Chapter 10 - The House That Was Never EmptyElena's old house stood at the edge of a quiet neighborhood.

Richard had avoided it since her death.

Now he understood why.

The house looked abandoned.

No lights.

No furniture.

No signs of life.

But the front door had a fresh lock.

Daniel broke it.

Inside, the air smelled stale.

Richard walked through the living room.

Everything had been removed.

Almost everything.

A single child's drawing remained taped beneath the stairs.

Three stick figures.

Elena.

Noah.

And a fourth figure with no face.

Richard crouched.

“What is this?”

Noah touched the paper.

“Bad man.”

Mark stared.

“You remember?”

Noah nodded.

“He stood there.”

Noah pointed toward the kitchen.

They followed.

A false panel sat behind an old cabinet.

Richard opened it.

A hidden room.

Inside were monitors.

Hard drives.

Cameras.

Files.

The house had been converted into a surveillance station.

Daniel's face went pale.

“They were watching Elena.”

Richard looked at the screens.

One monitor showed a bedroom.

Another showed the driveway.

Another showed Noah at daycare.

Another showed Richard entering his own office.

Months of footage.

Years.

Someone had watched the family continuously.

Then a screen flickered.

A video from nineteen months ago.

The night Elena disappeared.

Richard stared.

The timestamp showed 11:43 p.m.

Elena entered the house.

She was carrying Noah.

She looked terrified.

Behind her came Mark.

Richard's breathing stopped.

On the screen, Elena argued with him.

No audio.

Mark grabbed her arm.

Elena pulled away.

Then Claudia entered.

Richard felt sick.

Claudia handed Mark an envelope.

Then another person appeared.

Marcus.

Alive.

Elena saw him.

She froze.

She ran.

The video cut.

A second camera showed Elena running toward the back door.

Marcus followed.

Mark remained behind.

Claudia watched.

Then the feed changed.

A third camera captured Elena getting into her car.

Marcus stood in the driveway.

Claudia got into another vehicle.

Richard watched the next frame.

A black SUV followed Elena.

Then the video glitched.

The screen went dark.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Corrupted.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

He examined the monitor.

The timeline continued.

Someone had manually deleted seven minutes.

He found the backup server.

There.

Seven missing minutes.

Richard restored them.

Video returned.

Elena's car was parked.

She wasn't inside.

A man dragged her toward the SUV.

Richard's heart shattered.

“Who?”

The camera zoomed.

The man's face became visible.

Richard stared.

It was Mark.

His own son.

Richard turned.

Mark looked horrified.

“I didn't do that.”

“You're on the screen.”

“I went after her.”

“For what?”

“To save her.”

Richard shook his head.

The footage continued.

Mark pulled Elena away from the man.

They struggled.

Then Marcus appeared.

He struck Mark.

Claudia dragged Elena into the SUV.

Mark fell.

The screen cut again.

Richard stared at his son.

“You knew.”

Mark was crying.

“I tried to stop them.”

“You lied to me.”

“I thought I could find her.”

Richard grabbed him by the collar.

“Where is she?”

Mark could barely speak.

“I don't know.”

Then Noah said quietly:

“Mommy went to the basement.”

Everyone turned.

“What basement?”

Noah pointed downward.

Richard looked at the hidden room floor.

A steel trapdoor sat beneath the monitors.

They opened it.

Stairs led underground.

Daniel stepped back.

“This wasn't on the property records.”

Richard took the flashlight.

They descended.

The basement contained only one thing.

A chair.

An old camera.

And a wall covered in photographs of Noah.

Richard's blood ran cold.

Then the camera turned on by itself.

The screen showed Elena.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

She looked directly into the lens.

“Richard.”

He stopped breathing.

“I knew you'd eventually find this.”

Then she said:

“Please don't come looking for me.”

A pause.

“They are using you as bait.”

The screen went black.

Richard stared.

Mark whispered:

“She's alive.”

Richard's answer was immediate.

“Then we're bringing her home.”

A phone rang in the darkness.

Not Richard's.

Not Mark's.

Daniel's.

Daniel answered.

The voice on the other end said:

“You shouldn't have opened the basement.”

Daniel's face collapsed.

May you like

Then the caller said:

“Because now Richard knows where Elena is.”
