Empty.
Elena lowered it.
She smiled.
“Your mother taught me that trick.”
My mother laughed.
“You finally understand.”
The entire confrontation had been staged.
They wanted Daniel to believe Elena had turned against us.
The plan worked.
Daniel entered the room.
He was holding a detonator.
“You should have killed me when you had the chance.”
Marcus raised his gun.
Daniel pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
He looked confused.
Adrian smiled.
“We disconnected the explosives two hours ago.”
Daniel's face collapsed.
He raised his weapon.
Marcus shot him.
Daniel fell.
Silence.
I thought it was over.
Then Marcus walked toward him.
Daniel laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“What?”
“Tony wasn't the enemy.”
Marcus froze.
Daniel smiled.
“The real enemy is the man you never suspected.”
He looked directly at me.
I turned toward Adrian.
Adrian was holding the Black Ledger.
Then he said:

“You should never have trusted me.”
He fired.
