Chapter 8 - The Name on the Birth CertificateRichard pulled Noah against his chest.

Mark stood frozen.
The cellar hatch opened.
But instead of Claudia's face, an old man's hand appeared.
A flashlight followed.
Then Daniel Cross's face.
“Richard.”
Mark moved protectively in front of Noah.
Daniel raised both hands.
“I'm not here to hurt you.”
Richard stared at him.
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because if I wanted you dead, you wouldn't be talking.”
Mark flinched.
Daniel climbed down.
He looked exhausted.
“They're cleaning everything tonight.”
Richard narrowed his eyes.
“Who are they?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Marcus.”
Richard nodded.
“You knew he was alive.”
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Yes.”
“You helped him.”
“I helped myself survive.”
Richard stepped closer.
“Why?”
Daniel's expression broke.
“Because Marcus has people everywhere.”
He explained everything.
Marcus had faked his death after discovering that Richard planned to remove him from the company.
Instead of fighting openly, Marcus built a hidden network.
Shell companies.
Private security contractors.
Corrupt officials.
Financial accounts.
Over time, he gained influence over the company's internal systems.
Claudia was approached through Mark.
She was promised wealth.
Mark became trapped.
Daniel was blackmailed.
Even Detective Reed was compromised.
But Elena found the entire structure.
She copied the evidence.
Then she disappeared.
Richard asked:
“Where is she?”
Daniel looked away.
“I don't know.”
“She's dead.”
“I didn't say that.”
Richard stared.
Daniel whispered:
“The body they identified wasn't Elena.”
Mark grabbed him.
“What?”
Daniel pushed him away.
“The body had severe injuries. Identification was based on dental records.”
Richard's heart raced.
“Was it her?”
“No.”
“Then where is my daughter-in-law?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I only know that she was alive after the crash.”
Richard's mind raced.
Then Daniel pulled a document from his coat.
The birth certificate.
He handed it over.
Richard opened it.
Noah's name was there.
Mother:
Elena Grace Vale.
Father:
Mark Richard Vale.
Everything looked normal.
But beneath the official seal was another page.
A hospital amendment.
Richard read it.
Then his face went blank.
The blood type didn't match.
Noah's recorded blood type was impossible under the listed parents.
Richard looked at Mark.
“Did you know?”
Mark shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel whispered:
“This is why Marcus wants the boy.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“What does Noah have?”
Daniel looked directly at the child.
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
“That Elena knew Marcus was alive before anyone else did.”
Richard frowned.
“That doesn't explain Noah.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Noah's blood type matches Marcus's.”
The room went silent.
Mark's face turned white.
Richard looked at Noah.
The child was too young to understand.
Daniel continued.
“The hospital records were altered.”
Richard's voice was barely a whisper.
“Are you telling me Noah isn't my biological grandson?”
Mark looked at Daniel.
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I'm telling you the records were falsified.”
Richard stared.
“Then who is Noah's father?”
Daniel answered:
“Your son.”
Mark exhaled.
“But the hospital changed the blood type.”
Richard's expression hardened.
“Why?”
“Because someone wanted to create doubt around Noah's identity.”
Daniel pulled out another file.
Inside was a photograph from the night Elena disappeared.
She was holding Noah.
On the back she had written:
HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE IS CARRYING YET.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“What is Noah carrying?”
Daniel's answer was quiet.
“Not inside his body.”
He pointed toward the wooden airplane.
“In the toy.”
The memory card.
The brass key.
Richard suddenly understood.
Elena wasn't hiding evidence from Noah.
She was using Noah as the one person nobody would search.
The door above the cellar slammed.
Daniel looked up.
“We have seconds.”
“From whom?”
Daniel whispered:
“Marcus.”
A voice came through the barn.
“Richard.”
Everyone froze.
The voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
“I've waited six years to see you again.”
Richard knew that voice.
May you like
His dead brother.
Marcus.
