes,” Adrian said.
Ryan turned.
“How?”
“Because she was already following you.”
The answer destroyed him.
Emily had been watching him.
While he thought he was secretly watching her.
The video continued.
“When Ryan created that plan, he accidentally changed everything.”
Emily whispered:
“He drew attention to himself.”
Ryan looked confused.
“Why?”
The answer came from Adrian.
“Because your fake attack looked exactly like the attacks committed by someone else.”
Ryan looked at him.
“What?”
Adrian continued.
“There was another person creating staged rescues.”
Ryan felt a chill.
“Someone else?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian’s face became serious.
“To gain trust.”
Ryan understood.
A fake hero.
Someone who saved victims.
Someone who looked like a protector.
But was actually hunting them.
Adrian looked at him.
“Your idea was not original.”
Ryan felt humiliated.
“It was never about Emily.”
“No.”
Adrian looked toward the darkness outside.
“It was about control.”
The warehouse became silent.
Then Ryan noticed something.
“Where is Derek?”
Adrian’s expression changed slightly.
“He knows too much.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Derek discovered the truth before you did.”
Ryan clenched his fists.
“Did you hurt him?”
Adrian did not answer.
And that answer scared Ryan more.
Suddenly, a sound came from the phone.
A new video file appeared.
Created moments ago.
Ryan looked at the screen.
The title was:
DEREK_LAST_MESSAGE.
He pressed play.
Derek appeared.
His face was bruised.
But he was alive.
“Ryan…”
His voice was weak.
“If you’re seeing this, it means I failed.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Derek…”
Derek looked into the camera.
“I need you to listen carefully.”
He took a breath.
“Everything we believed about Emily was wrong.”
Ryan looked at Adrian.
Derek continued:
“But everything we believe about Adrian is also wrong.”
Ryan froze.
“What?”
Derek’s voice became urgent.
“Adrian is not the person who took Emily.”
Silence.
Ryan slowly turned toward Adrian.
Adrian did not react.
Derek continued.
“He’s the only person trying to find her.”
Ryan’s eyes widened.
The man he believed was the monster…
might not be the monster.
Then Derek said the final sentence:
“The person who kidnapped Emily…”
A pause.
“Was someone she trusted.”
The video ended.
Ryan stood completely still.
Then his phone received a new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“Stop looking for Emily.”
Another message arrived.
“She already found you.”
Ryan looked around the warehouse.
Every shadow suddenly felt alive.
Because somewhere nearby…
someone was watching.
And this time…
Ryan knew one terrifying truth.
The person behind Emily’s disappearance was not a stranger.
It was someone close enough to know exactly how she thought.
May you like
Someone close enough to know Ryan too.
Someone who had been part of the story from the beginning.
