CHAPTER 13: THE TRUTH ABOUT ELENA’S BIRTH

CHAPTER 13: THE TRUTH ABOUT ELENA’S BIRTH

The words remained in the air.

“You were never supposed to be born.”

Elena stared at Arthur Vale.

For a moment, she thought she had misunderstood.

The entire mansion disappeared.

The armed men.

The weapons.

The enemies.

Everything.

There was only one sentence.

One sentence that reached deeper than any betrayal.

Deeper than Ryan.

Deeper than Victor.

Deeper than twenty years of lies.

“What did you say?”

Her voice was barely audible.

Arthur looked at her with the calm expression of a man revealing a carefully prepared secret.

“I said your existence was an accident.”

Dominic moved forward immediately.

“Enough.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Still trying to protect her?”

Dominic’s voice became dangerous.

“Do not speak about my daughter.”

Arthur smiled.

“Your daughter.”

A pause.

“That is exactly the problem.”

Elena looked at Dominic.

“Dad?”

She needed him to deny it.

She needed him to say Arthur was lying.

But Dominic’s silence was crushing.

Again.

Another silence.

Another secret.

Her hands trembled.

“Why aren’t you saying anything?”

Dominic looked at her.

Because for the first time in his life…

He did not know how to protect her from the truth.

Arthur walked toward the center of the room.

“You all think this story began with money.”

He looked at Victor.

“Or revenge.”

He looked at Dominic.

“Or betrayal.”

Then he looked at Elena.

“But it began before any of that.”

A pause.

“It began with fear.”

Elena stared.

“Fear of what?”

Arthur smiled.

“Your birth.”

Twenty-seven years earlier.

Dominic Romano was not yet the man everyone feared.

He was ambitious.

Young.

Building his empire.

But he was also desperate.

His family had enemies.

His company was vulnerable.

And every person around him wanted something.

Money.

Power.

Control.

Then he met Isabella.

She was different.

She did not care about his name.

His influence.

His reputation.

She saw the person beneath everything.

And Dominic loved her.

But love created a weakness.

At least, that was what Arthur believed.

Because Arthur had always believed love was a vulnerability.

Not a strength.

When Isabella became pregnant, Dominic wanted to leave everything behind.

The empire.

The politics.

The dangerous world.

He wanted a normal family.

But Arthur saw something else.

An opportunity.

Because an heir meant a future.

And a future meant control.

Back in the mansion.

Elena listened silently.

Arthur continued.

“Your grandfather created the Romano inheritance before you were born.”

Maria watched him carefully.

“But he also created a prediction.”

Elena frowned.

“A prediction?”

“Yes.”

Arthur looked at the necklace.

“A person would be born who could either save the family…”

A pause.

“Or destroy everything.”

Elena felt a chill.

“And you thought that person was me.”

Arthur nodded.

“Everyone did.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“That was superstition.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Was it?”

A silence.

Because everyone knew the answer.

Something about Elena had always been different.

Not because of power.

Not because of wealth.

Because she refused to become like them.

“You wanted to kill me.”

Elena said it quietly.

Arthur looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“I wanted to control you.”

The honesty was horrifying.

“Before you were born, I convinced people that your existence was dangerous.”

He looked at Dominic.

“I convinced your father.”

Elena turned.

“Dad?”

Dominic looked away.

Her heart sank.

“You believed him?”

Dominic’s voice was broken.

“I was afraid.”

The answer shocked her.

Not because he admitted it.

Because she heard the pain.

“I had already lost people.”

A pause.

“I thought if I removed you from this world…”

Elena whispered:

“You mean if you removed yourself from my life.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“Elena.”

Her voice trembled.

“Your father did not abandon you because he didn't love you.”

A pause.

“He abandoned you because he loved you too much.”

Elena looked at her.

“That doesn’t make it right.”

“No.”

Isabella nodded.

“It doesn’t.”

The agreement surprised Elena.

