Chapter 14: The Hand That Chose

Victoria's fingers screamed with pain.
Julian's grip around her wrist tightened as loose stones tumbled into the darkness below.
Daniel lay stretched across the fractured ledge, one arm wrapped tightly around Sophie, the other reaching desperately for Victoria.
"Hold on!" he shouted.
Victoria tried.
But Julian's full weight was pulling her toward the abyss.
Below them...
There was no visible bottom.
Only darkness.
Detective Collins rushed forward.
"Nobody move!"
The ancient stone groaned beneath their combined weight.
One wrong step...
The entire ledge might collapse.
Arthur, still bleeding from his shoulder, struggled to his feet.
"Evelyn!"
He looked toward Victoria's mother, who remained trapped inside the explosive vest.
"Don't move!"
Julian looked up at Victoria.
Despite hanging over certain death...
He smiled.
"You deserve the truth."
Victoria's voice trembled.
"What truth?"
He laughed softly.
"Arthur lied."
Arthur's face hardened.
"No."
Julian ignored him.
"You've spent your whole life searching for your family."
"But you've been searching in the wrong direction."
Daniel tightened his grip on Victoria's hand.
"This isn't the time."
Julian looked directly into Daniel's eyes.
"It is exactly the time."
Victoria felt her strength fading.
"Say it..."
Julian nodded.
"You think Robert Hayes kidnapped you."
"That's true."
"You think Arthur spent twenty-four years searching for you."
"Also true."
He paused.
"But you still believe Arthur's brother planned everything."
Arthur shouted,
"Enough!"
Julian smiled wider.
"No, Uncle."
"It's time."
Detective Collins noticed something.
Julian wasn't trying to escape anymore.
He wanted them to listen.
Why?
Julian spoke calmly.
"My father never ordered the kidnapping."
Silence.
Arthur froze.
"What?"
Julian nodded.
"Robert Hayes came to Edward."
"He already had Victoria."
"He already had a ransom plan."
"My father only financed Robert after the crime had begun."
Arthur stared in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
Julian shrugged.
"Believe whatever helps you sleep."
Victoria whispered,
"Then..."
"Who planned it?"
Julian looked at Arthur.
"Ask him."
Every eye turned toward Arthur.
His breathing became uneven.
He looked older than ever.
Much older.
Daniel noticed something strange.
Arthur wasn't angry.
He looked...
Afraid.
Victoria's voice cracked.
"Uncle..."
Arthur slowly closed his eyes.
"No..."
Julian laughed.
"Tell her."
Arthur remained silent.
"Tell her who left the security schedule on Robert's desk."
Silence.
"Tell her who canceled the bodyguards."
Arthur whispered,
"Stop."
Julian's smile vanished.
"No."
"You've hidden long enough."
Victoria stared at Arthur.
Her heart pounded.
"What is he talking about?"
Arthur's shoulders slumped.
Twenty-four years of dignity seemed to disappear in a single moment.
"It..."
His voice barely emerged.
"It was my fault."
The tunnel fell completely silent.
Even the distant sounds of collapsing stone seemed to stop.
Arthur continued.
"I never wanted Robert to take you."
Victoria couldn't breathe.
"What?"
"I only wanted to frighten my brother."
"I thought..."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I thought if security looked weak..."
Edward would finally agree to increase protection."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Arthur nodded slowly.
"I left copies of the patrol schedule on my desk."
"I forgot to lock the office."
"Robert stole them."
"He saw an opportunity."
Arthur covered his face.
"The kidnapping was never planned."
"It happened because of my stupidity."
Victoria stared at him.
"You..."
Arthur nodded.
"I've lived with that guilt every day since."
"I searched for you..."
"Not because I was innocent."
"But because I couldn't forgive myself."
Julian laughed bitterly.
"There."
"The great Arthur Blackwood."
"The noble uncle."
"Just another man destroyed by his own mistakes."
Daniel watched Victoria carefully.
She wasn't crying anymore.
She simply looked...
Empty.
The truth she had searched for all her life wasn't a grand conspiracy.
It was a chain of terrible decisions.
Greed.
Negligence.
Fear.
Each person had added another link.
Suddenly...
A shrill beep echoed through the tunnel.
Everyone turned.
The explosive vest around Evelyn's chest.
The blinking red light had changed.
From slow...
To rapid.
Detective Collins looked horrified.
"No..."
One of the bomb technicians who had just reached the tunnel entrance shouted,
"The timer activated!"
Julian smiled.
"I wondered when that would happen."
Claire hugged Sophie tightly.
"What timer?"
The technician swallowed.
"Someone armed it remotely."
"How long?"
He stared at the blinking display.
His face went white.
"Three minutes."
Panic erupted.
Officers shouted over one another.
"Get her out!"
"No!"
"Don't move the vest!"
Daniel looked between Victoria...
And Evelyn.
He couldn't save both.
Not alone.
Victoria understood immediately.
She looked at Daniel.
"Save my mother."
"What?"
"I'm slipping."
"I won't let go."
She forced a sad smile.
"You already gave me something no one else ever did."
Daniel's eyes burned.
"I'm not choosing."
"You have to."
Julian laughed.
"That's the beauty of impossible choices."
Arthur suddenly pulled a small revolver from inside his coat.
Everyone turned.
"Arthur!"
Detective Collins shouted.
Arthur ignored him.
He looked at Julian.
Then at Victoria.
His voice was calm.
"I failed this family once."
"I won't fail again."
Julian's smile faded.
"What are you doing?"
Arthur raised the gun.
Not at Julian.
At the crumbling section of stone above him.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"No!"
Arthur whispered,
"Forgive me."
He pulled the trigger.
BANG!
The bullet shattered a supporting pillar.
The ceiling roared.
Massive slabs of stone broke free.
Julian looked up in horror.
The ledge beneath him collapsed completely.
His hand slipped from Victoria's wrist.
"No!"
He fell backward into the darkness as thousands of pounds of rock crashed down after him.
The tunnel shook violently.
Daniel grabbed Victoria just as the remaining edge crumbled.
Detective Collins and two officers pulled all three of them to safety.
When the dust finally settled...
Julian was gone.
Buried beneath the collapse.
Or so everyone believed.
But before anyone could catch their breath...
The bomb technician screamed.
"The timer didn't stop!"
Everyone turned toward Evelyn.
The countdown continued.
00:01:42
Arthur stared in disbelief.
Then his eyes drifted to the explosive vest.
Finally...
To the tiny silver key still clutched tightly in Sophie's hand.
He whispered one sentence that chilled everyone more than the bomb itself.
"The key..."
May you like
"...isn't for the vault."
