Chapter 5 - The Vault Beneath the CityThey left the lodge before dawn.

Richard refused to let Noah out of his sight.
Claudia stayed behind.
Mark insisted she did not know where they were going.
Richard didn't believe him.
Two hours later, they reached the old family office in Denver.
The building had been closed for renovations that never happened.
Dust covered the marble lobby.
Richard used his old master key.
The elevator still worked.
It descended below the parking level.
Below the basement.
Then lower.
Noah slept in Richard's arms.
Mark stood beside them in silence.
When the doors opened, Richard saw a corridor he had not visited in years.
At the end stood a steel door.
Mark pointed.
“The vault.”
Richard inserted the brass key.
A mechanical lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside were shelves of files.
Original contracts.
Bank statements.
Property documents.
Richard grabbed the nearest ledger.
Dates stretched back twelve years.
He turned pages.
Transfers.
Shell corporations.
Fake charities.
Land purchases.
Then he found his own signature.
Richard's throat tightened.
Someone had used it to approve transactions worth more than fourteen million dollars.
But the dates were impossible.
He had been overseas.
He pulled out his passport records.
Every transfer corresponded with a day he had been out of the country.
Someone had known his movements.
Mark pointed to another file.
“This one.”
Richard opened it.
It contained documents from the night Elena died.
A repair invoice.
An insurance claim.
A hospital intake report.
Then a photograph.
Richard stopped.
It showed Elena's car on a mountain road.
The front end was destroyed.
But beside the wreck was another vehicle.
A black SUV.
Richard recognized it.
Claudia's SUV.
His heart pounded.
“Why was this never in the police report?”
Mark stared at the photograph.
“I've never seen that.”
Richard turned the picture over.
Handwritten on the back:
THE SUV LEFT BEFORE THE AMBULANCE ARRIVED.
A sound came from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Richard closed the file.
“Someone followed us.”
Mark moved toward the door.
Richard grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He switched off the light.
The three men outside stopped.
Richard held Noah close.
Silence.
Then the steel door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
The lock rattled.
A man's voice came through the door.
“Richard.”
Daniel Cross.
Richard felt his pulse rise.
“You need to leave.”
Richard said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“You have the wrong idea about all of this.”
Richard whispered:
“Tell me why Claudia's SUV was at Elena's crash.”
Silence.
Then Daniel laughed softly.
“That isn't the question you should be asking.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“What question should I ask?”
“Ask why Elena wasn't in the car when it went over the mountain.”
Mark went completely still.
Richard stared at the door.
“What?”
Daniel said:
“She was alive when we found her.”
Mark covered his mouth.
Daniel's voice dropped.
“And somebody moved her.”
Richard looked at Mark.
“You said the hospital confirmed she died there.”
“I was told that.”
“By whom?”
Mark looked terrified.
“Claudia.”
A sudden explosion shook the building.
The vault door bent inward.
Smoke filled the corridor.
Richard fell.
Noah screamed.
Mark dragged his father away from the door.
“Dad!”
The emergency lights came on.
The vault was filling with smoke.
Richard looked toward the shelves.
One file was burning.
A red folder.
On the cover:
ELENA VALE.
Mark reached for it.
Richard shouted:
“Leave it!”
But Mark already had the folder.
He opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Elena.
Alive.
May you like
Taken after the crash.
And standing beside her was someone Richard had trusted for twenty years.
