CHAPTER 2: THE FATHER WHO NEVER FORGAVE

CHAPTER 2: THE FATHER WHO NEVER FORGAVE
The front door of the Carter mansion opened.
Not violently.
Not dramatically.
Just slowly.
That was what frightened Ryan Carter the most.
Because angry people made noise.
They shouted.
They threatened.
They destroyed things.
But the most dangerous people in the world were the ones who walked into a room quietly.
The ones who already knew exactly what they were going to do.
Ryan stood in the living room, a glass of whiskey in his hand.
He had changed his shirt.
Washed his hands.
Fixed his hair.
He had even cleaned the small blood stain on his sleeve.
Because that was what Ryan Carter did.
He controlled appearances.
He built a life around convincing people that everything was perfect.
The successful businessman.
The loving husband.
The brilliant developer.
Nobody saw what happened behind closed doors.
Nobody saw the anger.
The manipulation.
The coldness.
Until tonight.
Madeline sat on the sofa, wrapped in Elena’s silk robe.
She looked nervous.
“You said nobody would find out.”
Ryan did not answer immediately.
He looked out at the dark driveway.
“I said nobody would believe her.”
Madeline frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Ryan took a sip of whiskey.
“It means Elena has always been emotional.”
“She has a broken leg.”
His jaw tightened.
“She attacked you.”
Madeline looked away.
For the first time that night, she seemed uncomfortable.
“I didn’t expect you to push her.”
Ryan’s eyes moved toward her.
The room became colder.
“You’re blaming me?”
Madeline immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“Because remember something.”
He stepped closer.
“You wanted this.”
She swallowed.
“I wanted you.”
Ryan smiled.
A small smile.
The kind that made Elena fall in love with him years ago.
But now…
It looked empty.
“You will have me.”
Madeline looked at him.
“How can you be sure?”
Ryan walked toward the bar.
“Because after tonight, Elena is finished.”
Outside.
Dominic Romano stood in the hallway.
His men had already secured the house.
No one knew they were there.
No alarms.
No struggle.
Just complete control.
One of his men approached.
“Basement is located.”
Dominic nodded.
“Open it.”
The man hesitated.
“Sir.”
Dominic looked at him.
“What?”
“There is something you should know.”
“What?”
“The basement door was locked from the outside.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Dominic looked at the door.
A locked basement.
His daughter trapped inside.
The woman who had spent twenty years refusing his help.
The woman who thought she was stronger alone.
His expression did not change.
But everyone around him felt it.
Something had shifted.
“Open it.”
The lock was broken within seconds.
The door slowly moved.
Cold air escaped.
“Elena?”
Dominic stepped inside.
At first, he saw only darkness.
Then…
A small movement.
A broken voice.
“Dad?”
That single word stopped him.
Twenty years.
Twenty years since he heard her call him that.
Not Dominic.
Not his name.
Dad.
He walked faster.
But he forced himself to stay calm.
Because Elena needed him calm.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Calm.
He reached her.
And for the first time in twenty years…
Dominic Romano touched his daughter’s face.
Not as a powerful man.
Not as someone feared.
Just as a father.
“Oh, Elena…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know who else to call.”
That sentence hurt him more than anything.
Because she should have called him.
She should have known.
He looked at her broken leg.
His hands tightened.
“Who did this?”
She looked away.
“Ryan.”
The name.
Only the name.
But Dominic remembered it.
Every person in his world knew one rule.
Never hurt Dominic Romano’s family.
And Ryan Carter had not just broken that rule.
He had destroyed it.
“Can you move?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She looked confused.
“Why does everyone keep saying that?”
For the first time that night, a tiny emotion crossed Dominic’s face.
Almost a smile.
“Because you are still stubborn enough to joke.”
Elena looked at him.
“You’re different.”
“Yes.”
“You changed.”
Dominic looked down.
“No.”
A pause.
“I stopped pretending.”
Ten minutes later.
Elena was carefully lifted onto a medical stretcher.
A private emergency team entered.
Professional.
Silent.
Fast.
Ryan heard the noise upstairs.
He walked out of the living room.
“What is happening?”
Nobody answered.
His expression changed.
Then he saw him.
The older man walking down the hallway.
Dominic Romano.
Ryan froze.
Because he knew that name.
