CHAPTER 4: THE ENEMY MY FATHER COULDN’T BURY

CHAPTER 4: THE ENEMY MY FATHER COULDN’T BURY
The name hung in the hospital room like a ghost.
Victor Hale.
Elena had not heard that name in twenty years.
But the moment it left her mouth, she knew something had changed.
Her father.
The man who seemed impossible to frighten.
The man who walked into Ryan Carter’s mansion as if he owned the world.
Had become silent.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Silent.
And that terrified Elena more than anything.
“Who is he?”
Dominic stared at the photograph.
His fingers tightened slightly around the edge.
A tiny movement.
Most people would never notice.
But Elena did.
Because she had spent her childhood studying her father.
She knew every expression he tried to hide.
And this one was fear.
Not for himself.
For her.
“Dad.”
Dominic looked up.
“Where did you get this?”
“It was inside Ryan’s house.”
“Where?”
“A hidden drawer.”
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“Ryan kept this?”
“Yes.”
A long silence followed.
Then Dominic stood.
“Get some rest.”
Elena frowned.
“That’s your answer?”
“It is for tonight.”
“No.”
Her voice became stronger.
“I’m done being protected by silence.”
That stopped him.
For twenty years, Elena had been angry because she believed Dominic hid everything from her.
And now she realized…
He was doing it again.
She pushed herself slightly upward despite the pain.
“Tell me the truth.”
Dominic looked at her.
“Elena.”
“No.”
Her eyes met his.
“I lost my husband because I trusted a lie.”
A pause.
“I lost twenty years with you because I believed another one.”
Those words hurt.
She saw it.
For the first time, Dominic looked like a father instead of a powerful man.
“Please.”
The word was quiet.
Not a demand.
A request.
Dominic sat down again.
And for the first time in twenty years…
He told her everything.
“Victor Hale was my closest friend.”
Elena blinked.
“Friend?”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
Dominic nodded.
“I know.”
He looked toward the window.
“When I was younger, before you were born, Victor and I built everything together.”
“Your business?”
“Yes.”
“Then what happened?”
Dominic’s expression darkened.
“Power.”
A simple word.
But it carried years of damage.
“Victor believed fear was the fastest way to control people.”
“And you didn’t?”
Dominic looked at her.
“I did.”
Elena was surprised.
Her father continued.
“I was not always the man you see now.”
A pause.
“I made choices I regret.”
The admission shocked her.
Dominic Romano admitting regret.
The man who never apologized.
The man who never showed weakness.
“I thought I could control the darkness.”
He looked down.
“But eventually, the darkness starts controlling you.”
Elena listened silently.
“Victor wanted more.”
“How much more?”
“Everything.”
Dominic’s voice became colder.
“He wanted politicians. Companies. Judges. Entire cities.”
“And you stopped him?”
“I tried.”
A pause.
“And that was when he decided to destroy me.”
Elena looked at the photograph.
“But he failed.”
Dominic shook his head.
“No.”
Her expression changed.
“What?”
“He succeeded.”
Silence.
“He destroyed the one thing I cared about.”
Elena understood.
“You mean…”
“You.”
Twenty years earlier.
Elena was eighteen.
Young.
Angry.
Confused.
She remembered the night she left.
She remembered screaming at Dominic.
“You care more about your enemies than your own daughter!”
She remembered throwing her suitcase into the car.
She remembered him standing there.
Not stopping her.
Not fighting back.
She thought he didn't care.
But now…
She understood.
He let her leave because he was afraid.
Not because he didn't love her.
“Victor knew about you,” Dominic said.
Elena froze.
“What?”
“He knew you were my weakness.”
A chill moved through her.
“He threatened me.”
“What did he say?”
Dominic looked away.
“He said if I continued fighting him, you would pay the price.”
Elena felt her heart sink.
“So you pushed me away.”
“Yes.”
“You made me hate you.”
“Yes.”
“Because you thought hatred would protect me.”