Her mother continued:

“We both made mistakes.”

She looked at Dominic.

“We thought controlling your life would protect you.”

A pause.

“But we forgot something.”

“What?”

Isabella looked at Elena.

“You were never weak.”

Victor laughed quietly.

Everyone turned.

“You are all pretending this is some beautiful family tragedy.”

He looked at Dominic.

“But you still haven’t told her the worst part.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“The night Elena was born.”

The room went silent.

Arthur looked irritated.

“Victor.”

But Victor continued.

“No.”

He looked at Elena.

“She deserves to know.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Victor ignored him.

“Your father had a choice.”

Elena looked at Dominic.

“What choice?”

Victor answered:

“Between saving your mother…”

A pause.

“Or saving you.”

The room froze.

Elena felt numb.

“What?”

Victor smiled.

“And he chose you.”

The memory returned.

Dominic.

Twenty-seven years ago.

A hospital room.

Isabella in danger.

Doctors rushing.

Two lives at risk.

The doctors said they could only save one.

The baby.

Or the mother.

Dominic had to choose.

And he chose Elena.

Isabella survived.

But the decision changed everything.

Because Arthur used it.

He told Dominic:

“You created a weakness.”

He told Isabella:

“He chose the child over you.”

He created resentment.

Fear.

Distance.

And eventually…

A family that broke apart.

Elena looked at her parents.

“You both knew?”

Isabella cried silently.

“Yes.”

Dominic whispered:

“Yes.”

Elena stepped back.

The pain was overwhelming.

Not because they chose her.

But because they spent years hiding the reason.

“You let me believe I was abandoned.”

Dominic looked destroyed.

“I know.”

“You let me hate you.”

“I know.”

“You let me think nobody wanted me.”

His voice broke.

“I know.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Elena said something that hurt more than anger.

“I spent twenty years grieving people who were alive.”

Dominic looked down.

Because there was no defense against that.

Arthur watched quietly.

He thought he had won.

He thought breaking the family emotionally was enough.

But he misunderstood something.

Something everyone misunderstood about Elena.

Pain did not make her weak.

It made her clear.

She wiped her tears.

Then looked at Arthur.

“You’re wrong.”

Arthur frowned.

“About what?”

“You think my family’s weakness is love.”

A pause.

“But you’re wrong.”

She looked at Dominic.

“At least they loved someone.”

Then at Victor.

“You used people.”

Then at Arthur.

“You destroyed people.”

Her eyes hardened.

“And you still think you won.”

Arthur smiled.

“You are angry.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

A pause.

“Anger makes people predictable.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at the necklace.

“Anger makes people honest.”

She removed the necklace.

Everyone reacted.

Arthur’s expression changed.

“Don’t.”

Elena looked at him.

“Why?”

For the first time…

Arthur sounded nervous.

“Because you don’t know what you’re opening.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“No.”

A pause.

“I finally do.”

She pressed the hidden mechanism.

The necklace opened.

Inside was not a chip.

Not a code.

Not a key.

A tiny photograph.

A photograph of a newborn baby.

On the back was a message.

Elena read it.

And her face changed.

“What is it?”

Dominic asked.

She looked up.

Her voice shaking.

“It’s not a message from my grandfather.”

A pause.

“It’s from someone else.”

“Who?”

Elena turned the photograph around.

Everyone saw the name.

A name nobody expected.

A name that changed everything.

ISABELLA ROMANO.

Her mother.

But the date…

The date was impossible.

Because it was written:

Three years before Elena was born.

Nobody understood.

Until Maria whispered:

“No…”

Arthur stepped forward.

For the first time…

Real fear appeared on his face.

Because the secret inside the necklace was not about Elena.

It was about Isabella.

A truth that could destroy everything Arthur built.

Elena stared at her mother.

“Mom…”

Isabella looked terrified.

Because she knew.

The past she buried for twenty-seven years…

Had finally returned.

May you like

And this time…

It would not stay buried.
