Chapter 3: The Woman Who Came Back

The room became so quiet that even the ticking grandfather clock seemed deafening.
Daniel stared at the framed photograph in the young woman's trembling hands.
Vanessa.
A different hairstyle.
A different dress.
The same dazzling smile.
On her finger rested the engagement ring now lying inside the velvet box.
The date printed beneath the picture was impossible to ignore.
Exactly fourteen days before Vanessa had met him at a charity gala.
He looked up slowly.
"...Who are you?"
The young woman took a deep breath.
"My name is Claire Morgan."
Her voice was steady despite the tears threatening to spill.
"I didn't come here to ruin anyone's life."
She glanced at Eleanor.
"I came because Mrs. Hawthorne promised me the truth would finally matter."
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"This is ridiculous."
"I've never seen this woman before."
Claire's expression did not change.
"I expected you to say that."
She reached into her handbag again.
This time, she placed a stack of photographs on the coffee table.
Daniel picked up the first one.
Vanessa and Claire were sitting together in a café.
Both smiling.
The timestamp showed they had spent nearly two hours there.
The second photograph showed them shopping together.
The third...
Vanessa was trying on bridesmaid dresses while Claire applauded.
Daniel frowned.
"You said you never met her."
Vanessa's lips parted, but no words came.
Claire smiled sadly.
"You were supposed to be my maid of honor."
Daniel felt his pulse pounding in his ears.
He turned another photograph over.
Vanessa stood arm in arm with a handsome man wearing a navy-blue suit.
He looked genuinely happy.
His arm wrapped protectively around her waist.
"Who is he?"
Claire answered quietly.
"My fiancé."
His name was Ethan Brooks.
Daniel studied the man's face.
There was nothing remarkable about him except the joy in his expression.
The joy of someone planning a future.
"What happened?"
Claire looked down.
"He disappeared."
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"See?"
"He left her."
"How is that my fault?"
Claire slowly shook her head.
"He disappeared..."
"...the same week he emptied every savings account he owned."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Claire continued.
"He withdrew nearly everything."
"Sold his car."
"Canceled our wedding venue."
"And vanished."
She looked directly into Daniel's eyes.
"I thought he'd betrayed me."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I spent almost a year believing I wasn't enough."
Eleanor folded her hands.
"But he didn't disappear willingly."
Daniel turned toward his mother.
"What do you mean?"
She nodded toward the attorney.
Mr. Brooks opened another folder.
Inside were financial records.
Phone logs.
Travel receipts.
Bank transfers.
One transfer stood out.
Three hundred thousand dollars.
The recipient...
Vanessa Carter.
Daniel's breathing stopped.
Vanessa slammed both hands onto the table.
"That money wasn't from Ethan!"
"No?"
Eleanor asked softly.
"Then why did you know his name?"
Silence.
Daniel slowly looked at Vanessa.
His eyes widened.
"My mother never said his name."
Neither had Claire.
No one had.
Yet Vanessa had just identified him.
Vanessa realized her mistake too late.
"I..."
She searched desperately for an explanation.
"I guessed."
Claire let out a hollow laugh.
"You always were terrible under pressure."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I need someone to explain everything."
Claire nodded.
"I will."
She sat carefully across from him.
"Five years ago..."
"Ethan proposed to me."
"We'd been together since college."
"We weren't rich."
"But we were happy."
Daniel listened without interrupting.
"One evening Ethan told me he'd met an incredible woman at a business networking event."
Claire's smile faded.
"He said she was charming."
"Confident."
"Ambitious."
"Her name was Vanessa."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
As if refusing to hear the past.
Claire continued.
"At first..."
"I wasn't worried."
"She became a friend."
"She came to our apartment."
"We had dinner together."
"She helped me choose wedding decorations."
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
"Is that true?"
She whispered,
"It isn't how she's making it sound."
Claire nodded.
"You're right."
"It was worse."
