CHAPTER 4: THE MAN BEHIND RICHARD'S PLAN

Richard Hale had always believed he was the smartest person in the room.

That belief had carried him through years of deception.

He lied to Amelia.

He manipulated investors.

He convinced friends and family that he was a devoted husband.

He built an entire identity out of carefully chosen words and perfectly timed emotions.

But now...

Standing in front of Amelia, watching her hold a photograph of Victor Blackwood, Richard realized something terrifying.

She had been watching him.

Just like he had been watching her.

The difference was...

She was better at it.

“Where did you get that?”

Richard’s voice was low.

Almost a whisper.

Amelia noticed.

That small crack in his confidence.

The first sign that he was no longer in control.

She placed the photograph on the table.

“You should be asking yourself a different question.”

Richard stared at her.

“What?”

“How long did you think you could hide him from me?”

The room became silent.

Richard looked toward the windows.

The city lights reflected against the glass.

A beautiful view.

A view that once represented his future.

Now it looked like the last view of a collapsing empire.

“You don’t understand.”

Amelia laughed quietly.

A cold laugh.

“That’s the same thing you always say when someone discovers the truth.”

Richard’s face tightened.

“You think you know everything.”

“No.”

Amelia stepped closer.

“I know enough.”

Victor Blackwood.

A name Richard never wanted connected to Amelia.

Because Victor wasn’t just a consultant.

He was the person who taught Richard how to hide.

Years ago, Richard had been nobody.

A man with ambition but no power.

No inheritance.

No family empire.

No influence.

Then he met Amelia.

And everything changed.

But Richard quickly learned something.

Being married to a billionaire was not enough.

He needed control.

And Victor was the person who showed him how.

How wealthy families protected their assets.

How legal loopholes worked.

How scandals disappeared.

How people disappeared.

Richard convinced himself he was only preparing.

Planning.

Protecting his future.

Until preparation became obsession.

And obsession became murder.

“Tell me something,” Amelia said.

Richard looked at her.

“When did you meet Victor?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Amelia nodded.

“Exactly.”

She opened another file.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Meeting records.

“Your mistake was thinking I only investigated you.”

Richard looked through the papers.

His expression slowly changed.

“I investigated everyone around you.”

Amelia continued.

“Your lawyer.”

“Your financial adviser.”

“Your business partners.”

“And Victor.”

Richard threw the folder onto the table.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

Amelia smiled.

“That’s interesting.”

“What?”

“Because that’s exactly what Victor told you about me.”

Richard froze.

A few days earlier...

Before the helicopter.

Before the fall.

Before the world believed Amelia Whitmore was dead.

She had already started building her counterattack.

The night before the trip, Amelia met with Sarah in a hidden office beneath Whitmore Tower.

Sarah placed a small device on the table.

“What is it?”

“A backup.”

Amelia looked confused.

“For what?”

“For the possibility that Richard is exactly who you think he is.”

Amelia stared at the device.

A small black recorder.

“You knew?”

Sarah sighed.

“I suspected.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because suspicion destroys relationships.”

Sarah looked at her.

“But evidence destroys enemies.”

That sentence stayed with Amelia.

So she made a decision.

She would not confront Richard.

She would not accuse him.

She would let him believe he had won.

Because arrogant people make mistakes.

And Richard was about to make the biggest mistake of his life.

Back in the mansion, Richard paced nervously.

“How much does Victor know?”

Amelia didn’t answer.

That worried him more than anything.

Because if Amelia knew about Victor...

She probably knew about everything.

The insurance policy.

The meetings.

The financial transfers.

The backup plan.

All of it.

“You’re enjoying this,” Richard said.

Amelia looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice became softer.

“I’m remembering.”

“Remembering what?”

“The woman I was before you.”

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Amelia looked around the mansion.

The expensive furniture.

The paintings.

The luxury.

“This house.”

She pointed.

“You thought I gave you this life.”

Richard said nothing.

“But my father taught me something.”

“What?”

“Never give someone power they haven’t earned.”

She stepped closer.

“Because eventually, they forget it was borrowed.”

Suddenly, Richard’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Both of them looked at it.

Richard hesitated.

Amelia smiled.

“Answer it.”

He stared at her.

“You already know who it is.”

Richard slowly picked up the phone.

“Victor.”

No greeting.

No explanation.

Only one sentence.

“We have a problem.”

Richard looked at Amelia.

“What problem?”

Victor’s voice was tense.

“She knows.”

Richard’s grip tightened.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

A pause.

“But she knows everything.”

Richard looked at Amelia.

She was standing there calmly.

Almost peacefully.

Victor continued.

“And Richard…”

“What?”

“Do not go after her.”

Richard frowned.

“Why?”

Because for the first time, Victor sounded afraid.

“Because Amelia isn’t trying to prove you’re guilty.”

Silence.

“She’s trying to destroy you.”

The call ended.

Richard stared at Amelia.

“You’re not going to the police.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was an observation.

Amelia said nothing.

“Why?”

Still nothing.

Richard stepped closer.

“Why haven’t you arrested me?”

Finally, Amelia answered.

“Because prison is too easy.”

Richard felt a chill.

“What?”

“You think losing your freedom is punishment?”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“No.”

She picked up the folder.

“Your punishment is watching everything you wanted disappear.”

Richard’s face darkened.

“You think you’ve won?”

Amelia smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I think you’re about to discover that you never understood the game.”

The next morning, Richard woke up to a nightmare.

Not a dream.

Reality.

His bank accounts were frozen.

Three major investors withdrew.

The board requested an emergency meeting.

His personal assistant resigned.

And then came the final message.

From Whitmore Dynamics.

A public announcement.

Richard opened it.

His hands trembled.

The headline appeared:

"Amelia Whitmore Returns as CEO After Attempted Assassination."

Below it was another statement.

Short.

Simple.

Deadly.

"The person responsible will be revealed soon."

Richard stared at the screen.

Because Amelia had not just survived.

She had returned stronger than ever.

But then he noticed something else.

A name appeared in the announcement.

A name he had never seen before.

Someone Amelia had appointed as head of security.

Someone who would lead the investigation.

Richard zoomed in.

And his heart stopped.

Because the person standing beside Amelia in the official photograph...

Was someone Richard believed had died ten years ago.

Someone who knew the truth about his past.

Someone who could destroy him completely.

Richard whispered:

“No…”

The photograph showed a man smiling beside Amelia.

And beneath it was a name:

Alexander Whitmore.

Amelia’s father.

The billionaire who supposedly died years ago.

The man who was supposed to be buried.

The man who should have been impossible.

Richard stepped backward.

Because suddenly he understood.

The helicopter attack was not the beginning of Amelia’s revenge.

It was the beginning of a plan created long before he ever met her.

And the dead...

May you like

Had just returned.
