Chapter 4: The Name She Buried

Daniel stared at the passport as if the ink itself might rearrange into something less terrifying.

Name: Victoria Hayes.

Date of Birth: August 14.

Nationality: United States.

The woman in the photograph was unmistakably Vanessa.

The same green eyes.

The same elegant smile.

Only the name was different.

His fingers tightened around the folder.

He looked up slowly.

"...Tell me this is a mistake."

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"It is."

The answer came too quickly.

The detective standing beside Eleanor didn't react. He simply opened another folder and removed three more government-issued identification cards.

Each carried Vanessa's face.

Each bore a different name.

Victoria Hayes.

Natalie Brooks.

Emily Ross.

Daniel felt the room spinning.

"Three identities?"

The detective nodded.

"That is what we've confirmed so far."

Vanessa took a shaky step forward.

"People steal identities all the time. Someone could have used my picture."

The detective calmly slid another document across the table.

"This driver's license renewal includes biometric verification."

He tapped the page.

"Fingerprint match."

Then another.

"This passport application contains a live facial scan."

Another.

"And this one includes your signature."

Vanessa looked down.

She recognized every document.

She also knew they were impossible to explain away.

Daniel's voice had become almost unrecognizable.

"Why?"

Vanessa reached for him instinctively.

"I can explain everything."

He stepped back.

"No."

"I've heard that sentence three times today."

"I don't want promises."

"I want the truth."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"This isn't who I am."

Eleanor spoke quietly.

"Then tell him who you are."

Silence.

The detective cleared his throat.

"Mr. Hawthorne, our investigation began four years ago."

"It wasn't because of violence."

"It wasn't because of fraud."

"It began because several wealthy men reported almost identical experiences."

Daniel frowned.

"What experiences?"

"They entered serious relationships with the same woman."

"They became financially entangled."

"Within months, significant sums of money disappeared."

"The relationships ended."

"The woman vanished."

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head furiously.

"They're making me sound like a criminal."

The detective answered evenly.

"We're describing a pattern."

Claire remained seated, gently holding Sophie's hand.

She had expected this day for years.

Yet watching Daniel's world collapse was far more painful than satisfying.

She whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Daniel looked at her.

"For what?"

"I know what it feels like to realize the person you loved never really existed."

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It was small at first.

Then louder.

The sound startled everyone.

She wiped away her tears.

"So this is the plan?"

"You all gather together."

"You invent stories."

"And suddenly I'm the villain?"

She looked directly at Eleanor.

"You never liked me."

Eleanor didn't deny it.

"I didn't know you well enough to dislike you."

"I simply wanted to observe you."

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

"And now?"

"I know you."

The words landed harder than a slap.

The detective removed a thin black notebook from the evidence box.

"This was recovered from the storage unit."

He handed it to Daniel.

"What is it?"

"We believe it's a personal ledger."

Daniel opened it.

Every page contained names.

Dates.

Amounts of money.

Expensive gifts.

Properties.

Luxury watches.

Bank account numbers.

Some entries were crossed out.

Others circled in red.

Beside one name someone had written:

Not worth pursuing.

Another:

Family too cautious.

Another:

Excellent investment.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

Near the final pages...

He found his own name.

Daniel Hawthorne.

Beside it were several handwritten notes.

Only child.

Mother controls family trust.

Emotionally loyal.

Generous.

Possible marriage within eighteen months.

At the bottom...

One sentence written in neat blue ink.

Highest-value opportunity so far.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa stared at the notebook in horror.

"I've never seen that before."

The detective watched her carefully.

"You've said that several times today."

Daniel closed the notebook.

Very gently.

Almost carefully.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

"When did you write this?"

"I didn't."

"When?"

"I didn't!"

He nodded once.

His expression became strangely calm.

That frightened Vanessa more than his anger ever could.

Eleanor recognized the look immediately.

Daniel wasn't reacting emotionally anymore.

He was thinking.

That was far more dangerous.

Daniel walked toward the enormous living room window.

Outside, rain had begun falling over the gardens.

He remembered the first night he met Vanessa.

She had "accidentally" spilled wine on herself during a charity auction.

He had offered his jacket.

She laughed.

She thanked him.

She said she admired men who respected women.

Now...

Every memory felt staged.

Every coincidence felt rehearsed.

Every smile suddenly looked like strategy.

Behind him, the detective continued.

"There is one more thing."

Vanessa whispered,

"No..."

He ignored her.

"We traced several payments made under the name Victoria Hayes."

"They all led to one private investigator."

Daniel turned around.

"A private investigator?"

"Yes."

"He was hired repeatedly."

"For what?"

The detective opened another file.

"Background checks."

"On wealthy families."

The room fell silent.

Daniel's voice became cold.

"My family?"

The detective nodded.

"The Hawthornes."

"The Sinclairs."

"The Prestons."

"The Ashfords."

Claire frowned.

"She researched families before meeting them?"

The detective answered,

"Months before."

Vanessa's breathing became ragged.

Everything was unraveling.

Years of careful planning.

Years of perfect performances.

All collapsing in one afternoon.

The detective reached into the evidence box one final time.

"This is the most interesting item."

It was a slim silver USB drive.

Different from Eleanor's hidden camera.

Daniel frowned.

"What is on it?"

"We haven't opened it."

"Why not?"

"It was encrypted."

The detective looked toward Vanessa.

"But yesterday..."

"Our cybercrime unit finally unlocked it."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

She knew exactly what it contained.

Eleanor didn't ask the detective to play the files.

Instead, she looked at Daniel.

"This choice belongs to you."

He stared at the USB drive.

His hands were trembling.

"Will it answer everything?"

The detective hesitated.

"It will answer enough."

Daniel picked up the drive.

He walked toward the large television mounted above the fireplace.

The attorney inserted it into the media system.

A list of video files appeared.

There were dozens.

Each titled with a man's name.

Michael.

Richard.

Ethan.

Charles.

Daniel.

Daniel frowned.

"My name?"

The detective nodded.

"It appears she kept recordings."

Vanessa suddenly screamed.

"TURN IT OFF!"

Everyone flinched.

She rushed toward the television.

Two security guards, summoned earlier by Eleanor, stepped in front of her.

"Please, Miss Carter."

She struggled wildly.

"You don't understand!"

"Don't play it!"

Daniel looked at her.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"Why?"

Tears streamed down her face.

"For once..."

"...because I'm begging you."

Daniel selected the folder labeled Daniel.

Inside was only one video.

Recorded six months earlier.

The screen flickered to life.

Vanessa appeared.

She was sitting in an elegant hotel suite.

A glass of champagne rested beside her.

She didn't know she was being watched.

She smiled into her phone and said:

"He'll propose soon."

A man's voice, distorted over speakerphone, laughed.

"Are you sure?"

Vanessa smiled confidently.

"I know exactly what men like him want to hear."

The room froze.

She continued.

"Once we're married..."

"...half the game is already won."

Daniel's hand tightened into a fist.

On the screen, Vanessa laughed again.

Then she said the sentence that shattered the last piece of his trust.

"I don't love Daniel."

May you like

"I love what his last name is worth."
