Chapter 7: The Message Written in Blood

For several long seconds, no one breathed.

"The daughter talks... the family dies next."

The detective's words echoed through the Hawthorne mansion like the tolling of a funeral bell.

Victoria's face drained of all color.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't denying anything.

She looked... terrified.

Not of prison.

Not of losing Daniel.

But of something else.

Something far older.

Far more dangerous.

Daniel broke the silence.

"How did he die?"

The detective hesitated.

"He was shot once."

"In the chest."

"Professional."

"No signs of a struggle."

"No fingerprints."

"No shell casing."

Mr. Brooks frowned.

"A hired killer."

The detective nodded.

"That's our initial assessment."

Claire instinctively pulled Sophie closer.

The little girl sensed the fear in the room.

"Mama..."

"Can we go home?"

Claire kissed her forehead.

"Soon, sweetheart."

But she wasn't sure that was true anymore.

Victoria whispered,

"...He's dead."

The detective looked at her carefully.

"You don't sound surprised."

She slowly shook her head.

"No."

"I always knew this day would come."

Daniel stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria looked at him with hollow eyes.

"My father cheated dangerous people."

"He stole from people who didn't call the police."

"He stole from people who made problems disappear."

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Who?"

Victoria answered with one word.

"I don't know."

The detective opened another evidence folder.

"We searched the farmhouse."

"We recovered several ledgers."

"Burner phones."

"Cash."

"And one laptop."

Daniel asked,

"Did you find anything useful?"

The detective nodded.

"Enough to understand Robert Hayes wasn't working alone."

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

"So there were partners."

"Not exactly."

The detective slid a photograph across the table.

It showed the inside of the abandoned farmhouse.

Dust covered everything.

Except one section of the wall.

There, dozens of photographs had been pinned in perfect rows.

Every photograph showed a wealthy individual.

Business owners.

Judges.

Doctors.

Politicians.

Some faces were crossed out with black marker.

Others circled in red.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Near the center...

He saw his own photograph.

Beside it...

A picture of Eleanor.

And beneath both photographs...

One handwritten note.

Hawthorne Family. Phase Three.

Daniel looked up slowly.

"What does 'Phase Three' mean?"

The detective answered honestly.

"We don't know."

Victoria did.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No..."

Daniel noticed.

"You've heard that before."

She looked away.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"Victoria."

Her shoulders trembled.

"I said no."

Eleanor spoke gently.

"If you know something..."

"This is the time."

Victoria closed her eyes.

For nearly a minute...

She said nothing.

Then she whispered,

"There were always phases."

Everyone looked at her.

"My father had rules."

"First..."

"Find the family."

"Second..."

"Learn everything."

"Third..."

"Become indispensable."

She looked directly at Daniel.

"That's Phase Three."

Daniel felt a chill run through him.

"You mean..."

Victoria nodded.

"The engagement."

Claire gasped softly.

"So he planned everything."

Victoria shook her head.

"Not everything."

"He wanted money."

"I..."

She stopped.

"You wanted more."

Daniel finished quietly.

Victoria lowered her head.

"...Yes."

The admission hurt him more than he expected.

The detective continued.

"One page of Robert Hayes's ledger contains another interesting note."

He placed a photocopy on the table.

It read:

Phase Four: Transfer Assets.

Phase Five: Exit.

Then, at the bottom, written in darker ink:

Never reach Phase Six.

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

The detective answered,

"There is no explanation."

Victoria stared at the paper.

Her lips parted.

"Oh God..."

Eleanor noticed immediately.

"You know."

Victoria nodded once.

Barely.

"Phase Six..."

She whispered.

"...means someone failed."

The detective frowned.

"And?"

Victoria looked physically ill.

"My father said..."

"If we ever reached Phase Six..."

"...everyone became disposable."

The room fell silent.

Claire looked at Sophie.

Without a word, she picked up her daughter and carried her into the next room with one of the housekeepers.

The child didn't need to hear any more.

Daniel watched Claire leave.

Then turned back to Victoria.

"How many families?"

Victoria answered without hesitation.

"I don't know."

"You kept records."

"My father never let me see everything."

"Estimate."

She swallowed.

"...More than twenty."

The detective's jaw tightened.

Eleanor asked quietly,

"How many were destroyed?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

"But..."

"My father celebrated after every success."

Daniel walked toward the fireplace.

His reflection stared back at him from the dark television screen.

He barely recognized himself.

Everything he thought he knew about love had become part of a criminal blueprint.

Suddenly...

The mansion's security alarm blared.

A piercing electronic siren echoed through every hallway.

The servants jumped.

Mr. Brooks spun toward the front entrance.

"What happened?"

One of the security guards pressed his earpiece.

"Someone breached the front gate!"

Daniel immediately stepped toward Eleanor.

"Stay behind me."

She smiled faintly.

"I've protected this family for forty years."

"I can still stand."

The guard's voice crackled again.

"Black SUV."

"No license plates."

"Driver isn't stopping."

The detective drew his service weapon.

"Everyone move away from the windows."

The household scattered.

Victoria remained frozen.

She whispered,

"...They're here."

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"Who?"

She looked directly into his eyes.

"My father's employers."

A deafening crash exploded outside.

The security gate twisted inward.

Metal screamed against concrete.

Another guard shouted through the radio.

"They're inside the grounds!"

The detective barked orders.

"Lock every entrance!"

"Call tactical support!"

Daniel turned back to Victoria.

"You said you didn't know them."

"I don't."

"But I know how they work."

Her breathing became rapid.

"They erase evidence."

"They erase witnesses."

"They erase families."

Then...

A single gunshot rang out from somewhere outside.

One of the servants screamed.

Another shot.

Glass shattered on the west side of the mansion.

The lights flickered.

Darkness swallowed the room for one terrifying second.

Emergency generators roared to life.

Red security lights illuminated the mansion like an emergency bunker.

Everyone stood frozen.

Then the head of security burst through the living room doors.

Blood stained his sleeve.

His face was pale.

"Mr. Hawthorne..."

He struggled to catch his breath.

"They didn't come to steal anything."

Daniel stared at him.

"What do they want?"

The guard looked directly at Victoria.

"They're demanding..."

"...that we hand over the girl."

The room fell silent.

Victoria whispered,

"They mean me."

But before anyone could respond...

The mansion's intercom suddenly activated by itself.

Static crackled through every speaker.

Then a calm male voice filled the estate.

A voice Victoria recognized instantly.

A voice she had hoped never to hear again.

"Victoria..."

"Your father broke the rules."

May you like

"Now it's your turn to pay."
