CHAPTER 8: THE HUSBAND WHO CAME BACK FROM HELL

CHAPTER 8: THE HUSBAND WHO CAME BACK FROM HELL

The image on the screen did not make sense.

Elena stared at it.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

Ryan Carter.

Standing beside Victor Hale.

Alive.

Standing.

Smiling.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The mansion became so quiet that Elena could hear her own heartbeat.

Slow.

Heavy.

Confused.

Because Ryan was supposed to be under Dominic’s control.

He was supposed to be in the hospital.

He was supposed to be afraid.

But now…

He looked different.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost like the old Ryan.

The Ryan who walked into a room and made everyone believe he belonged there.

The Ryan she married.

The Ryan she loved.

Until she saw the truth behind his eyes.

“Elena.”

Dominic’s voice pulled her back.

She looked at him.

His face was cold.

But his eyes were calculating.

“Stay behind me.”

She almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because after everything…

Her father still said the same thing.

Protecting her was the one thing he never stopped doing.

Then Ryan’s voice came through the speakers.

“Elena.”

Her body reacted.

She hated that it did.

A voice could carry memories.

A voice could remind you of mornings together.

Late-night conversations.

Promises.

A thousand little moments that were now poisoned.

“What do you want?”

Her voice was colder than she expected.

Ryan looked directly into the camera.

“I need you to understand something.”

“No.”

A pause.

“You need to understand.”

Elena stared.

“You broke my leg.”

Ryan’s expression changed slightly.

Guilt.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“I know.”

“You locked me in a basement.”

“I know.”

“You left me there.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know.”

The repetition made her angry.

Not because he denied it.

Because he accepted it.

Like those things were simply events.

Not crimes.

Not betrayal.

Not the destruction of a person.

“Then why are you standing there?”

Ryan looked at Victor.

Then back at her.

“Because I finally know the truth.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Do not listen to him.”

Ryan smiled.

“There he is.”

Victor’s voice appeared through another speaker.

“The great Dominic Romano.”

A pause.

“The man who always thinks he knows everything.”

Dominic looked around.

“Victor.”

A quiet laugh.

“You sound disappointed.”

“I expected you to hide longer.”

Victor smiled on the screen.

“And I expected you to die before seeing your daughter again.”

The words hit Elena.

Dominic’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Something darker.

A memory.

Twenty years earlier.

Dominic Romano stood in a warehouse.

Rain poured outside.

Victor Hale stood across from him.

“You cannot protect everyone.”

Dominic’s eyes were cold.

“I can protect my family.”

Victor smiled.

“That is why you will lose.”

Then the explosion happened.

The night Elena’s mother disappeared.

The night Dominic believed he lost everything.

But now…

Victor was standing again.

And he had taken everything from that night.

Back inside the mansion.

Ryan continued.

“You want to know why I joined him?”

Elena said nothing.

Ryan answered anyway.

“Because Victor showed me the truth.”

“What truth?”

Ryan looked at Dominic.

“Your father was never the victim.”

The room changed.

Elena looked at Dominic.

A tiny doubt appeared.

Because that was Ryan’s weapon.

Not violence.

Not money.

Doubt.

“You’re lying.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You spent your whole life believing your father protected you.”

A pause.

“But what if he was protecting himself?”

Dominic’s expression remained controlled.

But Elena noticed.

A small movement.

A reaction.

And it scared her.

“Dad?”

He did not answer immediately.

That was the worst part.

Because silence was becoming an answer.

“Tell me.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Elena…”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“Not another secret.”

Isabella stood behind them.

Tears filled her eyes.

“He deserves to know.”

Dominic looked at her.

The two people who had loved Elena more than anyone else…

Were finally standing on opposite sides of a truth.

Victor’s voice returned.

“Let me show you something.”

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

Old footage.

Twenty years ago.

A younger Dominic.

A younger Victor.

And a meeting.

Elena watched.

Her father was there.

