Chapter 9 - The Brother in the DarkRichard stepped out of the cellar.

The barn was empty.
No Marcus.
Only a speaker on a wooden post.
A recording.
Marcus's voice filled the room.
“You always were stubborn, Richard.”
Richard stared at the speaker.
“Come out.”
A soft laugh.
“Not yet.”
Mark held Noah tightly.
Daniel whispered:
“He wants you angry.”
Richard answered:
“He already has me angry.”
Marcus continued.
“You took everything from me.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“I took nothing.”
“You took the company.”
“You lost it.”
“I built half of it.”
“You stole the other half.”
The recording went silent.
Then Marcus said:
“You never asked why I faked my death.”
Richard froze.
“I didn't need to.”
“You should have.”
The speaker clicked.
A new recording began.
Marcus sounded younger.
Six years earlier.
He was speaking to someone.
“I don't want the money.”
A female voice answered.
Richard recognized Claudia.
“You don't have to want it.”
Marcus said:
“I want Richard destroyed.”
Claudia laughed.
“Then let me handle the family.”
The recording ended.
Richard looked at Mark.
“She was with him before the wedding.”
Mark's face crumbled.
Claudia had entered his life after Elena died.
Richard had assumed grief had made his son vulnerable.
Instead, she had been part of the operation from the beginning.
Another recording played.
This time, Elena.
“If Richard ever hears these files, tell him I tried.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I knew Marcus was alive,” Elena said.
“But I couldn't prove it.”
She paused.
“He came to me.”
Mark looked stunned.
“When?”
“Three months before my accident.”
Elena continued:
“He offered me money to keep quiet.”
Richard gripped the edge of the table.
“You refused.”
“Yes.”
Then a second voice.
Marcus.
“Then your son will pay.”
Elena answered:
“Leave Noah alone.”
Marcus laughed.
“He is the reason I don't need you.”
The recording ended.
Richard understood.
Noah had witnessed or been present during something that could identify Marcus.
But he was only three now.
How could a child remember?
Then he noticed something.
Noah was staring at the speaker.
Not frightened.
Confused.
He said:
“That's Uncle Marcus.”
Richard knelt.
“Have you seen him?”
Noah nodded.
“Where?”
“On the phone.”
“Mommy's phone?”
Noah shook his head.
“Daddy's phone.”
Mark went rigid.
“When?”
Noah pointed toward him.
“Before Mommy went away.”
Richard looked at Mark.
Mark's phone.
The old phone.
The one he had claimed to lose after Elena's death.
Richard searched Mark's bag.
Nothing.
Then Daniel suddenly spoke.
“Your son's old phone was recovered from the crash site.”
Richard turned.
“You told me it was destroyed.”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I lied.”
“Where is it?”
“Police evidence.”
Richard knew they had seconds.
They left the barn through the back road.
Daniel gave them a hidden location.
A storage unit.
Inside was a metal evidence box.
The old phone.
Richard turned it on.
One video remained.
Elena was sitting in her kitchen.
Noah was playing on the floor.
Mark stood behind her.
And Marcus appeared on the screen through a video call.
Elena asked:
“What do you want?”
Marcus replied:
“Your son.”
Elena stiffened.
“Why?”
“Because he touched the ledger.”
Richard's heart stopped.
Noah had touched the ledger?
A toddler?
Elena moved quickly toward the camera.
“Noah can't read.”
Marcus smiled.
“He doesn't need to.”
He held up a piece of paper.
A children's drawing.
Three circles.
A house.
A car.
A stick figure in the snow.
Richard stared.
Noah had drawn the scene from his memory.
Marcus said:
“Children remember what adults forget.”
The video ended.
Then the phone displayed one final message.
THE ORIGINAL FOOTAGE IS IN THE HOUSE.
Mark looked at Richard.
“What house?”
Richard answered.
“Elena's.”
The house had been sold eighteen months ago.
To a buyer who had never visited it.
Richard suddenly realized something.
May you like
Someone had bought Elena's house not to own it.
But to hide it.
