CHAPTER 12: THE MAN BEHIND ALL THE MONSTERS

CHAPTER 12: THE MAN BEHIND ALL THE MONSTERS
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes the most shocking truth is not a confession.
It is a person standing in front of you.
Alive.
Real.
Impossible.
Elena stared at the old man.
Her mind searched through memories.
Photographs.
Stories.
Names.
But nothing connected.
No face.
No voice.
No childhood memory.
Only one word kept repeating inside her head.
Grandfather.
The man smiled.
Not warmly.
Not like a grandfather seeing his granddaughter for the first time.
Like a man looking at something he had spent decades waiting to possess.
“Come closer, Elena.”
She did not move.
Dominic immediately stepped in front of her.
“No.”
The old man looked amused.
“Still protective after all these years.”
Dominic’s voice was cold.
“Arthur.”
The name echoed through the room.
Victor Hale looked like he had seen a ghost.
“You were supposed to be dead.”
Arthur Vale smiled.
“So were many people tonight.”
A pause.
“But here we are.”
Elena looked at Victor.
“You knew?”
Victor shook his head.
“No.”
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“I thought he was gone.”
Arthur laughed softly.
“That is because you believed what I wanted you to believe.”
Victor stared.
“You manipulated me.”
Arthur tilted his head.
“Of course.”
The answer was effortless.
Cold.
Simple.
Everyone became silent.
Because Victor Hale, the man who had controlled everyone else…
Had just become another victim.
Elena looked at Dominic.
“Who is he?”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“Arthur Vale was my father’s closest advisor.”
“A friend?”
“No.”
A pause.
“A strategist.”
Arthur smiled.
“Your father always loved simple words.”
Dominic ignored him.
“He helped build the Romano empire.”
Elena frowned.
“Then why hide?”
Dominic looked at Arthur.
“Because he wanted more than influence.”
Arthur tapped his cane against the floor.
“Influence is what weak people seek.”
A pause.
“Control is what intelligent people seek.”
Elena felt disgust.
This man sounded exactly like Victor.
Then she realized something.
Victor was not the beginning.
He was the result.
Arthur was the source.
“You created all of this?”
Elena asked.
Arthur looked at her.
“All of what?”
“My life falling apart.”
“My mother disappearing.”
“Ryan.”
“Madeline.”
“Victor.”
Her voice became sharper.
“All of it.”
Arthur smiled.
“Yes.”
The room froze.
The honesty was worse than a lie.
Elena stared.
“Why?”
Arthur walked slowly around the room.
“Because your family had something I needed.”
“The inheritance.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You.”
Elena felt a chill.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“You were born with access.”
“To the files.”
“To the accounts.”
“To everything.”
Arthur stopped.
“But that was only part of it.”
“What else?”
Arthur smiled.
“You were raised away from this world.”
Elena frowned.
“And?”
“And that made you valuable.”
She did not understand.
Arthur continued.
“Powerful families create powerful children.”
A pause.
“But powerful children are predictable.”
He looked at Dominic.
“You wanted to turn her into someone ordinary.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“Yes.”
Arthur smiled.
“And that was your greatest mistake.”
Ryan suddenly spoke.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at him.
Ryan stared at Arthur.
“You knew Elena before she met me.”
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“Then…”
A pause.
“Was I chosen?”
Arthur smiled.
Now Ryan understood.
The color drained from his face.
“You chose me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you were ambitious.”
Ryan clenched his fists.
“You knew I loved her.”
Arthur looked almost disappointed.
“No.”
A pause.
“I knew you loved what she represented.”
That sentence hit Ryan harder than any insult.
Because deep down…
He knew it was true.
Arthur continued:
“You wanted Elena because she gave you a doorway into a world you could never enter alone.”
Ryan looked away.
Elena watched him.
The man who broke her.
The man who betrayed her.
Suddenly she saw something terrifying.
Ryan was never the mastermind.
But he was never innocent.
He was a man who kept choosing himself.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Isabella stepped forward.
“Why did you take me?”
Arthur looked at her.
A strange sadness appeared.
“You were the only person who could convince Dominic to give up.”
Isabella’s expression hardened.
“You destroyed my life.”
“No.”
Arthur shook his head.
“I gave you a choice.”