Everyone in the business world knew.
Not from newspapers.
Not from interviews.
But from whispers.
The man who saved companies.
The man who destroyed enemies.
The man who disappeared twenty years ago.
Ryan stared.
“Who are you?”
Dominic stopped.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Elena was brought past them.
Ryan saw her.
Alive.
Awake.
And beside her…
Her father.
His face lost color.
“No.”
Madeline came behind him.
“What?”
Ryan whispered:
“Romano.”
Madeline looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Ryan looked at her.
“You don't know?”
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“Elena’s father.”
Madeline laughed nervously.
“So?”
Ryan looked at Dominic.
And for the first time that night…
He looked afraid.
“He’s not just her father.”
Dominic walked closer.
Ryan tried to recover.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Dominic stopped.
“A misunderstanding?”
Ryan nodded quickly.
“Yes.”
He pointed toward Elena.
“She attacked Madeline.”
Dominic looked at his daughter.
Then back at Ryan.
“You broke her leg.”
Ryan swallowed.
“She fell.”
A silence.
A terrible silence.
Dominic reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording.
Ryan’s face changed.
One of Dominic’s men pressed play.
Ryan’s own voice filled the hallway.
“No food.”
“No water.”
“Maybe after a few hours, you’ll learn to control yourself.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Ryan stared.
“How…”
Dominic interrupted.
“You made one mistake.”
Ryan said nothing.
“You believed Elena was alone.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“You forgot she had a father.”
Ryan tried to remain calm.
“Mr. Romano, whatever happened between husband and wife—”
“Do not.”
Dominic’s voice cut through the room.
Everyone became silent.
“Do not stand in front of me and call this a marriage.”
Ryan stopped.
Dominic continued.
“A marriage protects.”
His eyes hardened.
“What you did was cruelty.”
Madeline stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.”
Dominic looked at her.
She immediately stopped.
“I understand everything.”
He looked at the silk robe she was wearing.
Elena noticed.
Dominic noticed too.
“You were wearing my daughter’s clothes.”
Madeline’s face changed.
“It was just a robe.”
Dominic nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“That is exactly how people like you think.”
Ryan clenched his fists.
“You cannot threaten me.”
Dominic looked at him.
“I haven’t threatened you.”
A small pause.
“I came here to tell you something.”
Ryan stared.
“What?”
Dominic leaned slightly closer.
“Your entire life is built on lies.”
Ryan laughed.
“You think you can destroy me?”
Dominic looked around the mansion.
The expensive paintings.
The luxury furniture.
The symbols of Ryan’s success.
Then he looked back.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think I can reveal you.”
At that moment, one of Dominic’s men entered.
“Sir.”
Dominic turned.
“Yes?”
“We found the documents.”
Ryan’s face changed.
“What documents?”
The man placed a folder on the table.
Dominic opened it.
Inside were contracts.
Bank transfers.
Emails.
Evidence.
Everything Ryan thought was hidden.
Dominic looked at him.
“Your company.”
Ryan became pale.
“What about it?”
Dominic closed the folder.
“Your biggest investor withdrew three hours ago.”
Ryan froze.
“What?”
“And your development permit…”
Dominic looked at Madeline.
“Was never approved.”
Madeline’s expression changed.
“What?”
Dominic smiled slightly.
“The Brooks family has been lying to you too.”
Ryan looked between them.
Impossible.
The perfect plan.
The perfect future.
Everything collapsed in seconds.
Dominic turned toward Elena.
“Take my daughter home.”
Ryan watched her being carried away.
And for the first time…
He understood.
The woman he thought he destroyed…
Was the only reason he was still alive.
Because if Dominic Romano truly wanted revenge…
Tonight would have ended very differently.
But Dominic was not finished.
Not even close.
Because before leaving, he stopped beside Ryan.
And whispered:
“You hurt my daughter.”
Ryan looked up.
Dominic’s voice was almost gentle.
“That was your first mistake.”
A pause.
“Your second mistake was thinking I would forgive you.”
Then he walked away.
Leaving Ryan Carter standing in the ruins of his perfect world.
And somewhere outside…
Elena Carter looked at the night sky.
For twenty years, she believed her father was the monster.
Now she wondered…
What kind of monster would protect her?
May you like
And what kind of man was her husband…
To make her need one?
