CHAPTER 11: THE SIN MY FATHER HID FOR TWENTY YEARS

CHAPTER 11: THE SIN MY FATHER HID FOR TWENTY YEARS

The room felt colder.

Not because of the storm outside.

Not because of the old mansion.

Because Elena was finally looking at the one person she believed would never betray her.

Her father.

Dominic Romano.

The man who came when everyone else abandoned her.

The man who carried her out of the darkness.

The man who promised her:

No more lies.

And now…

His name was sitting at the center of the secret that destroyed her family.

Elena stared at the screen.

The document remained open.

The evidence was there.

A signature.

A date.

A transaction.

Everything connected to Dominic Romano.

“Dad.”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

But everyone heard it.

“Tell me I’m misunderstanding this.”

Dominic did not answer.

That silence destroyed the last piece of hope she had.

Elena stepped backward.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“No, you don’t get to do that.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Do what?”

“Stand there silently.”

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Ryan did that.”

A pause.

“He stayed quiet when I needed answers.”

Another pause.

“Victor did that.”

She looked around the room.

“Everyone did that.”

Her voice cracked.

“I spent my entire life surrounded by people who decided I was too weak to know the truth.”

Dominic lowered his eyes.

“Elena…”

“No.”

She wiped away a tear.

“I want the truth.”

The room became completely silent.

Finally…

Dominic nodded.

“Okay.”

One word.

But it sounded like surrender.

“Twenty-five years ago…”

Dominic walked toward the window.

“Before you were born, before Victor became my enemy…”

He stopped.

“I made a choice.”

Elena watched him carefully.

“What choice?”

Dominic looked outside.

“A choice that saved my family.”

A pause.

“And destroyed another.”

Victor smiled slightly.

“There it is.”

Dominic ignored him.

“When I built my company, I made agreements.”

“Business agreements?”

“No.”

His voice became heavier.

“Political agreements.”

Elena frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I worked with people I should not have trusted.”

Maria looked down.

Because she already knew this story.

Dominic continued.

“One of those people was Richard Brooks.”

Elena froze.

“Madeline’s father?”

“Yes.”

The connection became clearer.

“The same man who helped Victor.”

Dominic nodded.

“Yes.”

Years ago.

Dominic Romano was younger.

Ambitious.

Powerful.

But not untouchable.

His company was growing quickly.

And with growth came enemies.

Richard Brooks approached him.

He offered protection.

Connections.

Influence.

A shortcut.

Dominic accepted.

At first, it worked.

Contracts appeared.

Doors opened.

Investors came.

But every favor had a price.

And Dominic eventually discovered the truth.

Richard Brooks was not helping him.

He was buying him.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Piece by piece.

Until Dominic realized he no longer controlled his own empire.

Victor discovered it too.

And he wanted out.

But leaving was not simple.

Because Richard Brooks had built a network.

A network that included politicians, businessmen, and criminals.

The same network now hidden inside the files.

“So what did you do?”

Elena asked.

Dominic turned around.

“I exposed them.”

Victor laughed.

“No.”

The room went silent.

Victor looked at Dominic.

“You exposed everyone except yourself.”

Elena looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Victor stepped forward.

“Your father wants to be the hero.”

Dominic’s eyes hardened.

“Do not listen to him.”

“Why?”

Victor smiled.

“Because he is telling you a half-truth.”

Elena looked at Dominic.

“Is he?”

A long silence.

Then Dominic said:

“Yes.”

That answer shocked everyone.

Even Victor.

Dominic continued:

“I exposed them.”

A pause.

“But I also made a deal.”

“With who?”

“Richard Brooks.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“What kind of deal?”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“One that protected my family.”

“And what did you give him?”

Silence.

Then:

“Access.”

Elena felt sick.

“Access to what?”

Dominic looked at her.

“To the Romano inheritance.”

The room froze.

“You traded our family?”

Elena whispered.

“No.”

Dominic immediately answered.

“I traded myself.”

She stared.

“I don’t understand.”

“The deal was supposed to end the war.”

A pause.

“Richard wanted control over my company.”

Dominic looked at the files.

“He wanted control over the information.”

“And you agreed?”

“Yes.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“So Victor was right.”

Dominic looked hurt.

“Not completely.”

“But enough.”

A silence.

Elena turned away.

She felt like she was falling again.

Not down stairs.

Not onto concrete.

Into another version of reality.

A reality where every person she loved had a secret.

Ryan watched silently.

For once, he did not interrupt.

Because he understood.

He was looking at the consequence of the same mistake he made.

The belief that controlling information was the same as protecting people.

He finally spoke.

“Dominic.”

Everyone looked at him.

Ryan swallowed.

“Did Elena know?”

Dominic looked at him.

“No.”

“Did Isabella know?”

Dominic looked toward Elena’s mother.

“Yes.”

Elena turned.

“You knew?”

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“Mom…”

“I hated him for it.”

She looked at Dominic.

“But I understood why he did it.”

Elena stared.

“You both knew.”

Her voice became quieter.

“You both knew my whole life was built around this.”

Isabella stepped closer.

“We were trying to protect you.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“You were protecting yourselves from watching me suffer.”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could.

Then Maria spoke.

“The file is incomplete.”

Everyone looked at her.

Elena frowned.

“What?”

Maria pointed at the screen.

“The document your father signed.”

She looked at Dominic.

“It was not the final agreement.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“What?”

Maria nodded.

“Someone changed it later.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“What are you saying?”

Maria looked directly at him.

“I’m saying the person who betrayed Dominic was not Richard Brooks.”

A pause.

“Not Victor.”

A pause.

“Someone else.”

Dominic moved closer.

“Impossible.”

Maria shook her head.

“No.”

She touched the document.

“Look at the signature.”

Everyone stared.

Elena zoomed in.

The signature at the bottom.

The one approving the transfer.

It was not Dominic’s.

Not Richard’s.

Not Victor’s.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone nobody expected.

Ryan’s face went pale.

Because he recognized the name.

“No…”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

Ryan stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.”

“Who?”

He looked at the screen.

Then whispered:

“The person who introduced Victor to your family.”

A pause.

“The person who started everything.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“Say the name.”

Ryan swallowed.

Then said:

“Arthur Vale.”

Silence.

Elena frowned.

“Who is Arthur Vale?”

Nobody answered.

Until Victor did.

And for the first time…

There was fear in his voice.

“My father.”

The room froze.

Victor Hale’s father.

The man who supposedly died years ago.

The man whose name had never appeared.

The man behind the man.

Elena looked at Victor.

“You mean…”

Victor’s face became dark.

“I thought he was dead.”

A pause.

“But apparently…”

He looked toward the mansion entrance.

“He has been alive all this time.”

Then everyone heard it.

A slow sound.

Footsteps.

Coming from the hallway.

Not rushed.

Not hidden.

Someone walking like they owned the place.

The library doors opened.

An elderly man stood there.

Silver hair.

Elegant suit.

A cane in his hand.

Everyone froze.

Victor whispered:

“No.”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Victor.”

A pause.

“Hello, Dominic.”

Then his eyes moved toward Elena.

“And hello…”

The smile became colder.

“To my granddaughter.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“Granddaughter?”

The old man smiled.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You finally found the truth.”

He looked at the necklace around her neck.

May you like

“The question is…”

“Will you survive it?”
