CHAPTER 13: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Amelia Whitmore forgot how to breathe.
For years, she carried one painful memory.
Her mother was gone.
A childhood photograph.
A fading voice.
A perfume she could barely remember.
That was all she had left.
Her mother had been a ghost.
A beautiful memory buried in the past.
But now...
The ghost was standing alive on a screen.
Standing beside Charles Whitmore.
Watching her.
Waiting.
The world around Amelia disappeared.
There was no company.
No empire.
No war.
No enemies.
Only one impossible truth.
Her mother was alive.
Charles smiled when he saw Amelia’s reaction.
“This is the moment I have waited for.”
Amelia stared at the screen.
“Why?”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Why did you let me believe she was dead?”
The woman beside Charles looked at her.
Her expression was full of pain.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“Amelia…”
The sound of her name coming from her mother’s lips almost broke her.
Almost.
But years of betrayal had changed her.
“Don’t.”
Amelia stepped closer to the screen.
“You don’t get to say my name.”
A silence followed.
Her mother lowered her eyes.
And for the first time, Amelia saw something unexpected.
Shame.
Charles interrupted.
“Don’t waste your emotions on her.”
Amelia looked at him.
“You kidnapped her.”
Charles laughed.
“Did I?”
He looked at her mother.
“Tell her.”
The woman remained silent.
Charles smiled.
“Tell your daughter the truth.”
Amelia’s eyes narrowed.
“What truth?”
Her mother looked directly at her.
“The truth is…”
She paused.
“I was never dead.”
The words hurt more than Amelia expected.
Not because her mother survived.
Because she chose to disappear.
“You left me.”
Her mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
A painful silence.
“I did.”
Amelia turned away.
For a moment, she was no longer a billionaire CEO.
She was a little girl standing in a house waiting for her mother to come back.
A little girl who believed every promise.
A little girl who believed people she loved would never abandon her.
“You let me mourn you.”
Her voice shook.
“You let me think I lost you.”
Her mother whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.”
Amelia turned back.
“Everyone says that.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“My father said that.”
“Sarah said that.”
“Victor said that.”
“Everyone who hurt me had the same excuse.”
She looked at her mother.
“Protection.”
A pause.
“But nobody protected me.”
Charles watched the emotional moment with satisfaction.
Because this was exactly what he wanted.
Broken trust.
Broken alliances.
A family destroying itself.
But Charles made one mistake.
He underestimated Amelia.
Again.
Because Amelia was hurt.
But she wasn’t weak.
She looked at the screen.
“Why are you working with him?”
Her mother didn’t answer.
Charles smiled.
“Because she knows the truth about Alexander.”
Amelia’s expression changed.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Charles stepped closer.
“Your father wasn’t the hero you believe.”
Amelia looked at him coldly.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
Charles pointed at her mother.
“She was there when Alexander built the empire.”
“She knows what he did.”
“What did he do?”
Charles smiled.
“Ask her.”
Everyone waited.
The room became silent.
Finally, Amelia’s mother spoke.
“Your father made a deal.”
“With who?”
“With the Shadow Board.”
Amelia froze.
Victor had mentioned them.
A hidden organization controlling powerful people.
Her mother continued.
“When Alexander started Whitmore Dynamics, he needed money.”
“He needed connections.”
“He needed protection.”
“So he accepted help from people who wanted something in return.”
Amelia whispered:
“The Shadow Board.”
Her mother nodded.
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“But why hide this?”
Amelia’s mother looked at him.
“Because your father regretted it.”
She explained.
Years later, Alexander realized the organization he joined was not helping him build an empire.
They were trying to own it.
“He tried to leave.”
Charles smiled.
“And that was his mistake.”
Amelia looked at Charles.
“You were part of them.”
“Yes.”
The answer shocked everyone.
“I always was.”
Charles revealed the truth.
He was not trying to steal Whitmore Dynamics.
He was completing a mission that started decades ago.
“The company was never supposed to belong to Alexander.”
He looked at Amelia.
“It was supposed to belong to the people who funded it.”
Amelia laughed coldly.
“So this was all about money?”
“No.”
Charles shook his head.
“It was about control.”
He pointed at her.
“Your father created something too powerful.”
“Artificial intelligence systems.”
“Global security technology.”
“Data networks.”
“He built a machine that could influence the world.”
A pause.
“And then he decided he didn’t want to share it.”
Amelia finally understood.
The war was never about inheritance.
Richard wanted money.
Charles wanted power.
But the Shadow Board wanted something much bigger.
Control over the future.
Suddenly, the lights inside the facility flickered.
Victor looked at the systems.
His face changed.
“What happened?”
The screens began flashing.
Security breach.
Multiple locations.
Amelia looked at him.
“Charles?”
Victor shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Victor stared at the screen.
His expression became terrified.
“Someone else.”
A new video appeared.
Not Charles.
Not her mother.
Someone unknown.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Everyone has been so focused on the Whitmore family.”
A pause.
“You forgot about the person who started everything.”
Amelia stepped closer.
“Who are you?”
The voice laughed.
“I’m the reason Alexander Whitmore became powerful.”
The screen showed a symbol.
An old symbol Amelia had seen before.
On her father’s private documents.
Project Phoenix.
The voice continued.
“Charles was a pawn.”
“Richard was a pawn.”
“Even Alexander was a pawn.”
Silence.
“The only person who was never supposed to survive…”
The camera moved closer.
“Was you, Amelia.”
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small device attached to Amelia’s phone.
He grabbed it.
“Amelia.”
She looked at him.
“What?”
“This was planted on you.”
Everyone froze.
“By who?”
Daniel examined it.
His face became pale.
Because the device carried a fingerprint.
A fingerprint they all recognized.
Sarah.
Amelia slowly turned.
Sarah was still missing.
The room became silent.
Because the evidence was impossible.
Sarah was either the traitor.
Or someone had been framing her.
Then Amelia’s phone received one final message.
A photo.
Sarah.
Alive.
Standing in front of a mirror.
And behind her...
Was a man.
A man Amelia had never met.
But the message explained everything.
"Your mother didn't abandon you."
"She was running from him."
Amelia stared at the image.
Then read the final line.
"The man behind the entire war is your grandfather."
Amelia’s face went pale.
Because her grandfather had died before she was born.
Or at least...
May you like
That was what everyone told her.
