Chapter 4 - The WarningPolice arrived within minutes.

The unconscious man was one of Whitmore Global's contracted accountants.

His name was Daniel Price.

He was supposed to be in Boston that morning.

Instead, he had somehow entered Whitmore House.

Adrian watched from the corner.

Still disguised.

Still invisible.

And now furious.

Grace sat in the hallway, pale and trembling.

An officer asked her questions.

“What were you doing here?”

“Checking inventory.”

“Did you know the victim?”

“No.”

“Did you see anyone?”

Grace hesitated.

Then glanced toward Victor.

He looked away.

Adrian noticed.

So did the officer.

After the police left, Malcolm arrived.

He appeared concerned.

“Grace, are you all right?”

She nodded.

Malcolm crouched beside her.

“I heard what happened.”

“Why was Daniel here?”

Malcolm sighed.

“Some employees are careless.”

Grace looked at him.

“He wasn't careless.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Because someone attacked him.”

Malcolm smiled faintly.

“You've been watching too many crime shows.”

Adrian saw the look Grace gave him.

She didn't believe Malcolm.

That evening, Adrian followed Malcolm.

The disguise allowed him to move unnoticed.

Malcolm entered the underground garage.

Victor was waiting.

“What happened?” Victor asked.

“The accountant survived.”

Victor swore.

Malcolm looked around.

“What about the maid?”

“She knows something.”

“Then we can't leave her here.”

Adrian's hands clenched.

Victor lowered his voice.

“Tonight?”

Malcolm shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian may still come back.”

Victor laughed.

“Your boss is gone.”

Malcolm's expression turned dark.

“You don't understand him.”

“His phone has been off for two days.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian's heart pounded.

Malcolm was suspicious.

Very suspicious.

Then Victor asked:

“What about the transfer?”

“Friday.”

“Then after Friday?”

Malcolm smiled.

“Whitmore Global becomes ours.”

Adrian stepped backward.

A metal pipe struck the wall beside his head.

He spun.

Victor stood behind him.

“You heard too much.”

Adrian ran.

He sprinted through the garage.

Victor chased him.

Adrian turned a corner and slammed through a maintenance door.

Victor stopped.

He looked at Malcolm.

“Where did he go?”

Malcolm stared into the darkness.

“Find him.”

Adrian reached the mansion through a hidden service tunnel.

He had nearly escaped.

Until he saw Grace.

She was standing at the end of the corridor.

Her face went white.

“You.”

Adrian stopped.

“You saw me.”

Grace stared at his face.

At his hands.

At his posture.

Then her eyes widened.

“You're not Henry.”

Adrian said nothing.

Grace whispered:

“I know who you are.”

Before Adrian could respond, every light in the corridor went out.

A second later, the mansion doors locked.

Then a voice came over the intercom.

“Good evening, Mr. Whitmore.”

May you like

Malcolm.

“You've been away too long.”
