Chapter 9: Beneath the Ruins

The floor vanished beneath them.
Daniel felt the world tilt violently before stone, dust, and darkness swallowed everything.
Victoria screamed.
Instinct took over.
Daniel threw himself toward her, wrapping one arm around her waist just before they plunged through the collapsing floor.
For a few endless seconds...
There was nothing but falling.
Then...
CRASH!
They landed on something wooden.
Rotten beams shattered beneath their weight.
Pain shot through Daniel's shoulder as he rolled across damp stone.
Silence followed.
Broken only by the sound of loose rocks continuing to fall from the ceiling.
Daniel groaned.
His ears rang.
Everything was dark.
"...Victoria?"
No answer.
His heart lurched.
"Victoria!"
A weak cough echoed somewhere nearby.
"I'm... here."
Relief washed over him despite everything that had happened.
He reached into his pocket.
His phone screen was cracked, but the flashlight still worked.
A narrow beam cut through the darkness.
Victoria lay several feet away, trapped beneath a fallen timber.
Blood trickled from a cut above her eyebrow.
Daniel rushed over.
"Don't move."
She forced a painful smile.
"You still came after me."
He knelt beside the beam.
"I'm not leaving anyone to die."
For a brief second, something flickered across Victoria's face.
Not manipulation.
Not calculation.
Just regret.
Above them...
Detective Collins shouted into the opening.
"Daniel!"
"Can you hear me?"
Daniel looked up.
The hole was nearly twenty feet overhead.
Dust continued to pour from the fractured ceiling.
"We're alive!" he yelled.
"But she's trapped!"
Collins turned to the rescue team.
"Get ropes!"
"No heavy equipment."
"The structure isn't stable."
Back below...
Daniel pushed against the timber.
It didn't move.
Victoria shook her head.
"Forget it."
"I'm not leaving you."
She looked at him sadly.
"You should."
He ignored her and examined the beam more carefully.
One end rested against a collapsed stone wall.
The other pinned her leg.
"If I lift this..."
"You can pull free."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"My ankle's broken."
Daniel froze.
"How do you know?"
"I heard it."
He swallowed hard.
"Then we'll splint it."
She gave a faint laugh.
"You really think everything has a solution."
"I have to."
A long silence settled between them.
For the first time since they met...
There were no lies left to hide behind.
Victoria spoke quietly.
"You saved me."
Daniel didn't answer.
"You shouldn't have."
"I couldn't watch someone die."
"Even after everything?"
He paused.
"I don't know who you are anymore."
"But I know who I want to be."
Those words struck Victoria harder than any accusation.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You know..."
"I almost told you."
Daniel looked up.
"Told me what?"
"The truth."
She stared at the cracked ceiling.
"The night you proposed..."
"I almost said no."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I knew I didn't deserve you."
His hands tightened around the timber.
"Then why say yes?"
Victoria whispered,
"Because for the first time in my life..."
"...I wanted something my father hadn't chosen."
Daniel stopped pushing.
He looked at her.
She continued.
"I didn't plan to love you."
"But somewhere..."
"I did."
He remained silent.
"I know you don't believe me."
"I don't know what to believe."
She nodded.
"That's fair."
Above them...
The rescue team lowered a rope.
Detective Collins called down,
"We're coming!"
Daniel looked up.
"No!"
Collins frowned.
"What?"
"The floor's still moving!"
As if to prove his point...
A deep rumble echoed through the underground chamber.
Another section of the ceiling cracked.
Collins immediately ordered everyone back.
"Nobody goes down!"
Victoria looked toward the darkness beyond the flashlight's reach.
"Daniel..."
"There's something you need to see."
He frowned.
"What?"
She pointed deeper into the chamber.
"There."
Daniel slowly swept the flashlight across the room.
The beam revealed old stone walls.
Broken wine barrels.
Collapsed shelves.
Then...
An iron door.
Half buried beneath rubble.
Its surface was covered in rust.
Yet one detail stood out.
Engraved into the center...
Was the same silver raven they had seen on the playing card.
Daniel approached cautiously.
"How old is this?"
Victoria whispered,
"I've seen that symbol before."
"Where?"
"My father had a ring."
Daniel examined the door.
A keyhole.
Large.
Old-fashioned.
Then he remembered.
"The brass key."
Victoria looked at him.
"The one from your father's motel room."
Above ground...
Detective Collins' phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"What is it?"
The officer on the other end sounded breathless.
"Sir..."
"We've identified the masked man."
Collins' eyes widened.
"You have a name?"
"...Yes."
He listened.
Then his expression changed from relief...
...to disbelief.
"That's impossible."
Inside the chamber...
Daniel brushed away decades of dust from the iron door.
Beneath the raven symbol...
Another engraving slowly appeared.
This one wasn't a picture.
It was a sentence.
Victoria read it aloud.
"Only the heir may enter."
She frowned.
"Heir?"
Daniel looked at her.
"What if it means Robert Hayes's heir?"
Victoria shook her head.
"My father never inherited anything."
Then...
A memory surfaced.
Not clear.
Just fragments.
A little girl.
A large house.
A man kneeling before her father.
Someone saying...
"One day... it will all belong to her."
Victoria gasped.
Daniel noticed.
"What?"
"I..."
She pressed both hands against her temples.
"I remember..."
"What?"
"My father lied to me."
Daniel stared.
"About what?"
She looked at the raven engraved on the iron door.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"He wasn't running from them..."
"He was hiding me from them."
Before Daniel could ask another question...
A mechanical click echoed through the chamber.
Neither of them had touched the door.
Slowly...
On its own...
The ancient iron door began to open inward.
From the darkness beyond came the unmistakable sound of footsteps.
Not one pair.
Several.
Then a familiar male voice drifted out of the shadows.
Calm.
Controlled.
Amused.
May you like
"Welcome home... Victoria."
