Chapter 11 - The Father in the ShadowsAdrian exited the mansion alone.

Nathan's men surrounded him.
Grace wanted to follow.
Adrian stopped her.
“No.”
“You can't do this alone.”
“This isn't your fight.”
She looked at him.
“You gave me a job.”
“You gave me food.”
“That wasn't a job.”
“It was the first decent thing anyone had done for me in years.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Then stay alive.”
He walked into the courtyard.
A black SUV stopped.
The rear door opened.
Nathan stepped out.
Adrian stared at him.
The father he had buried.
The ghost who had haunted his childhood.
Standing alive.
Older.
Cold.
But smiling.
“Hello, son.”
Adrian's voice was barely audible.
“You let me mourn you.”
“I had to disappear.”
“You let me hate the people around me.”
Nathan smiled.
“Hate made you strong.”
“I became what you wanted.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you here?”
Nathan looked toward the mansion.
“Because you're ready.”
“For what?”
“To take your place.”
Adrian laughed.
“I don't want it.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“You don't get to choose.”
“I always have.”
Nathan glanced at the mansion.
“Do you remember what happened to Clara?”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“You killed her.”
“No.”
Nathan pointed toward the balcony.
A sniper appeared.
Grace stood there.
Adrian froze.
Nathan smiled.
“One command.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Don't.”
“Come with me.”
“No.”
Nathan lifted one finger.
The sniper aimed.
Adrian finally understood.
This was never about money.
It was about obedience.
He looked at Grace.
Then Nathan.
“Fine.”
He stepped into the SUV.
Grace screamed his name.
The vehicle drove away.
Inside, Nathan handed him a tablet.
“Sign.”
Adrian looked down.
The transfer papers.
“All of Whitmore Global.”
“Everything.”
“And then?”
“You become chairman.”
Adrian stared at him.
“That's what you wanted.”
“No.”
Nathan smiled.
“I want you to become Black Meridian.”
Adrian looked up.
“What?”
Nathan leaned closer.
“Whitmore Global is only the public face.”
He touched the tablet.
“The real empire is hidden.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
“Then you've made one mistake.”
Nathan smiled.
“What?”
“You've forgotten what I learned from you.”
“What?”
Adrian signed.
Nathan laughed.
“Excellent.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You taught me never to trust anyone.”
The SUV stopped.
The driver turned.
Adrian smiled.
“And I never trusted the tablet.”
Nathan's smile vanished.
Adrian's signature had been fake.
The document was meaningless.
Nathan pulled a gun.
Then the car exploded into darkness.
When Adrian woke, Grace was beside him.
She had somehow tracked the SUV.
And she was holding the real transfer document.
But she wasn't smiling.
“Adrian…”
“What?”
“There is a name on this.”
He looked.
His own name.
But not as owner.
As beneficiary.

Underneath it was one final clause.
Upon the death of Adrian Whitmore, ownership transfers to Grace Miller.
