Chapter 14: The Queen of the Circle

The broadcast continued.

Amina stood beneath the golden lights of a private ballroom.

The same kind of ballroom where her wedding had begun.

The same place where everyone believed she had died.

But now...

She was alive.

Standing beside Elias.

Holding a glass of champagne.

Smiling.

Emily felt something inside her break.

After everything.

After the morgue.

After the lies.

After the bodies.

After the secrets.

She had believed one thing.

Amina was the victim.

But the woman on the screen looked nothing like a victim.

She looked like someone who had finally reached the place she had been fighting for.

"The Circle welcomes its new leader."

Elias's voice echoed through the broadcast.

The people behind them stood and applauded.

Emily recognized some faces.

Doctors.

Business owners.

Government officials.

People who appeared on television every day.

People everyone trusted.

All connected.

All part of the same machine.

Adam stared at the screen.

His expression was empty.

"Amina..."

His voice was barely audible.

"Why?"

No one answered.

Because nobody knew.

Except maybe Nadia.

Emily looked at her.

"You knew this was possible."

Nadia didn't deny it.

"I feared it."

"What does that mean?"

Nadia watched the screen.

"It means I spent years trying to save my daughter from becoming like them."

A pause.

"But I was too late."

The broadcast changed.

Amina stepped forward.

"My entire life, people have told me the same story."

She looked directly into the camera.

"That my family was powerful."

"That my father built an empire."

"That my mother was a victim."

"That Daniel Voss was a monster."

She smiled slightly.

"But everyone forgot one thing."

The room became silent.

"Monsters are not born."

Amina raised her glass.

"They are created."

Emily felt a chill.

Amina wasn't denying what happened.

She was explaining it.

Justifying it.

"My mother wanted to destroy the Circle."

Amina looked toward Elias.

"Elias wanted to control it."

She looked toward Daniel.

"Daniel wanted to survive it."

Then she smiled.

"And I..."

A pause.

"I learned from all of them."

Adam suddenly moved toward the exit.

Emily stopped him.

"Where are you going?"

"To get her."

His voice was cold.

"Adam."

"She's my sister."

Emily looked at him.

"And if she doesn't want to be saved?"

He stopped.

The question hurt because he knew it was possible.

Marcus approached.

"We can't attack the Circle."

Adam turned.

"Why?"

"Because you don't understand."

Marcus looked at the screen.

"The Circle isn't a building."

A pause.

"It's everyone in that room."

Emily looked at the broadcast.

Hundreds of people.

Powerful people.

Protected people.

"You can't arrest an organization that controls the people making the arrests."

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly."

Suddenly, the station lights turned off.

Everyone froze.

Again.

But this time...

Nobody panicked.

Because they knew.

Someone wanted their attention.

A projector turned on.

A single image appeared on the wall.

Amina.

Then a message.

PRIVATE MESSAGE FOR EMILY CARTER

Emily stepped forward.

"What?"

The others looked confused.

The video started.

Amina appeared alone.

Not the confident woman from the broadcast.

A different Amina.

Tired.

Afraid.

The real Amina.

"If you are seeing this..."

She looked around nervously.

"Then the broadcast already happened."

Emily moved closer.

Amina continued.

"I know what everyone thinks."

A pause.

"They think I chose this."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But I didn't."

Emily froze.

"What?"

Adam stepped closer.

Amina looked directly into the camera.

"Elias is forcing me."

The room became silent.

"He has something."

She swallowed.

"Something that can destroy millions of lives."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Amina continued:

"The Circle has existed for decades because everyone believes they are untouchable."

She looked terrified.

"But Elias found something bigger."

The video glitched.

Then Amina whispered:

"The original list."

Marcus's face changed.

"What list?"

Nadia answered before anyone else.

"The names."

Everyone looked at her.

"The names of everyone who ever worked with the Circle."

Emily understood.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police.

Doctors.

Everyone.

Amina continued:

"If Elias releases it..."

She shook her head.

"Governments will collapse."

The screen flickered.

"He isn't threatening people."

A pause.

"He is controlling them."

Then Amina looked directly at Emily.

"I need you to do something."

Emily leaned closer.

"What?"

Amina whispered:

"Find the first bride."

The video ended.

Silence.

Emily looked confused.

"The first bride?"

Nobody answered.

Then Sara suddenly stood.

Her face had lost all color.

"No."

Everyone turned.

Sara was trembling.

"I know who she means."

Adam looked at her.

"Who?"

Sara looked toward the old family photographs.

Toward the woman standing in the center.

Nadia.

"The first bride..."

She whispered.

"Was your mother."

Nadia froze.

Emily stared.

"What?"

Sara continued:

"Before Nadia married into the Rahman family..."

A pause.

"She was already married."

Nobody moved.

"To the man who created the Circle."

Emily felt cold.

"Who?"

Sara looked at Nadia.

Nadia closed her eyes.

Because she knew the secret was finally coming out.

Sara whispered:

"His name was..."

The lights suddenly returned.

A gunshot exploded.

Everyone screamed.

The projector shattered.

Smoke filled the room.

When it cleared...

Sara was gone.

And on the wall behind where she stood...

A message had been written in red.

Not paint.

Blood.

Three words:

"STOP DIGGING, EMILY."

Emily stared at the warning.

Then looked at the empty space where Sara had been.

Someone had taken her.

Again.

But this time...

They didn't leave a clue.

They left a challenge.

Because whoever controlled the Circle...

was no longer hiding.

May you like

They were coming for Emily.