But so was someone else.

A businessman.

A powerful figure.

Someone Elena recognized.

The father of Madeline Brooks.

Richard Brooks.

Her breath stopped.

“What…”

Ryan spoke quietly.

“Now you understand.”

The video showed documents being exchanged.

Money.

Contracts.

Secret agreements.

Then Dominic said something.

A sentence that made Elena freeze.

“I need the girl away from this.”

The recording ended.

Silence.

Elena turned slowly toward her father.

“What was that?”

Dominic looked at her.

“It is not what you think.”

“Then tell me what it is.”

He stayed quiet.

And Elena felt something inside her collapse.

Because after everything…

The hardest thing was not betrayal.

It was uncertainty.

Not knowing who was telling the truth.

Ryan continued.

“Victor told me everything.”

Elena looked at the screen.

“And you believed him?”

“I saw the evidence.”

“You also saw an opportunity.”

Ryan looked away.

That silence was enough.

Elena nodded slowly.

“There it is.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What?”

“The truth.”

A pause.

“You didn’t join him because you believed him.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You joined him because you thought you could benefit.”

Ryan said nothing.

Because she was right.

Suddenly…

The mansion shook.

An explosion.

Not large.

But enough to destroy the communication equipment.

The screens went black.

The lights flickered.

Everyone moved.

Dominic immediately grabbed Elena.

“Move.”

They rushed toward the back corridor.

Isabella followed.

Security surrounded them.

But before they reached the exit…

A voice echoed behind them.

“Leaving already?”

Everyone stopped.

Ryan stood at the end of the hallway.

No screen.

No distance.

Face to face.

Elena stared.

“You came here.”

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at her.

For a moment…

The old Ryan returned.

The man who loved her.

The man who held her hand.

The man who promised forever.

Then it disappeared.

“Because Victor wants something from you.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“And you?”

Ryan looked at Elena.

“I want forgiveness.”

Elena almost smiled.

A painful smile.

“Forgiveness?”

“Yes.”

“You think saying sorry fixes this?”

Ryan looked down.

“No.”

“Then why?”

His voice became quiet.

“Because I know what Victor is planning.”

Dominic narrowed his eyes.

“What?”

Ryan looked at him.

“He doesn't want the file.”

A pause.

“He never wanted the company.”

Another pause.

“He wants Elena.”

Everyone froze.

Elena felt cold.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan looked at her.

“It means everything that happened…”

“The affair.”

“The divorce plan.”

“The attack.”

“The kidnapping.”

“All of it was designed for one reason.”

He stepped closer.

“To make you desperate enough to open the file yourself.”

Dominic’s face changed.

Because he understood.

The file was not hidden in a location.

Not in a safe.

Not in a company.

It was connected to Elena.

Her identity.

Her memories.

Her blood.

“What is in the file?”

Ryan looked at Dominic.

“You know.”

Dominic remained silent.

Ryan whispered:

“Her mother’s secret.”

Elena looked at Isabella.

Her mother looked away.

And that was the moment Elena knew.

The final secret was not about her father.

Not about Victor.

Not about Ryan.

It was about herself.

Then a slow clap echoed through the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Victor Hale stepped from the shadows.

Alone.

Calm.

Smiling.

“You finally understand.”

Dominic’s security raised their weapons.

Victor did not care.

Because he knew something they did not.

He looked at Elena.

“You spent twenty years asking why your family disappeared.”

A pause.

“You spent twenty years thinking you were abandoned.”

He smiled.

“But the truth is…”

He stepped closer.

“You were never abandoned.”

Elena stared.

“Then what happened?”

Victor looked at Dominic.

Then Isabella.

Then Ryan.

Finally…

At Elena.

“You were hidden.”

A pause.

“Because your parents were afraid of what you would become.”

The hallway froze.

Elena whispered:

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“Ask your father.”

May you like

Dominic said nothing.

And that silence was louder than any confession.