The little girl standing beside Claire tightened her grip on her mother's hand.
Daniel smiled gently at her.
"What's your name?"
"Sophie."
"How old are you?"
"I'm five."
Daniel smiled.
She reminded him of his younger cousin.
Innocent.
Completely unaware of the storm surrounding her.
Claire stroked Sophie's hair.
"I found out I was pregnant shortly before Ethan disappeared."
Daniel looked surprised.
"You were alone?"
Claire nodded.
"I lost the apartment."
"I sold my engagement ring."
"I worked two jobs."
"I never looked for revenge."
"I only wanted answers."
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"This has nothing to do with Daniel!"
Claire's eyes hardened.
"It has everything to do with him."
"You made him the next target."
Daniel frowned.
"Target?"
Claire reached into her handbag one final time.
She removed an old leather notebook.
Its pages were worn.
Corners bent.
She handed it to Daniel.
"What is this?"
"Ethan's journal."
Vanessa lunged forward.
"Don't!"
Daniel instinctively stepped back.
The desperation in Vanessa's voice shocked him.
Eleanor noticed.
"So."
"You've seen it."
Daniel opened the notebook.
The first pages contained ordinary entries.
Work.
Wedding plans.
Shopping lists.
Then...
Halfway through...
The handwriting changed.
It became hurried.
Uneven.
Almost panicked.
Daniel read aloud.
"Vanessa keeps asking strange questions."
"She wants to know exactly how much money I have."
"She keeps asking whether my uncle plans to change his will."
Daniel stopped.
He swallowed.
The next page...
"Today she kissed me."
Claire closed her eyes.
"I found that page after he disappeared."
Daniel looked up.
"You knew?"
"I wanted to believe it wasn't true."
Vanessa shook her head violently.
"He forced himself on me!"
Claire stared at her in disbelief.
"You told me you loved him."
"I lied!"
Vanessa screamed.
"I said whatever I had to!"
The room froze.
Daniel looked at her.
"You..."
"...said whatever you had to?"
She covered her mouth.
Another mistake.
Another confession hidden inside an excuse.
Daniel lowered the notebook.
For the first time since they met...
He saw someone standing in front of him whom he did not recognize.
The sweet woman who volunteered at animal shelters.
The elegant fiancée who cried whenever she saw sad movies.
The woman who insisted every waiter deserved a generous tip whenever Daniel was watching.
Had any of it been real?
Or had he simply fallen in love with the role she performed?
Eleanor spoke quietly.
"I investigated Ethan's disappearance for two years."
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because something didn't make sense."
Claire added,
"She was the only person who believed me."
Daniel stared at his mother.
"You never told me."
"You weren't involved."
"Until now."
The attorney checked his watch.
"Mrs. Hawthorne."
"The detective has arrived."
Vanessa's face instantly lost all color.
Detective?
She whispered,
"No..."
Eleanor nodded toward the entrance.
"Please send him in."
A tall man wearing a dark gray suit entered carrying two sealed evidence boxes.
He placed them carefully on the table.
"My apologies for the delay."
Daniel frowned.
"What are those?"
The detective looked directly at Vanessa.
"They were recovered from a storage unit rented under a false name."
Vanessa's knees nearly buckled.
Impossible.
She had emptied that unit herself.
Hadn't she?
The detective opened the first box.
Inside lay dozens of photographs.
Passports.
Burner phones.
Multiple fake driver's licenses bearing Vanessa's picture under different names.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"What..."
"...is all this?"
The detective reached into the second box.
This time, he removed a thick manila folder stamped with a single word in bold red letters:
CONFIDENTIAL
He laid it in front of Daniel.
"I believe," he said gravely, "your fiancée has been living under more than one identity."
Daniel slowly opened the file.
The first page contained a passport photo of Vanessa.
But the name beneath it was not Vanessa Carter.
It read:
Victoria Hayes.
And under that name was a chilling note.