“A choice?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“You could disappear.”
“Or Elena could become the target.”
Isabella’s eyes filled with pain.
“So you threatened my daughter.”
Arthur smiled.
“I motivated you.”
Dominic’s anger finally broke through.
“You ruined everything.”
Arthur looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“I revealed everything.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“You killed people.”
Arthur shrugged.
“People die every day.”
Elena looked at him.
“And you think that makes it acceptable?”
Arthur looked at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think it makes it necessary.”
Then Maria opened the old file again.
“There is something you don’t know.”
Everyone turned.
Arthur smiled.
“Maria.”
She looked at him.
“You always were the difficult one.”
Maria ignored him.
She looked at Elena.
“Your grandfather created the inheritance.”
A pause.
“But he also created a condition.”
Elena frowned.
“What condition?”
Maria looked at Dominic.
“He knew people would fight over power.”
She looked at Arthur.
“So he created one final rule.”
Arthur’s expression changed.
“What are you doing?”
Maria continued.
“The heir cannot inherit everything alone.”
Elena listened.
“What does that mean?”
“It means…”
Maria looked at her.
“You were never meant to control the empire.”
A pause.
“You were meant to destroy it.”
Silence.
Even Arthur stopped smiling.
Elena stared.
“Destroy it?”
Maria nodded.
“Your grandfather believed the family had become too powerful.”
She looked around the room.
“Too many secrets.”
“Too many enemies.”
“Too much damage.”
Elena looked at Dominic.
Her father looked away.
Maria continued:
“The final authority was not created to protect the Romano empire.”
A pause.
“It was created to end it.”
Arthur’s expression changed.
For the first time…
Real anger appeared.
“No.”
Maria looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“You think she can destroy decades of work?”
Maria answered:
“She is the only person who can.”
Arthur looked at Elena.
Then smiled again.
A dangerous smile.
“Then I suppose…”
A pause.
“I will have to convince her not to.”
The mansion suddenly shook.
A loud explosion came from outside.
Everyone reacted.
Dominic looked toward the windows.
“What did you do?”
Arthur calmly checked his watch.
“I invited some guests.”
Outside…
Multiple vehicles surrounded the mansion.
Not Victor’s men.
Not Dominic’s.
Someone else.
Arthur’s army.
Elena looked around.
They were trapped.
Arthur walked toward the door.
“You see, Elena…”
A pause.
“All your life, people have tried to protect you.”
He looked back.
“But protection creates weakness.”
He smiled.
“Tonight, I will teach you something your father never did.”
“What?”
Arthur opened the door.
“How to become powerful.”
As armed men entered the mansion…
A strange thing happened.
Ryan moved.
Not toward Arthur.
Not toward the exit.
Toward Elena.
Dominic noticed immediately.
“What are you doing?”
Ryan stopped.
For a moment, everyone expected betrayal.
Because that was what Ryan had always done.
Choose himself.
But this time…
He looked at Elena.
And said:
“I know you will never forgive me.”
Elena stared.
“But I need you to know something.”
A pause.
“The first time I met you…”
His voice cracked.
“I really did love you.”
Nobody spoke.
Ryan looked toward Arthur’s men.
“And I’m tired of being someone else’s weapon.”
Then he stepped in front of Elena.
Protecting her.
Not because he expected forgiveness.
Not because he wanted something.
But because for the first time…
He made a choice without thinking about himself.
Arthur watched.
Almost amused.
“How touching.”
He looked at Ryan.
“Do you really think one good decision changes who you are?”
Ryan answered quietly:
“No.”
A pause.
“But maybe one good decision is where it starts.”
Arthur smiled.
Then raised his hand.
The soldiers aimed their weapons.
Dominic moved beside Elena.
Isabella stood with them.
Maria held the file.
For twenty years…
The Romano family had been running from this moment.
Now they were finally standing together.
But Arthur had one final card.
He looked at Elena.
“You still don’t know the last secret.”
Elena stared.
“What secret?”
Arthur smiled.
“The reason your father truly sent you away.”
A pause.
“The reason your mother disappeared.”
Another pause.
“The reason Victor hated your family.”
He leaned closer.
“Your birth.”
Elena froze.
“What about it?”
May you like
Arthur whispered:
“You were never supposed to be born.”
