CHAPTER 7: THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED FOR TWENTY YEARS

CHAPTER 7: THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED FOR TWENTY YEARS

The old mansion stood at the edge of the city.

Forgotten.

Silent.

Almost invisible beneath the overgrown trees surrounding it.

To anyone else, it was just an abandoned property.

A place where old memories went to die.

But Dominic Romano knew better.

Some places were not abandoned.

They were buried.

And this mansion was a graveyard full of secrets.

Elena sat in the back seat of the car, staring through the window.

She had imagined meeting her mother thousands of times.

When she was a child.

When she was eighteen.

Even during the years she told herself she no longer cared.

She imagined different scenarios.

Her mother running toward her.

Her mother apologizing.

Her mother explaining why she disappeared.

But now that the moment was approaching…

Elena felt nothing but fear.

Not fear of her mother.

Fear of the truth.

Because every truth she discovered recently destroyed something she believed.

Her husband.

Her marriage.

Her childhood.

Her father.

And now…

Her mother.

“Are you ready?”

Dominic asked from the front seat.

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

A small silence.

“Are you?”

Dominic looked out the window.

“No.”

That answer surprised her.

“You’re not?”

“No.”

“Why?”

His voice became quiet.

“Because I spent twenty years imagining this moment.”

A pause.

“And now I’m afraid reality will hurt more than imagination.”

For the first time, Elena saw something she had never seen before.

Her father was not afraid of enemies.

He was not afraid of losing money.

He was not afraid of death.

But he was afraid of seeing his wife again.

The car stopped.

Dominic’s security team moved first.

They checked the area.

No movement.

No threats.

Nothing.

Too quiet.

Elena noticed.

“This feels wrong.”

Dominic looked at her.

“You feel it too?”

She nodded.

He gave a small signal.

Everyone became more alert.

They entered the mansion.

The inside looked untouched.

Dust covered the furniture.

Old paintings hung on the walls.

The air smelled like time.

Elena walked slowly.

Every step felt like walking through someone else’s memory.

Then she saw it.

A photograph.

On the wall.

A family photo.

Dominic.

A younger version of himself.

A woman.

And a little girl.

Her.

Elena stopped.

She reached out.

Her fingers touched the dusty frame.

“I remember this.”

Dominic stood beside her.

“You were five.”

She looked at the picture.

“My mother took this?”

“Yes.”

“She was happy.”

Dominic looked away.

“Yes.”

Elena noticed.

“You loved her.”

His answer was immediate.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

No pride.

No pretending.

Just truth.

“She was the only person who could make me forget who I was.”

Elena looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Dominic smiled sadly.

“It means your mother saw the man beneath everything.”

“The man beneath what?”

He looked around.

“The name.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone stopped.

Dominic immediately moved.

“Stay behind me.”

Elena almost argued.

Then stopped.

Because this time…

She understood.

Her father was not trying to control her.

He was trying to keep her alive.

They climbed the stairs.

Slowly.

Carefully.

A door at the end of the hallway opened.

And a woman appeared.

Elena stopped breathing.

She knew that face.

Not from memory.

From photographs.

From dreams.

From twenty years of wondering.

Her mother.

Isabella Romano.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably her.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Isabella whispered:

“Elena.”

That voice.

That voice broke something inside her.

Because it sounded exactly like the voice from her childhood.

The voice that sang to her.

The voice that told her bedtime stories.

The voice she thought she would never hear again.

Elena could not speak.

Isabella took one step forward.

Then stopped.

Like she was afraid.

Afraid her daughter would disappear.

“I’m sorry.”

Two words.

That was all.

But they carried twenty years.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why?”

Her voice shook.

“Why did you leave?”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“I didn’t leave.”

A pause.

“I was taken.”

The room became silent.

Dominic looked at her.

“Tell her everything.”

Isabella looked at him.

And Elena saw something.

Pain.

Between her parents.

There was a pain she never understood.

“I wanted to come back.”

Isabella looked at Elena.

“Every day.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because Victor made sure I couldn’t.”

The name.

Again.

Victor Hale.

The person who seemed to exist behind every disaster in her life.

Elena’s hands tightened.

“What did he do?”

Isabella took a breath.

“After you left with Dominic…”

Elena frowned.

“After I left?”

Isabella nodded.

“Your father wanted to keep you away from this world.”

She looked at Dominic.

“He thought sending you away would protect you.”

Dominic looked down.

“And Victor knew.”

“Yes.”

Isabella continued.

“He knew Elena was the only thing that could destroy Dominic’s control.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don’t understand.”

Isabella walked closer.

“Victor wanted something your father had.”

“The file.”

“Yes.”

“But why me?”

Isabella looked at her.

“Because the file was never with Dominic.”

Elena froze.

“What?”

Dominic remained silent.

Elena looked at him.

“Dad?”

Isabella answered.

“The file was created for you.”

The room went cold.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father knew one day…”

Isabella looked at Dominic.

“He might not be able to protect you.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Elena felt overwhelmed.

Her entire life…

Her entire identity…

Was connected to a secret she never knew existed.

Then suddenly…

The lights went out.

Everyone froze.

Again.

Not another coincidence.

Dominic immediately grabbed Elena’s arm.

“Down.”

A sound echoed.

Footsteps.

Multiple people.

Inside the mansion.

Isabella’s face changed.

“No.”

Dominic looked at her.

“What?”

Her voice trembled.

“He found us.”

Outside.

A black vehicle stopped.

Marcus Vale stepped out.

He adjusted his coat.

A man beside him asked:

“Are you sure?”

Marcus looked at the mansion.

“Yes.”

“Victor wants Elena alive.”

Marcus nodded.

“I know.”

“And Dominic?”

Marcus was silent.

Then:

“Victor wants him broken.”

The man looked confused.

“How?”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“By making him choose.”

Inside the mansion.

Dominic’s security team prepared.

But Elena noticed something.

Something wrong.

One of the guards moved differently.

Too slowly.

Too calmly.

She watched him.

Then whispered:

“Dad.”

Dominic turned.

“What?”

She pointed.

“That man.”

Dominic followed her eyes.

His expression changed.

Because the guard was not looking for enemies.

He was waiting.

Waiting for a signal.

Then his phone vibrated.

A tiny sound.

But enough.

Dominic moved instantly.

“Everyone down!”

The guard reached inside his jacket.

But before he could pull anything out…

Elena stepped forward.

The guard froze.

Because he recognized her.

And she recognized him.

“No…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

The man looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena stared.

“You?”

The man lowered his eyes.

“I never wanted you involved.”

Dominic’s face became cold.

“Who sent you?”

The man said nothing.

Then a voice came from the mansion speakers.

A voice they all recognized.

Victor Hale.

“Still protecting her, Dominic?”

Everyone froze.

Victor’s voice filled the room.

“You always had one weakness.”

A pause.

“Your daughter.”

Dominic stared into the darkness.

“Show yourself.”

Victor laughed.

“Not yet.”

Elena looked around.

“Where are you?”

The voice answered:

“Closer than you think.”

Then the final message appeared on every screen inside the mansion.

A live video.

Showing the mansion.

Showing everyone.

Including them.

And standing behind the camera…

Was someone Elena thought was impossible.

Someone who should not exist.

Someone who made her blood turn cold.

Because beside Victor Hale…

Stood Ryan Carter.

Alive.

May you like

Free.

And smiling.
