CHAPTER 3: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MASK

Richard Hale spent the entire night staring at the same photograph.

The image was impossible.

Impossible because it showed something that should never have existed.

Proof.

Proof that he had pushed Amelia.

Proof that his perfect plan had failed.

Proof that someone had been watching.

Someone had known.

The photograph sat on his phone screen like a silent accusation.

Richard zoomed in.

The helicopter door.

His hand.

Amelia’s body falling.

Every detail was clear.

Too clear.

His first thought was panic.

His second thought was survival.

And his third thought...

Who betrayed me?

At 6:00 a.m., Richard was no longer the confident husband who believed he had won.

He was a man surrounded by enemies he couldn’t see.

His mansion, once a symbol of luxury, now felt like a prison.

Every camera.

Every window.

Every shadow.

He trusted nothing.

He picked up his phone and called Victor Blackwood again.

The call connected immediately.

“You saw the news,” Richard said.

Victor didn’t answer.

That worried him more.

“Victor.”

“I saw.”

“Then fix this.”

A long silence followed.

Finally, Victor spoke.

“There is no fixing this.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“What did you say?”

“You wanted a perfect crime.”

Victor’s voice was emotionless.

“But perfect crimes don’t exist.”

Richard walked toward the window.

“You helped me.”

“I helped you understand possibilities.”

“No.”

Richard’s voice became darker.

“You helped me build this.”

Victor sighed.

“And now Amelia is rebuilding something bigger.”

Richard froze.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you underestimated her.”

Across the city, Amelia Whitmore sat inside a private conference room.

For the first time in weeks, she was surrounded by people who weren’t pretending.

Her closest executives.

Her legal team.

Her security advisers.

And Sarah Whitmore.

Everyone looked at her differently now.

Not with sympathy.

With respect.

Because they had seen what happened.

A woman who should have been broken had returned stronger.

The media called her a survivor.

They were wrong.

Survivors run away from danger.

Amelia was walking toward it.

“Give me the latest report,” she said.

A lawyer placed a tablet in front of her.

“Richard’s accounts are frozen temporarily.”

“Good.”

“Several investors are demanding explanations.”

“Expected.”

“The board is divided.”

Amelia nodded.

“Also expected.”

Sarah watched her carefully.

“You’re not angry.”

Amelia looked up.

“I am.”

“Then why are you so calm?”

Amelia looked through the glass window at the city below.

Because she had learned something after the fall.

Anger was loud.

Revenge was patient.

“I spent years loving him,” she said.

“And that was my weakness.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No. Loving someone wasn’t your weakness.”

Amelia looked at her.

“Trusting the wrong person was.”

Three years earlier...

Amelia remembered the first time she met Richard.

He wasn’t rich.

He wasn’t powerful.

He wasn’t connected.

And that was exactly why she loved him.

At least, she thought she did.

Richard had looked at her like she was just Amelia.

Not a billionaire.

Not a CEO.

Not an inheritance.

Just a woman.

Or so she believed.

She remembered him saying:

“I don’t care about your money.”

Those words had stayed with her.

Because everyone else cared.

Investors.

Friends.

Strangers.

Everyone wanted something.

Richard seemed different.

But now she knew.

The most dangerous lies were the ones you wanted to believe.

The meeting continued.

“There's one more thing,” Sarah said.

Amelia looked at her.

“What?”

Sarah placed another file on the table.

“This came from your father's private archive.”

Amelia frowned.

“My father's archive?”

“Yes.”

“I thought everything was reviewed after his death.”

“Everything public.”

Sarah opened the folder.

“Not everything private.”

Inside was an old handwritten letter.

Amelia recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her father's.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

She opened it.

The letter contained only a few lines.

But those words changed everything.

Amelia,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that I feared.

Never trust a person who suddenly becomes interested in what you own instead of who you are.

Your greatest danger will not come from your enemies.

It will come from someone standing beside you.

Amelia stopped reading.

Her father's warning.

Written years ago.

Before Richard entered her life.

Before the wedding.

Before the betrayal.

Sarah continued.

“There was more.”

Amelia looked up.

“What more?”

Sarah hesitated.

“Your father knew about Richard.”

The room became silent.

“What?”

“He investigated him before your marriage.”

Amelia stood still.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because he didn’t have proof.”

Sarah looked at the documents.

“But he suspected.”

Amelia slowly sat down.

Her entire relationship with Richard suddenly felt different.

Was any of it real?

Or had she been part of his plan from the beginning?

Meanwhile, Richard was making his own move.

He knew one thing.

If Amelia controlled the story, he lost.

So he needed to control public opinion first.

That afternoon, cameras gathered outside his mansion.

Richard walked outside wearing a sad expression.

Perfect.

Broken husband.

Devastated man.

The public loved a tragedy.

“I want everyone to know,” he told reporters.

“My wife is the love of my life.”

The cameras flashed.

“I am cooperating fully with investigators.”

He lowered his head.

“I only want Amelia to come home safely.”

Millions watched.

Many believed him.

Until one screen changed everything.

A reporter suddenly received a notification.

Then another.

Then another.

A video had been released.

No announcement.

No explanation.

Just a file.

The title:

"THE TRUTH ABOUT RICHARD HALE."

The reporter opened it.

The world watched.

And Richard watched too.

His face lost all color.

Because the video wasn’t from the helicopter.

It was from somewhere else.

A place he never knew existed.

A hidden camera.

A private room.

A conversation.

His own voice.

Talking about Amelia’s death.

Talking about her fortune.

Talking about how he planned everything.

Richard stepped backward.

“No…”

The crowd outside began shouting.

Questions.

Accusations.

Chaos.

His carefully created image shattered in seconds.

But the worst part wasn’t the video.

The worst part was the final message attached.

From Amelia.

"Richard, you spent months planning my death."

"I spent months preparing your downfall."

That night, Richard sat alone in the mansion.

His empire was collapsing.

His reputation was destroyed.

His future was disappearing.

Then the lights suddenly turned off.

The entire house went dark.

Richard stood.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Then...

A sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming from the hallway.

Richard reached for his phone.

The footsteps stopped.

A voice came from the darkness.

A voice he knew.

A voice he thought he would never hear again.

“Did you really think I would let you get away that easily?”

Richard froze.

The lights came back on.

And standing at the entrance...

Was Amelia.

Alive.

Standing.

Looking directly at him.

But something was different.

The woman he pushed from the helicopter was gone.

This Amelia was colder.

Stronger.

Dangerous.

Richard whispered:

“How?”

Amelia smiled.

“The same way you planned my murder.”

She stepped forward.

“Carefully.”

A silence filled the room.

Then she placed a folder on the table.

“One more thing, Richard.”

“What?”

“You weren’t the only person who wanted me dead.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Amelia opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Richard...

With someone else.

Someone Richard thought would never be discovered.

Amelia looked at him.

“Tell me, husband.”

Her voice became quiet.

“Who is Victor Blackwood?”

Richard’s blood turned cold.

Because Amelia knew.

She knew everything.

May you like

And she was only beginning.