Dominic nodded.
“I thought if you hated me enough…”
His voice broke slightly.
“You would never come back.”
The room became silent.
Elena looked at her father.
The man she spent twenty years blaming.
And suddenly she saw something different.
A lonely man.
A man who sacrificed being loved because he believed it kept his daughter alive.
But one question remained.
“Why Ryan?”
Dominic looked at her.
“What?”
“Why did Victor involve Ryan?”
He became serious again.
“Because Ryan was never powerful enough to destroy you alone.”
Elena looked at the documents.
“The affair.”
“The divorce plan.”
“The fake evidence.”
“All of it.”
Dominic nodded.
“Ryan was the weapon.”
“And Victor was the person holding it.”
Meanwhile…
Ryan Carter sat in a dark office.
The lights were off.
He had not moved for hours.
Because the truth was becoming impossible to ignore.
He had never been the mastermind.
He had always believed he was.
But now he realized something worse.
He was disposable.
A pawn.
The phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“You.”
Victor Hale’s voice came through.
“You sound disappointed.”
Ryan clenched his jaw.
“You used me.”
A quiet laugh.
“No.”
“I trusted you.”
“That was your mistake.”
Ryan stood.
“You promised me Elena would disappear.”
“She will.”
“You said Romano would never come back.”
Victor paused.
“He did.”
Ryan's breathing became heavier.
“What happens now?”
Victor answered calmly.
“Now?”
A pause.
“Now you prove you are useful.”
Ryan frowned.
“How?”
“You still have access to Elena.”
Ryan froze.
“No.”
“You still know her weaknesses.”
“I won’t hurt her.”
Silence.
Then Victor laughed.
Not loudly.
Almost sadly.
“Ryan.”
His voice turned cold.
“You already did.”
The call ended.
The next morning.
Elena woke up to find her father sitting beside the window.
He had not slept.
She noticed.
“You stayed all night.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Dominic looked at her.
“Because twenty years ago, I let you leave alone.”
A pause.
“I will not make that mistake again.”
Those words almost broke her.
But before she could answer…
The hospital alarm sounded.
Doctors rushed past the hallway.
A nurse entered.
“Ms. Carter?”
Elena looked up.
“Yes?”
“There is someone here to see you.”
Dominic immediately stood.
“Who?”
The nurse hesitated.
“He says he is your husband.”
Elena’s expression changed.
Ryan.
Dominic stepped forward.
“No.”
But Elena stopped him.
“Wait.”
Her father looked at her.
“Why?”
Because deep inside…
She needed answers.
Not from the man she loved.
From the man who betrayed her.
“Let him come.”
Dominic studied her face.
Then nodded.
“Fine.”
But his voice became low.
“He gets one chance.”
The door opened.
Ryan Carter entered.
He looked exhausted.
Different.
Less confident.
For the first time, he looked like a man who had lost control.
“Elena…”
She stared at him.
The same voice.
The same face.
The same man.
But no longer the same person.
“What do you want?”
Ryan looked at Dominic.
Then back at her.
“I need to tell you the truth.”
Elena almost laughed.
“The truth?”
A pause.
“Now you care about the truth?”
Ryan swallowed.
“No.”
His eyes became darker.
“I care because if I don’t tell you…”
He looked terrified.
“Victor Hale will kill us all.”
The room went completely still.
Dominic stepped forward.
“You know Victor?”
Ryan looked at him.
And for the first time…
Ryan Carter looked afraid of someone else.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I work for him.”
Elena’s heart sank.
But Ryan continued.
“And Elena…”
His voice cracked.
“I was never the person controlling this.”
Dominic stared.
“Then who was?”
Ryan looked directly at Elena.
“The person who destroyed your family twenty years ago.”
A pause.
“Your father’s greatest enemy.”
Victor Hale.
But before anyone could respond…
The hospital lights suddenly went out.
Darkness filled the room.
May you like
Then a single sound echoed.
A gunshot.
