Chapter 2: The Envelope of Lies

Vanessa's heartbeat thundered inside her chest.
The thick brown envelope in Eleanor Hawthorne's hands looked ordinary.
Plain.
Unmarked.
Yet somehow, it frightened her more than the hidden camera ever could.
Daniel noticed the color draining from Vanessa's face.
His voice was quiet.
"What evidence?"
Eleanor didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she walked into the grand living room.
"Everyone except the household staff may leave."
No one moved.
The servants exchanged uncertain glances.
One of the older butlers bowed.
"Mrs. Hawthorne... should we prepare tea?"
Eleanor smiled gently.
"Yes."
"And please invite everyone who worked in this house over the past month."
Vanessa's stomach tightened.
Everyone?
Why everyone?
Daniel followed his mother into the living room while Vanessa forced herself to keep smiling.
She could still fix this.
She always could.
She had talked her way out of worse situations.
As long as Daniel believed her...
Nothing else mattered.
Five minutes later.
The entire household stood quietly along one side of the room.
Gardeners.
Drivers.
Cooks.
Housekeepers.
Even the young maid Vanessa had once forced to kneel on broken glass because she accidentally served cold coffee.
The girl's hands still carried faint scars.
Daniel frowned.
"Why are all of them here?"
Eleanor looked at the servants.
"Because truth deserves witnesses."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"This feels a little dramatic, don't you think?"
Nobody laughed.
Eleanor placed the envelope on the coffee table.
"I've spent thirty-five years building the Hawthorne Group."
"I've hired more than twenty thousand employees."
"I've learned one lesson."
She looked around the room.
"The way someone treats people beneath them tells you exactly how they'll treat everyone once they gain power."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
His mother had told him that sentence when he was twelve.
He remembered it perfectly.
Back then, he thought it was simply advice.
Now...
It sounded like a verdict.
Eleanor finally opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
She handed the first one to Daniel.
His expression hardened.
It showed Vanessa.
Not recently.
Several years younger.
Standing outside an expensive jewelry boutique.
Another woman stood beside her.
The sales associate looked terrified.
Daniel frowned.
"When was this?"
Eleanor answered calmly.
"Four years ago."
Vanessa immediately spoke.
"I don't even remember that."
"No?"
Eleanor slid another photograph across the table.
This one showed the same sales associate crying while picking broken jewelry off the floor.
A timestamp glowed in the corner.
Daniel looked closer.
"Is that security footage?"
"Yes."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"So?"
"A customer argued with an employee."
"That happens every day."
Eleanor nodded.
"It does."
"Would you like to know why?"
Daniel looked at the back of the photograph.
Printed beneath it were only six words.
Employee hospitalized after violent assault.
His eyes widened.
He slowly looked up.
"Vanessa..."
She laughed.
"Hospitalized?"
"That's ridiculous."
"I barely touched her."
The room became silent.
Vanessa froze.
Barely...
Touched...
Her own words echoed in the room.
She hadn't denied it.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"You said you barely touched her."
Vanessa quickly corrected herself.
"I mean..."
"I heard that..."
She stopped.
Too late.
Eleanor quietly removed another file.
"This one is from two years later."
Inside were complaints from restaurant staff.
Three different luxury hotels.
A private airline.
Each report carried the same description.
Female guest verbally abused employees.
Attempted to force staff to kneel.
Threatened termination despite having no authority.
Daniel looked increasingly confused.
"Why wasn't she banned?"
Eleanor smiled sadly.
"Money."
"Managers often apologize to wealthy customers."
"They rarely defend employees."
One elderly housekeeper lowered her head.
Several servants wiped away tears.
They knew exactly what Eleanor meant.
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"This is insane."
"You're collecting old stories to embarrass me."
"No."
Eleanor replied.
"I'm establishing a pattern."
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
"Did these things happen?"
She hesitated.
"They're exaggerating."
"So..."
"They happened."
Vanessa clenched her fists.
"Daniel!"
"You know me."
He remained silent.
Did he?
For the first time since meeting her...
He wasn't sure.
Eleanor opened another folder.
"This one interests me the most."
Vanessa's breathing became shallow.
Not that file.
Please...
Not that one.
Daniel noticed.
"You've seen it before."
"No."
Vanessa answered far too quickly.
"I haven't."
Eleanor slowly slid several bank statements across the table.
Daniel frowned.
"What am I looking at?"
"Transfers."
"Large ones."
"From three different men."
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"They were gifts."
"Were they?"
Eleanor pushed forward printed messages.
Daniel picked them up.
His hands began shaking.
The first conversation read:
I miss you already.
Thank you for helping with my rent.
Love you.
Signed...
Vanessa.
The date...
Three months after she had started dating Daniel.
He looked at her.
"What is this?"
Vanessa immediately answered.
"It's fake."
Eleanor nodded.
"Excellent."
"I thought you'd say that."
She looked toward the family attorney.
"Mr. Brooks."
The attorney placed a certified forensic report on the table.
"Phone extraction verified."
"No alterations."
"No editing."
Daniel stared at the report.
His heartbeat became painfully slow.
He could almost hear every second.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Vanessa reached for his hand.
He pulled it away.
Her heart sank.
"This proves nothing!"
she shouted.
"I never cheated!"
Eleanor remained calm.
"I didn't say you did."
Vanessa blinked.
Then realized her mistake.
Again.
No one had accused her of cheating.
Yet she defended herself against exactly that accusation.
Daniel looked at her.
His eyes no longer carried trust.
Only questions.
"So..."
"There was someone else?"
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
A soft knock interrupted the silence.
The butler entered.
"Mrs. Hawthorne..."
"There is someone outside."
Eleanor nodded.
"Please bring her in."
Vanessa frowned.
"Who?"
No one answered.
A young woman stepped into the room carrying a little girl no older than five.
The child hid behind her mother's leg.
The woman looked exhausted.
Nervous.
Yet determined.
Daniel had never seen her before.
Vanessa had.
The moment their eyes met...
Vanessa nearly collapsed.
"No..."
The woman looked directly at Eleanor.
"You said today was finally the day."
Eleanor nodded.
"It is."
The young woman reached into her handbag.
She removed a small velvet box.
Inside was an engagement ring.
Daniel frowned.
"What is this?"
The woman swallowed.
Her voice shook.
"It belongs to me."
She looked directly at Vanessa.
"She stole my fiancé."
The room froze.
Vanessa whispered,
"You're lying."
The woman slowly raised another item.
A framed photograph.
Daniel walked closer.
His face lost every trace of color.
In the picture...
Vanessa stood smiling beside another man.
On her left hand...
Was the exact same engagement ring.
The date beneath the photo was unmistakable.
Only two weeks before Vanessa had first met Daniel.
The little girl tugged gently on her mother's sleeve.
"Mama..."
"Is that the bad lady?"
The woman nodded silently.
Tears rolled down her face.
Then she looked at Daniel and spoke the words that shattered the room.
"She didn't choose you because she loved you."
May you like
"She chose you because your family was richer."
