Chapter 15 - The Flight HomeBy sunrise, the mountain property was surrounded by law enforcement.

The evidence had been secured.

Marcus was arrested.

Claudia was arrested.

Detective Reed was taken into custody.

Daniel was questioned.

Mark surrendered his access to every family account.

But Ethan Vale remained missing.

For weeks, authorities searched.

No trace.

Then Richard discovered the truth.

The second ownership certificate was fake.

A sophisticated forgery.

The real question was why Ethan believed it would work.

Elena found the answer.

She sat with Richard in his study.

Noah slept upstairs.

Mark had left the room under police escort.

Elena placed a folder on the desk.

“Your brother had one final plan.”

Richard opened it.

Inside were records from twenty years earlier.

A partnership agreement.

A forgotten trust.

A dormant company.

Richard read the name.

Vale Strategic Holdings.

He recognized the signature.

His father had created it before Richard took over.

The trust had one condition.

If Richard died or became legally incapacitated without naming a successor, the controlling shares would temporarily pass to the oldest surviving male heir outside the direct line.

Richard's oldest surviving male heir.

Ethan.

Richard sat back.

“That bastard planned for me to lose control legally.”

Elena nodded.

“Marcus wasn't trying to own the company himself.”

Richard stared at the document.

“He was preparing Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan has been alive the entire time.”

“We believe so.”

Richard looked toward the window.

Colorado snow covered the mountains.

The same mountains where Noah had stood barefoot.

Where everything had begun.

He thought of the wooden airplane.

The cheap toy Claudia had mocked.

The gift she had thrown into the snow.

The object that had broken open the family's carefully constructed lie.

Richard smiled faintly.

“Noah saved us.”

Elena nodded.

“He remembered what adults tried to erase.”

Richard looked toward the hallway.

A tiny voice called:

“Grandpa?”

Richard stood.

Noah walked into the study carrying the wooden airplane.

The plane had been repaired.

The scratched wing was painted again.

Richard knelt.

“You fixed it.”

Noah nodded.

“For Mommy.”

Elena knelt beside them.

Noah looked at her.

“Are you staying?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Richard put a hand on the boy's shoulder.

“For a long time.”

Noah smiled.

Then he looked at the airplane.

“There is still something inside.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

Noah turned the plane over.

He pointed beneath the wing.

Richard examined it.

A tiny second seam.

He opened it.

Inside was a small folded piece of paper.

Elena stared.

“I didn't put that there.”

Richard unfolded it.

Four words.

THE FIRST HOUSE ISN'T YOURS.

Richard looked at Elena.

“What does that mean?”

She stared at the note.

Then her face changed.

“The first house.”

Richard understood.

Their family had owned a house in Colorado before the company.

The old Vale estate.

It had been demolished thirty years ago.

Or so they believed.

Elena picked up her coat.

“Richard.”

He looked at her.

“We need to go.”

“Where?”

She pointed toward the mountains.

“The old estate.”

Richard looked at Noah.

The child was holding the airplane.

For one brief moment, Richard thought the nightmare was finally ending.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Silence.

Then a man's voice.

Ethan.

“You really should stop opening those toys.”

Richard stood completely still.

Ethan continued:

“Because this next secret isn't about money.”

Richard's grip tightened.

“What do you want?”

A pause.

Then Ethan said:

“I want Noah.”

The line went dead.

Richard immediately locked the study door.

Elena grabbed Noah.

Outside, the first snowflakes of the new storm began to fall.

Richard looked through the window.

A black SUV was parked across the road.

The engine was running.

No one got out.

Richard reached for the wooden airplane.

The tiny propeller turned once in his hand.

And for the first time, Richard understood the real danger.

The airplane had never been only a hiding place.

It had been a message.

Elena had hidden the evidence inside it because she knew no adult around Noah could be trusted.

But someone had known.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been waiting for Richard to discover the truth.

Richard looked at his grandson.

Noah stared back.

Then, very quietly, the child said:

“Grandpa.”

Richard knelt.

“What is it?”

Noah pointed toward the window.

“That man was at Mommy's house.”

Richard turned.

The SUV was gone.

The snow erased its tire tracks almost instantly.

Richard looked back at the wooden airplane.

Then at Elena.

Then at Mark, who stood frozen in the hallway.

Three generations of the same family.

One buried secret after another.

And somewhere beyond the falling snow, Ethan Vale was already moving toward them.

This time, he wasn't hiding.

May you like

He was coming for Noah.

And he knew exactly where they would go next.
