CHAPTER 15 THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED

For a long moment...

No one moved.

Marcus couldn't even blink.

The woman standing in front of him had the same gentle eyes.

The same silver necklace.

The same faint scar above her right eyebrow from a bicycle accident he remembered as a child.

Every detail matched.

It was her.

Margaret Thorne.

The woman he had buried.

The woman he had mourned for fifteen years.

She smiled sadly.

"You've grown into a good man."

Marcus's voice barely escaped his throat.

"No..."

"You died."

"I watched them lower your coffin into the ground."

Margaret nodded.

"You watched a funeral."

She shifted the sleeping baby gently in her arms.

"You never saw who was inside the coffin."

Silence rippled through the underground archive.

Richard slowly lowered his weapon.

"The death certificate..."

Margaret looked at him.

"Was real."

Richard frowned.

"But if you're alive..."

"The woman who died," Margaret said quietly, "was another Genesis witness placed under my identity."

Even Emily Carter looked stunned.

"You were never supposed to survive," she whispered.

Margaret smiled faintly.

"I had help."

The Phoenix commander stared at her with something close to respect.

"I thought you disappeared after the evacuation."

"I did."

"I just never stopped watching."

Marcus took another cautious step.

"My daughter..."

Margaret looked down at the sleeping infant.

"She's safe."

"Give her to me."

"I will."

"But first..."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"You need to understand why everyone has been chasing her."

Marcus clenched his fists.

"They said she was a key."

"They were wrong."

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret gently brushed the baby's tiny hand with her finger.

"She isn't the key."

"She's the proof."

Richard exchanged a glance with the Phoenix commander.

"Proof of what?"

Margaret walked toward the center of the archive.

Behind her stood a biometric terminal covered in dust.

She placed her hand on the scanner.

Nothing happened.

She looked at Marcus.

"Your hand."

Marcus hesitated.

"Do it."

Slowly, he placed his palm beside hers.

The terminal remained silent for two seconds.

Then...

A green light illuminated the chamber.

A mechanical voice echoed through the vault.

Dual genetic authorization confirmed.

Archive access complete.

A hidden compartment slid open beneath the terminal.

Inside rested a single black folder.

Not hundreds.

Not thousands.

Just one.

Stamped in faded silver letters:

PROJECT GENESIS: FINAL REPORT

Emily's breathing quickened.

"The report..."

The Phoenix commander whispered,

"It actually exists."

Margaret handed the folder to Marcus.

"You should read the last page first."

Marcus opened it.

His eyes scanned the final paragraph.

Then stopped.

His face drained of color.

Richard stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

Marcus couldn't answer.

He silently handed him the report.

Richard read aloud.

Project Genesis officially terminated.

No genetically enhanced subjects were ever successfully created.

All twelve children were ordinary human beings.

The room fell silent.

Emily frowned.

"That's impossible."

Margaret slowly shook her head.

"The experiment failed."

Marcus looked up.

"Then why?"

"Why erase memories?"

"Why replace children?"

"Why kill people?"

Margaret's expression became heavy.

"Because powerful people had already invested billions."

"They couldn't admit they had built an empire on failure."

"So..."

"They created a myth."

"The myth of the perfect child."

"The myth that one surviving subject carried something priceless."

Richard whispered,

"And everyone believed it."

Margaret nodded.

"For twenty-three years."

Emily lowered her pistol.

"So the baby..."

"...isn't special?"

Margaret smiled.

"Oh, she is."

"Just not for the reason you think."

She looked lovingly at the sleeping newborn.

"She's special because she's free."

"No experiments."

"No numbers."

"No files."

"Just a little girl."

Marcus felt tears sting his eyes.

For the first time since the attack...

He looked at his daughter...

Not as a mystery.

Not as a target.

Simply as his child.

Suddenly...

One Phoenix operative ran into the archive.

"Commander!"

"What?"

"The police have surrounded the hospital."

Emily looked toward the exit.

"So it's over."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"It's finally beginning."

He turned to Marcus.

"The truth is going to destroy governments."

Marcus slowly closed the Genesis report.

Then looked at Margaret.

"What happens now?"

She smiled.

"You decide."

"No one else."

Marcus looked around the archive.

The files.

The blood samples.

The records of stolen childhoods.

He made his decision.

"Burn it."

Everyone stared at him.

Emily frowned.

"All of it?"

Marcus nodded.

"No more Genesis."

"No more secrets."

"No more children growing up as numbers."

The Phoenix commander studied Marcus for several seconds.

Then, for the first time...

He smiled.

"I think Edward would be proud."

Minutes later...

The archive's emergency incineration system activated.

One by one...

Decades of classified files disappeared into flames.

The myths.

The lies.

The stolen identities.

Gone forever.

Marcus stood outside the vault with Khloe, who had finally reached the underground level despite her injuries.

Without a word...

Margaret gently placed the sleeping baby into Khloe's arms.

Khloe broke into tears.

Marcus wrapped one arm around his wife.

The three of them stood together in silence.

No cameras.

No billionaires.

No conspiracies.

Just a family.

Margaret watched from a distance.

She smiled softly.

Then turned and walked into the smoke-filled corridor.

Marcus called after her.

"Wait!"

She paused.

"Will I ever see you again?"

Margaret looked back one last time.

"When your daughter is old enough..."

"...tell her she never had a number."

"She only ever had a name."

She disappeared into the shadows before anyone could stop her.

Six months later...

The attack on Khloe Thorne dominated international headlines.

Dozens of corrupt officials resigned.

Private research organizations were dismantled.

Isabella Rossi pleaded guilty to the assault and received a lengthy prison sentence after the unedited security footage surfaced.

Richard Lawson became the head of an independent commission investigating the remaining Genesis records recovered before the archive was destroyed.

Marcus resigned as CEO of Thorne Industries, appointing a professional management team while he stepped away from public life.

He chose something wealth had never given him.

Time.

One quiet autumn afternoon, Marcus sat in the garden behind their home.

Khloe laughed as their daughter reached toward a butterfly drifting through the flowers.

Marcus picked up the old wooden horse that had survived everything.

He placed it gently beside his daughter.

Then smiled.

"No more Number Twelve."

Khloe leaned against his shoulder.

"What shall we call her?"

Marcus looked down at the little girl.

The answer came without hesitation.

"Hope."

Because after every lie...

Every betrayal...

Every stolen memory...

May you like

Hope was the only inheritance worth leaving behind.
