Chapter 13 - The Factory of GhostsThe old Whitmore factory stood abandoned at the edge of the river.

Rust covered the gates.
Broken windows stared into the night.
Adrian and Grace entered through a hidden tunnel beneath the loading dock.
“You've been here before,” Adrian whispered.
“My mother brought me.”
“When?”
“After Clara disappeared.”
They reached a locked chamber.
Grace removed a necklace from her neck.
There was a tiny metal key inside.
Adrian stared.
“You've carried that for years?”
“My mother told me never to open it.”
She inserted it.
The door opened.
Inside were files.
Boxes.
Photographs.
And one giant metal vault.
Grace approached.
The scanner lit up.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
Adrian frowned.
“You're the key.”
Grace looked at him.
“I never wanted any of this.”
“I know.”
The vault opened.
Inside was enough evidence to destroy governments.
Blackmail files.
Secret payments.
Illegal acquisitions.
Names of judges.
Senators.
Bankers.
Corporate leaders.
At the center was a single folder.
ADRIAN WHITMORE.
He opened it.
There was a photograph of himself as a baby.
Another of Clara holding him.
Another of his father.
Then the final document.
PROJECT HEIR COMPLETION DATE: AUGUST 18, 2026.
Adrian stared.
“Today.”
Grace went pale.
“What does that mean?”
A door slammed.
Malcolm stepped inside.
Behind him stood Nathan.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
And several armed men.
Nathan smiled.
“Congratulations, Adrian.”
Adrian faced him.
“What happens today?”
“You inherit everything.”
“I already own everything.”
“No.”
Nathan's smile vanished.
“Today you inherit the consequences.”
Malcolm raised a gun.
Nathan continued.
“Black Meridian has been preparing for one final transfer.”
Adrian glanced at Grace.
“The vault.”
“Yes.”
“Why do you need her?”
“Because the system was built to reject everyone connected to me.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“She is the only clean identity.”
Grace stepped forward.
“And once I unlock it?”
Nathan smiled.
“You'll become the legal owner.”
Adrian understood.
Nathan didn't want to own Black Meridian.
He wanted someone else to own it.
Someone who could act as a shield.
Someone who had no criminal history.
Someone society would trust.
Grace.
“You were going to frame her.”
Nathan nodded.
“And leave her with everything.”
Grace whispered:
“Everything except freedom.”
Nathan looked at Adrian.
“You understand now.”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“Not quite.”
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a phone.
The recording light was on.
Nathan's expression changed.
“You…”
Adrian smiled.
“Thank you for explaining everything.”
Malcolm lunged.
A gunshot rang out.
Evelyn screamed.
And someone fell.
Not Adrian.
Not Grace.
Nathan.
But the man on the floor was not Nathan.
It was Malcolm.

The person standing behind him had just pulled the trigger.
Daniel.
