The second contained transactions.
Who paid.
Who killed.
Who ordered.
And who inherited.
We found the second ledger beneath the estate.
Inside was one horrifying entry.

ANTONIO MORETTI
To:
VINCENT MORETTI
Then beneath it:
CONDITION: MURDER ADRIAN
I stared at the words.
My father had intended for me to kill Adrian.
I never knew.
He had built my entire life around a test.
Then Marcus entered the room.
He wasn't carrying a gun.
He was crying.
“I tried to stop it.”
“What?”
“Your father ordered me to kill Adrian eighteen years ago.”
I stared.
“You?”
Marcus nodded.
“I refused.”
“So you faked the accident.”
“Yes.”
“Then who died?”
Marcus looked down.
“A man who volunteered.”
He handed me a photograph.
Tony.
Young.
Standing beside the body.
Tony hadn't been my security chief for twenty-three years.
He had been controlling my family for twenty-three years.
Then Marcus said:
“Tony didn't survive tonight.”
I looked at him.
“He did.”
Marcus shook his head.
“That wasn't Tony.”
My blood froze.
“Then who was it?”
