CHAPTER 7 THE HELICOPTER THAT NEVER LEFT

Marcus ran across the rain-soaked helipad with every ounce of strength he had.
"NO!"
The helicopter climbed through the darkness.
Its rotors blasted freezing rain into his face.
His daughter...
Only hours old...
Was disappearing into the night.
Marcus reached for the emergency flare box mounted beside the landing pad.
Without hesitation, he smashed the glass.
Richard burst onto the roof just as Marcus pulled the launcher free.
"What are you doing?"
Marcus didn't answer.
He aimed the flare gun toward the helicopter.
Not at the cockpit.
At the tail rotor.
He squeezed the trigger.
WHOOSH!
A brilliant red flare streaked upward.
It missed by less than a meter.
The pilot immediately banked hard to avoid it.
Then something unexpected happened.
The helicopter didn't fly away.
Instead...
It circled once above the hospital.
Twice.
Almost as if it were waiting for something.
Richard stared upward.
"That's strange..."
Marcus followed the aircraft with his eyes.
"It isn't escaping."
"No."
Richard slowly lowered his binoculars.
"It's buying time."
Time for what?
Before either man could answer...
The rooftop lights suddenly went out.
Emergency backup activated two seconds later.
When the lights returned...
The helicopter was gone.
Completely gone.
Marcus looked across the skyline.
Nothing.
No flashing navigation lights.
No engine noise.
Only rain.
Richard's expression hardened.
"It never crossed the city radar."
Marcus turned sharply.
"What?"
"I already contacted air traffic control."
"They never detected a departing aircraft."
Marcus looked back at the empty sky.
"Then where did it go?"
Five minutes later...
Hospital security searched every rooftop access point.
Nothing.
No footprints beyond the rain-soaked landing area.
No discarded equipment.
No blood.
No fibers.
Then one officer shouted.
"Sir!"
Marcus hurried over.
Near the center of the helipad lay a small object.
Wrapped carefully in a white hospital blanket.
Marcus's heart nearly stopped.
The blanket.
It belonged to his daughter.
He tore it open.
Inside...
Not a baby.
A life-sized medical training doll.
The same weight.
The same size.
The same hospital identification bracelet.
Richard picked up the bracelet.
"It's fake."
Marcus stared at him.
"What do you mean fake?"
"The barcode doesn't exist."
Silence.
The helicopter hadn't taken his daughter.
It had taken...
A decoy.
Marcus's breathing slowed.
"If that's not my baby..."
He looked around wildly.
"Then where is she?"
Down on the seventh floor...
Dr. Emily Carter reviewed the NICU records.
Something wasn't adding up.
The electronic chart listed one newborn in Room Seven.
Female.
Healthy.
Mother: Khloe Thorne.
Time of birth: 11:42 p.m.
Perfectly normal.
Except...
There had actually been two bracelet numbers generated that night.
Not one.
She frowned.
"Why would the system create two IDs?"
The technician checked again.
"It shouldn't."
"Unless..."
He stopped.
"Unless what?"
"The baby was registered twice."
Richard immediately ordered a full audit of every newborn admitted within the last twenty-four hours.
Eight babies.
Seven families.
One record...
Had vanished.
No parents.
No medical history.
No discharge papers.
Just a bracelet number.
Then nothing.
Richard whispered,
"Someone inserted a ghost patient."
Meanwhile...
Three kilometers away...
An unmarked ambulance rolled silently through deserted streets.
No flashing lights.
No siren.
Inside sat Lisa Morgan.
Across from her...
The mysterious man from the rooftop.
Cradled safely in his arms...
A sleeping newborn girl.
The real daughter of Marcus and Khloe.
Lisa looked at the child.
"You lied."
The man didn't respond.
"You told Isabella the baby wasn't important."
Still silence.
Lisa's voice hardened.
"You lied to all of us."
The man finally looked up.
"No."
"I lied to Isabella."
He gently adjusted the infant's blanket.
"Because she never needed to know the truth."
Lisa frowned.
"What truth?"
The man stared at the baby's tiny hand.
Then quietly answered,
"She isn't just Marcus's daughter."
"She's the last surviving key."
Lisa blinked.
"Key to what?"
The man smiled sadly.
"Genesis."
Back at the hospital...
Khloe awoke to chaos.
Doctors rushed in and out.
Security filled the hallway.
She immediately sensed something was wrong.
"Where's my baby?"
No one answered.
She repeated louder,
"Where is my daughter?"
Marcus entered slowly.
His face said everything before he spoke.
Khloe's eyes filled instantly.
"No..."
Marcus knelt beside her bed.
"We're going to find her."
Khloe grabbed his arm.
"So she's gone?"
Marcus couldn't lie.
"...Yes."
She closed her eyes.
A single tear rolled down her cheek.
Then...
She whispered something unexpected.
"They'll bring her back."
Marcus looked confused.
"What?"
Khloe opened her eyes.
"They have to."
"Why?"
Her lips trembled.
"Because..."
"...they kidnapped the wrong child."
Marcus froze.
The room fell silent.
Richard looked up sharply.
"What did you just say?"
Khloe realized what she'd revealed.
Too late.
She looked away.
Marcus gently took her hand.
"Khloe."
She said nothing.
"Look at me."
Slowly...
She did.
Marcus asked the question that sent a chill through everyone in the room.
"If they took the wrong child..."
"...then where is our real daughter?"
Khloe's face turned pale.
Because for the first time...
May you like
She genuinely didn't know.
